not quite so... the main reason why trains on this line was overcrowded is because in circa 1990 the signalling system was altered in a way that reduced the number of trains that could be run. I have a 1982 timetable and between Liverpool Street and Ilford there were 22 trains in the busiest part of the evening rush hour. Nowadays the most trains that are run in the evening rush hour are 16 trains. btw, the busiest Underground lines have 30+ trains an hour at the busiest times of day but this is only good when the stations can cope with so many passengers (platforms, walking routes etc).

the problem on this route is that it is so very busy - at one time there were over 20 trains in the busiest hour during the evening rush hour but signalling changes in circa 1990 reduced line capacity to just 15 trains ... it was thought that severe overcrowding (from fewer trains) was more acceptable than allowing trains to travel on 'double yellow' signals instead of green. When this service became part of the Elizabeth line Crossrail service they attempted to solve the overcrowding by using longer trains, but what the line really needs is more frequent trains

​​@@CitytransportInfoplus It's perfectly possible to increase the peak frequency from 12tph to 15tph alongside increasing the length of the trains from 9-Car to 11-Car. That should provide a capacity increase of 50%.

Alas, although the Class 315 trains were built for the route from Liverpool St to Shenfield some are now used as part of the London Overground franchise. Because of this TfL Rail can not operate as rush hour service which is as frequent as British Rail did in the 1980s!

probably the power collection shoes reaching the short gaps in power supply rails - when this happens where a train is accelerating it is common to see 'arcing' as the DC power jumps through the air, until the distance has become too great.

yes (mostly) but without the multicolour stripes from when this service was called ONE
