There is no doubt that prices for rare tropical houseplants, especially aroids like philodendron, anthurium, monstera, and alocasia, has gone through the roof this year. I recently got to visit my buddy Jake, a well known and respected rare aroid collector in Los Angeles (follow him @keepyourplantson_la on Instagram), and was able to discuss the topic of prices. We also talked about plant swaps and filmed some of his variegated monstera. He has quite the collection of thai constellation, albo borsigiana, the yellow aurea, and mint monstera. Some plant care tips are shared as well =)

As a consumer, I do sometimes get frustrated with the pricing and availability of rare plants. However, Jake makes great points about supply and demand as well as how long it takes to grow a plants. I think also as consumers we get caught up in what is the "trendy" /must have plants. So many people feel like in order to have great IG page or RU-vid chanel that they need to have impressive and rare specimens to attract followers. I have to remind myself that I don't need to have it now and to be more aware of the growing habits of plants cause they will affect the supply and eventually the price. I got my first Rhaphidora Tetrasperma for $65 from England. Last week, I got one for $5. The same thing is happening with the Raven ZZ and the Philodendron Gloriosum. This is a great series! Thank you for sharing!

I am thankful for the trends because without them I wouldn't have found out about some stuff. (Like variegated monsteras!) It's so random that monsteras got hot. my family has always had them just hanging out in the backyard. I think it's so exciting to see things get popular like plant collecting. How cool is it that people are excited about plants and horticulture?!

Thank you for posting this video! 😁 While I do not believe in price shaming sellers, nor do I believe in telling people how to spend their money, I do believe there is a limit to what is "fair" to charge for houseplants. In my humble opinion, UNLESS a plant being sold is legitimately one of a kind, and not just "rare", these prices are too high for my taste. In my opinion, there is no reason why a 6 inch (or smaller) potted plant should cost more than $20,000 dollars, which could afford you as many as 50 Nintendo Switches, a brand new car like a Honda Civic, or a year of College depending on where you live. When you put it into a perspective like this, it seems crazy.

You uploaded super early Jimmy, I would have a hard time getting up for work that early! I am very lucky to have 3 variegated monsteras and the best thing of all is I only paid $50 for all of them! The first 2 I got from my university's greenhouse since I co-manage them. I am studying clinical laboratory sciences, but like you, I also have a love for plants! I am very lucky to get to help with the greenhouses here, but I am sad to have to leave the plants for an internship next school year. My mom thinks I should switch my major, but I think the medical field is my passion and plants is just my hobby. The last monstera that I paid $50 for, I got on a facebook group (and it's not a wet stick either!). There definitely are ways to find them affordable, you just have to be patient! Keep up the good content! I imagine it's hard to balance work, life, and this RU-vid channel. 🙂

Haha I only recently found out that “wet stick” is a term now haha. I was able to do a lot of editing and uploading of these episodes before I left for vacation so these were just scheduled for public release. I’m going to let them go public earlier in the day because it seems a lot of my viewers wake up pretty early. Glad you were able to find your monsteras at a reasonable price. Takes some patience and luck for sure 🤗

It’s so funny to see, as a person from Belgium, what you consider rare or expensive. Some plants you call rare are here like available everywhere (like tetrasperma, giant ones for maybe 20 euros). On the other side, the prives for thai constellation is 3x to 4x the amount of the albo. On another note, it’s really refreshing to see your views on the prices. I definitely need to be more active on plants group and instagram. Only talked too 2/3 people and already learned sooo much. Love all your videos btw soo down too earth and informative. Lots of love!!

! I love them but you have to decide what the priorities are... there's one being auctioned off by Steve's leaves and it's already up to $450 but it's huge there to cuttings so true plants in the pot and if you wanted to cut it up and propagate you probably could get six plants out of it so if you had the money and the place to propagate it would be a good deal but there's no guarantees at all the cuttings would live who knows how much it'll be at the end of the auction in a week it's crazy
@eyesclosed3709
@eyesclosed3709 4 года назад
I'm starting to hate the whole "rare plant" fad. A lot of these plants are expensive because they are in high demand and the sellers know people will buy them for the astronomical prices, not because there would be very little of them. I have some plants that are never called rare, yet noone ever sells them, and I don't really ever see people online owning them, so if you wanted one you couldn't get it, because there's no demand for them, they are not what's considered cool and enviable right now. But each to their own, and everyone should judge for themselves if spending so much money on a plant will make them happy and it's worth it for them
@LegendsOfMonstera

@@eyesclosed3709 Steve's leaves had to go to auction when they have available variegated monstera is. The reason why is the minute they listed it crashed their whole system and was very expensive to get it up and running. They're not trying to make money off of the plant they're just trying to save their business grade expenses and people are unbelievable that they'll pay all those prices for those plants I seen people pay over $100 for a plant that's considered rare and has like one leaf and that one's damage I don't understand it. Would I love to have a variegated monstera either variety of course but I'm not spending $1,000 on one. Think about all the poverty and problems in the world that could be helped with five bucks

Really enjoying this series featuring Jake. He seems to have a very grounded outlook on plant ownership-a refreshing change from the crazy demand for unicorn plants. His collection is envious and I certainly appreciate his knowledge and experience. I agree with your suggestion of "collecting what you love." Great video! I’m not sure if there’s a number that makes you a collector, per se, but I really resonated with the term “ Collector-Seller”. I really only sell plants after I’ve made a big investment in their care. Like “oh crap. I just bought a lot of grow lights. Time to sell a plant😅” & much like their care, acquiring plants really is a waiting game 👏🏼👏🏼 The prices really do fluctuate often. I always like looking at some of my plants that I’ve paid like $8 for are now selling for easily 10x’s that amount.

Weird right?? Haha. All types of sanseveria. All kinds of Trichocereus but peruvianus is my fave. Euphorbias. Crassula. I can go on and on. Avout 8 yrs ago here in Florida, an Ace Hardware Nursery was selling Variegated Monstera deliciosa for around $12. As a 20 yr long plant collector, I knew what they were and bought three. Living in a V. Monstera forest now lol. The prices sure have went up drastically since then. A lot of the Jewel Alocasias were sold as little plugs by by ebay sellers like Wellspring several yrs ago for around $5.99. Also saw these at local nurseries for about $12 for a 8inch pot. Now they are fairly rare too now. Ditto for Pink Princess Philo. I bought 3 decent cuttings 5 yrs ago on ebay for less than $20. Many anthuriums and Rhaphs are just getting into the expensive catagory. Used to be dirt cheap. See them at Walmarts and HD. I wouldnt be surprised to see bromeliads making a comeback to mainstream either. Right now they are still cheap. Hurry Lol!! I am hoping Epiphyllums come back too.

I'm lucky I'm such a pleb, lol. I'm such a scrub in every hobby I go into, that while I absolutely admire the "hot stuff", I never feel like I *need* it. I don't get frustrated that I can't get my hands on the pretties, I just look at all the other goodies and get something in my range that I love. Oh, and then I fill my want with video tours like yours, with good people sharing their gorgeous collections. Thank you for helping with that part! My hot take: No matter if we're talking art supplies, tropical fish, Magic cards, plants or what ever, it's all just hobbies/collections. If we get mad or palpably sad about not having access to a certain plant or card or ? I really feel we need to examine with ourselves why that is, because then it's probably not about that Variegated Monstera, but about a hole in our psychological needs that even a plant as gorgeous as that will never be able to fill. We all want a healthy collection of beautiful, happy plants, and I think Healthy Collection covers why we want to have that collection and what it does for us to have it. But that's just me. :) Cheers

I have a cube that probably only cost me like 60USD all in all, and we draft that. Thai Constellation and P. gloriosum can be bought directly in Thailand for a relatively normal price (shipping and papers cost more, but buying more than one will help). I'll get mine in spring. I'm talking about $ 35 for a monstera Thai and ~$50 shipping and papers. $ 48 for a P. gloriosum is fine.

Hi Jimmy, I have a question about maintaining variegation in a monstera borsigiana albo. I have a cutting that now has 5 leaves, but the oldest leaf is the greenest (speckled blotchy), but the leaves have continued to get more and more sectoral white, and the most recent leaf is all white. (All videos/info I can find discuss cutting off all green leaves) It also lost fenestrations, appearing a juvenile form. I know this leaf has no chlorophyll. Should I cut it off now? Or wait to see what the next leaf looks like? Any chance the plant may correct itself and send out more balanced leaves? There is the faintest light green streak in the stem...but it's super light... thank you!
@LegendsOfMonstera
@LegendsOfMonstera 4 года назад
Hi Vera. You are describing what some people refer to as “the white curse”. Basically the opposite of reversion and probably happens just as often. The plant gets more and more white until it produces completely white leaves and slowly withers due to lack of enough chlorophyll to sustain the plant. If I were you, I would wait to see if it continues with another leaf. But as you mention that the green in the stem is minimal, your chances of it reverting to more green are low. If the next leaf is 90% or more white, I would chop it back to where the stem has a more even white/green ratio. I’m having one plant of mine do this right now :( Hope this helps. Cheers!

That is great advice - buy the plant that you love, not the plant that people tell you you should love. I just bought a peperomia caperata last week because I've wanted one for a long time. They're everywhere. Any grocery store, nursery, gas station (well, maybe not) has them, but I waited for the size that I wanted and finally found a little one. All these youtubers and instagrammers are all about the adansonii and quite frankly, that plant does nothing for me. I'm quite content to not have to hunt day and night for this ridiculously overpriced plant when I have my nice, cheap little peperomia in my house, doing spectacularly well, I might add. If someone offers me a free cutting, will I turn it down just because the plant is only ho hum for me? Heck no! It's a plant! A FREE plant! But I'm not spending $70 for a small, sad hanging basket just to say that I have one. Yes, that's how much they are where I live.

@LegendsOfMonstera

I have not been convinced that chlorine or fluoride makes a difference in aroids. The only semi-convincing lead I have that there is an effect is that I see lots of people in Europe, where the water doesn’t have fluoride I hear (?), with gorgeous calathea orbifolia with perfect leaves. The orbifolia is insanely difficult to keep in good condition and I wonder if it’s because the water here is fluoridated. That’s really the only convincing piece of evidence I have come across, and even then it’s probably limited to calatheas.
