Some notes: Neon stripe, ekor merak and treubii milk (I know it as dark silver or silver shield or silver stripe) are gingers. My snake scale looks exactly like your picture... Scindapsus take a long time to establish a good root system, during that time they indeed grow foliage really slowly but once they are established they grow much faster. Silver lady is much more common than the others in rare, at least here in US. Dark argyreus is much darker than regular one but I heard it's just juvenile tricolor (same for dark satin you did not mention here, also heard it's a juvenile tricolor, but can't verify it yet, so far they grow consistent leaves for me). The real Scindapsus you did not mention: silver splash and silver knight (also called sparkling Borneo). I have them and they are legitimate cultivars, Silver Knight is the most silvery of all, it looks like it's covered in glitter :). Silver cloud is the best Scindapsus of all of the ones you have on this list, in my opinion, it grows big leaves like Exotica and the pattern on the leaves is just amazing! Also grows faster than other Scindapsus I have. In Indonesia Silver cloud is sold as Silver Splash, but it's different from the Silver Splash sold in US (as if the whole Scindapsus market wasn't complicated enough). Silver Princess is also amazing! The leaves are glossy and stiffer than Exotica, the contrast between dark and silver is also more pronounced, I've seen it sold as dark Exotica but the leaves are generally narrower. Tricolor is a tricky one, it's suede and the third color is not as pronounced as the pictures usually show, it's one of the more doctored picture-wise. It's also the most finnicky of all the Scindapsus I grow, it needs really high humidity. Thank you for this video! I'm so happy you're getting into Scindapsus, I've been collecting them for around a year now and I can't wait for more content about them :)

@horace many of those are either not scindapsus, have been manipulated to have temporary physical changes, have a virus such as a color break or a mosaic that was intentionally injected, or they're an already known species that has been manipulated into a state of Ontogeny with extremely high levels of certain nutrients
@meghanjohnson1175
@meghanjohnson1175 Год назад
It's not a mutant,, it's just a regular manjula. All Epipremnum Aureum cultivars have been tissue cultured without the use of both male and female reproduction cells due to the plants "shy flower" hindrance. In addition, they all have a minimum of 3 different types of cellular and phenotype manipulation. When you increase the number of times you manipulate cells, particularly those developed in such an untraditional way, you also increase the chances of the plant developing constant cellular instability. So these cultivars end up mutating or being incredibly sensitive to Ontogeny changes, over and over. That doesn't make it a different plants. Just like scindapsus. I wish everyone would stop trying to give every slightly different looking plant a new namr!

I was underwhelmed with the Jade Satin in photographs then completely mesmerized when I saw them in person. The leaves have a deep veining and the combo of green makes it look like a mermaid tail. They also have faint silver specs. I ended up buying 2 & 1of them puts out leaves that look just like the silver hero. Their texture almost looks like elephant skin. The photos don’t do it justice.

@annakilifa331

The Jade Satin can look very different, depending on circumstances. I've moved with mine and the different environment (light, humidity, whatever else) made the new growth look quite different. But also different from what it looked like when I bought it, which also looked different to how it grew in my first apartment. So the very same plant with the exact same genetics can look quite a bit different depending on circumstances to the point where I think saying it looks completely diffrent in real life compared to online doesn't make much sense when the real thing can already look so different from itself.

I'm so happy that I was able to cross the Scindapsus Treubii "Moonlight" off of my wishlist in 2021 because of Costa Farms! I remember a little over a year ago, a tiny cutting of even just a Moonlight was $60- $100. Then in May 2021 I got a healthy, FULL pot and I still love it just as much as I did then (probably even more!). I really hope that I'll be able to get a Dark Form in the near future

Anyone else just looking forward to all the different green screen backgrounds we get every video? Just me? A note about Exotica, my favorite thing about it is sometimes it throws out huge paddle leaves of FULL silver and they are just so stunning! My Silver Lady is very stunning. The leaf is smaller, sharper and pointy-teardrop and the colors are more striking/stunning. My Tricolor is absolutely stunning. Very dark leaf color and kind of a "pixelated" pattern of silver and light green. Most of the photos are edited to look better to be honest, but it's one of my favorites! I have a "nearly black" dark jade satin and I think it's way more stunning than a normal form when the light hits it just right.

So happy to see a Scindapsus Rare Plant Index! I went down the rare scindapsus rabbit hole a few months ago and have been collecting different varieties ever since. Some of the plants listed for sale as "scindapsus" are actually varieties of ginger. The "neon stripe" and ekor merak, for example, are definitely ginger. The "neon stripe" is also known as Boesenbergia aurantiaca. I've never seen a plant called a "treubii milk," but going off of the picture, that plant looks like something that I usually see listed as a "scindapsus dark silver". It is also a type of ginger (Scaphochlamys Scintillans) and not a scindapsus. I didn't see it mentioned here, but "Silver Splash" is another somewhat uncommon, but legitimate and very nice-looking scindapsus.
@meghanjohnson1175
@meghanjohnson1175 Год назад
Actually MANY, MANY listed as scindapsus are Actually Scaphochlamys and Homalomena. I'm a botanist so I would know! Many more are scindapsus, but they're simply a different form of a known species, like tattoo. That's a mechanical injury that prevents the leaves from developing highly functional leaf crystal macropatterns (i.e. prevents them from being a more uniformed silver)

Oh and also, to add to my last comment, I do also have a genuine scindapsus Lucens, which is absolutely beautiful. It is often confused with the Anadendrum Affine, but when I compare the 2 side by side, I'd recognize the actual Lucens any day. I find the Ana. Affine is very smooth and veiny, the actual Lucens doesn't have super prominent veins, or at least mine doesn't, and they appear to have very slight bumps in their leaves. I will say the Ana. Affine is a beautiful plant too, love the coloring and veins! Ashame that one is often sold as the other. Confusing to some buyers :(

Kudos to you for tackling this. From what I can tell NO ONE can agree on what is and is not a Scindapsus. 😒 1. Treubii Moonlight is just as beautiful in pictures as it is in real life. In my experience, it does easily get leaf damage from too strong of light. Also Costa Farms has sold this as "Sterling Silver Scindapsus" in the US recently. 2. Pictures do not do Terubii Dark Form justice. It is a STUNNER but it grows PAINFULLY slow. They are difficult to find in the US (at least where I live), but it is 100% worth it to invest in a more mature plant vs. a cutting (that thing will stay tiny forever).
@horace6851
@horace6851 2 года назад
Treubii dark doesn't grow too slow for me. It likes PON and it pushes new leaves reasonably fast (haven't counted but since I got my cutting it grew about 10 inches in 6 months. I know it seems slow but some Scindapsus can grow one leaf during similar timeframe :) I think Treubii dark is very sensitive to rot and Pon really helps with the issues.

Both the ekor merak & Cat’s eye is Scaphochlamys, a family of the ginger plants, I heard people mistaken it for Scindapsus because it resembles treubii. Also, because it’s easier to market it as Scindapsus, a plant people are more familiar with. But they really are a very nice plant, sort of like a Jewel orchid kind of setting fits them very well; they also produce a cute flower shaped like an orchid too, they grow like kaempferia/calathea like most ginger houseplants does. Hope to see more people falling in love with this plant!

True…. Ekor Merak (which literally means Peacock’s Tail in Indonesia) is different from Scindapsus, especially in terms of care. They need more humidity in general than Scindapsus and much more water.

I find that the ones i have in my grow tent grow quickly because of the extra humidity v. the ones that are mounted on my walls to trail. Curious to see if any new interesting ones pop up.

Some notes on your video here! Keep in mind I’m in the United States and rarity may differ here. Great video by the way! Neon Stripe/Cat Eye is NOT a scindapsus. It’s actually a type of ginger! Super cute though. Treubii moonlight is WAY more common in the US and is very inexpensive. I bought a full 6” pot for $20 last year. I really like reunion dark form but it is harder to find here and is more expensive. They’re both glossy and moonlight is very silvery and cute! Hederaceus is actually nicknamed “Blue Satin” and not “Silver” here. It’s not silvery in the slightest. The leaves look to be more waxy to me but I don’t own one. Very cute though and would love to own it. I own a Tattoo and it’s very prone to rot. Not a big fan, really underwhelming. Trading mine away actually. Jade Satin looks really ugly in the pictures, but it’s way better in person! Very satiny and soft feel. I love mine and highly recommend you look at it in person before making a final judgement. Tricolor is very underwhelming in person. I have a few friends who own it and it doesn’t live up to the hype. It is a real thing though! Hope you do an update index soon! Love what you do!

@meghanjohnson1175 Год назад
Tattoo is simply scindapsus pictus argyreus large form, with an induced mechanical injury that prevents the leaves from developing highly functional leaf crystal macropatterns. So the microscopic crystals that reflect light, making species of this genus appear to have silver variegation, don't function as they normally would and it results in a more splotchy appearance. Every specimen we have studied in the lab eventually begins looking like ab exotica. Also, tri color is injected with chemicals to produce unnatural pigments and it fades within 1-5 years
@meghanjohnson1175
@meghanjohnson1175 Год назад
Also, hederaceus is not a TRUE hederaceus. True hederaceus does develop a deep blue hue with high levels of potassium and phosphorus (such as blue form rio) but it also has distinctive winged petioles. It's rumored the plant being called hederaceus isn't even a scindapsus

Oh I was SO excited for this video, I loooove scindapsus. I just got a small 1 leaf black mamba/bentol, a new leaf has come out from it and it looks like a silvery anne (or another type with silver flecks), the juvenile leaves look nothing like the mature ones! It is quite woody as you mentioned, I have noticed that the roots haven't grown out of the woody part at the bottom where it was cut...but instead out of the back (aerial roots) which is odd, I just have it laying on a bed of spag moss and it's loving that 😂 I also have a "scindapsus" cat eye/neon stripe...it's quite juvenile and small so it hasn't vined for me yet, not sure if it will or not but time will tell! It'd be awesome if it would vine one day :) I personally don't believe it is actually scindapsus purely based on the leaf shape...the leaves on every other scindapsus I own are all the same curved asymmetrical shape and thats pretty unique to scindapsus. But regardless it is a very cool.plant...whatever it is 😂

Hi from the Philippines! Here, the most common Scindapsus varieties are Exotica, Argyraeous, Silver Lady, Silvery Anne, Treubuii Moonlight and Dark Form. We also have a Jade Satin Dark Form which I believe is a legit variety. Agree though with your point that the other 'varieties' could possibly be 'mutations' or sport versions of the main ones. For example, we have Silver Splash, Trebie, Sumatera, which I think are versions of Exotica, though when I see them side by side, I do notice some differences. Again to your point, Scindapsus in general are really hard to tell apart 😅 Just wanted to say too that I really appreciate your reminder not to buy a plant just because it's rare because it won't complete you. Yes to buying a plant coz you love it 💚 As always, looking forward to your videos! Thank you Kaylee!

I think you might like the jade dark form. It's wild how different availability is for each area. In central Illinois, the treubii is the most commonly found in the last 9 months or so because of big box stores. It's everywhere. Dark form is more uncommon but I think it will pop up there soon. Silvery Anne can have less silver than argyraeus because not all are crusted nicely with silver. (A light thing maybe?) It's easier for me to tell by the uneveness of the pattern dispersement. Silvery Anne is less even. Silver Lady is one of my favorites! With the right lighting it gets dark and sparkly at night. I'd never heard of the treubii milk. Underwhelming for me. Black mamba & mayari are still 😍. And basically everything you mentioned after except that last one. 🤣 Thanks so much for this Rare Plant Index!

There is another Scindapsus treubii I have seen on Etsy that is basically the Dark Form with a thick silver stripe on either side of the midrib that was labeled “Dark Silver”. Based on the photos, it does look like it could be legit. Fascinating list! I have loved Scindapsus, but find them actually really difficult to care for in terms of watering for me. Some are fast growing and others are not. My treubii dark form has put out one leaf in the last 6 months.

Very very very VERY glad to have this video - scindapsus sooooo underrated! Treubii (both moonlite n dark form) are actually my 1st scindapsus bfr getting the pictus ... they are nice and for me (in SEA) easier to grow, maintain. Dark form yes noyt dark dark like ZZ raven but ok, glossy wax more so than moonlight. Jade satin is actually hard to find in SG - so mmm... Treubii are smooth (wax like) then pictus Got my exotia pictus from National Park SG - they are my all time FAV - the sliver, the leaves - to die! For me they are precious n RARE :) yes, scindapsus - for me: they are slower to grow n can be a bit fussy w water feeds. once settled, they r sturdy. love love love them!

I've also purchased about 50 lucens. I have maybe 2 left. They do not like water. You could put them in moss next to a humidifier and never water them and they'd be fine, I think. But they also seem to like airflow and colder temps. So yeah, total pain but so pretty.

I love scindapsus it was the first family I considered collecting when I first started out. I actually have a true argy dark form and can conform that the leaves are extremely darker than regular argy and come in more round. The specks in the middle aren't as contrasting as the regular argy, but they pair well with the black and almost look like a dark gray against the dark leaves.

I have some of these scindapsus and my favorites are the silver cloud, lucens & silver splash (tricolor?). The lucens have very thin leaves & slow grower. A lot of my scindapsus plants were eaten by slugs after a prolonged rainy season but thankfully they survived albeit with little leaves left. The scindapsus officianalis has thin leaves compared to the treubii moonlight & dark form which have thick leaves. The officianalis does look like the scindapsus Sumatra. I love scindapsus plants because they're easy to grow (except the lucens) so I'll keep collecting even if they're rare or not

I gotta say one thing, I own a lot of scindapsis. I have platinum, silver hero, silver lady, splash, etc. Silver Lady is STUNNING next to any other silver marked scindapsis. When I got it in, I fell in love. It has crisp borders on all the silver and silver lady always has a complete silver edge to the leaf. The leaf shape is one of my favorite parts, a delicate sort of shape almost like a heart shaped comma. It really does look like each leaf is a stylized drawing of itself. My exotica has leaves nearly the size of my face, my silver lady is the size of my palm. Its really perfectly named, I can't recommend it enough! Also Jade Satin is beautiful in person, it may surprise you. It has the leaf texture of platinum or silver hero. It reflects almost nothing, very matte and soft in terms of light absorption.

I have the scindapsus treubii moonlight. The new leaves are semi-shiny and lighter green, and as they harden and darken, they become matt finish. Oh and they are slow growers. but each vine node spacing is very tight so this plant always looks more tightly bunched and fuller. Ontario Canada.

The best way to tell between anadendrum affine and lucens is lucens doesn't have as dark of veining as the anadendrum does. It's also more of a tealish silver color compared to the anadendrum that is a blueish silver. It also has a more pillowy leaf texture.

The Cat eye is actually in the ginger family. I bought one just because I was curious. Once I saw the roots, and growth - It’s clearly not a scindapsus. The roots look like ginger. I did some research and Im almost certain it’s in the Zingiberaceae family. Still a cool plant though. The Jade Scindapsus in person is gorgeous. I thought the same until I saw one, but it has this gorgeous satin matte finish on the leaves. And totally agree that some of the “varieties” for sale seem like BS. I own most of these and especially on the silver variation the leaves to just vary. I could easily take a specific cutting on my exotica and sell it as variety going for a much higher price.
