You do not need the CD card to play the Super CD games on the Turbo Duo. All that was built into the system. That was the advatage of having the Duo over the TG 16 with the CD attachment.

The only system card that you can ever use to play CD games on the Turbo Duo would be the Arcade Card, at least with an adapter. Keep in mind that NEC made two versions of the Arcade Card. The Arcade Card Duo is for PC Engine systems that have the Super CD-ROM² System, and the Arcade Card Pro, which combines the functionality of the Super System Card and Arcade Card Duo. The Arcade Card Pro is specifically designed for PC Engine systems with a CD-ROM² System.

Yup, I used to own a DUO and I can confirm like others have said: you DONT need a system card to play CD games. In fact, if you use that orange system CD card he shows you are actually downgrading your console, since the DUO has a Super System card built in, which is better than the basic system CD card

I like how you don't just show us the system. You give a little history lesson about it. Subscribed. Keep up the good work, your doing gamers a favor by keeping all these old consoles alive.

In Japan it continued to sell strong until 1995, which was around the time that SNES and Genesis sales also tapered off. NEC and TTI had no clue what they were doing in the US.

Just to let you know you do not need that card in the unit to play the CD games on the DUO. That was only needed for the Turbographx 16 when you had the add on. The whole point of the DUO was everything was built in. And the reason you needed the card on the other unit is it adds extra memory :)

05:26 -- I'm calling shenanigans! The PC-Engine Duo (Or the Turbo Duo FTM), both came with the Super CD² ROM, ROM v3.0 AS STANDARD! The only Guys that needed a System Card (as shown in TS 05:26, were for those that only had the TG-16, and the CD add on. The ONLY Add-on of this type that the Duo had AFAIK was the Arcade Card, which was only used in like what Two Games?! King of Fighters '93 being One of them.

hey man great picture, rush rules. i just ordered a pc engine duo, wanted one since its release and only now getting it. i got scared when i heard him in the video say u need the cd card to use the drive, but it appears from your comment its not the case? could you clarify for me? thanks
@Ichijoe2112
@Ichijoe2112 9 лет назад
getitnow2010 You ONLY need the card IF you have the basic PC-Engine / Turbo Graphics System which uses the CD-Rom Add-on. (i.e. IIRC Its basically consists of Three Parts the PC-E / TG, The CD-ROM Drive and a Dock that holds it all together. For such Systems you WILL NEED a System3 Card. The PC-Engine Duo (All Versions!), and the TurboDuo however are All-in-One Systems, that already have the System Card built into them. So you won't need to worry about it. The only System Card that would be any use to Duo Owners may be the Arcade Card. But AFAIK this only came out in Japan, and only supports about less then Six Games. But, you again you DO NOT have to worry about the System3 Card if what you have is a Duo, and not the NEC Version of the Sega Tower. lol...
@getitnow2010
@getitnow2010 9 лет назад
cool. i just bought my first duo after all these years, japanese version. i thought it wouldn't need the cd card to work but this video made me question that. i'll surely buy the arcade card as well since the roms are easily available and burnable for all cd games, thanks for the clarification man!

I definitely enjoy your reviews. Just picked one of these up! It would be worth adding a comment onto the video that the CD card is not needed (the TurboDuo has super system CD 3.0 built in) - this has been pointed out by numerous other watchers (ungibbed, Jeffrey Seymore, danzk, getitgetitgetit2, jferio, IAmEmphy, avenuePad, MrTechnoSqueek, pmrproductions, Ace9921, Sam Everline). I think that's one of the great things about the system - you don't need that expensive card! Thanks

On the Turbo Duo, the CD system card in this video was designed for the original TurboGrafx CD system. Using the system card on the Would not allow you the ability to play Super CD titles. Fire up the console without the card in the slot and the Super CD ROM 2 was baked into the Duo hardware.

Thank You! I LOVE NEC!
@avenuePad
@avenuePad 13 лет назад
@MrTechnoSqueek You're right. The Turbo Duo had the SuperCDROM2 card built in, so you don't need the CD System card or the SuperCD System Card. The only System Card you would need is the Arcade Card, which was only released in Japan. The Arcade Card was another upgrade in RAM that produced some nice games, including the best Neo Geo ports out there. Out of the box, the US Duo can play all US HuCards, CDROM2 games and SuperCDROM2 games, both Japanese and US. The CD games weren't region locked.
@majesticlizard

@getitgetitgetit2: Yeah, I also caught that. The Turbo Duo has the system 3 card built in. It also isn't region locked for the CD games, only the Turbo Chips.

Thanks for the memories. While I liked SNES best, I loved my TurboDuo. At the time the music was amazing. I played Ys, Bomberman and Bonk's Adventure to death and Gate of Thunder is one of my fave shooters to this day. In fact, GoT was the first game I bought from Wii's Virtual Console. I disagreed when AVGN commented that CD gaming just wasn't ready at that time. We TurboDuo owners were playing great games on CD! Its just that Sega chose to go with a ton of FMV games.

another great video John. Even with the flub up about needing the cd system card to play the cd games. The price for sure is the only reason I have yet to obtain one of these, but it'd be nice to retire the bulky TG16CD. I also found out yesterday too, that there was an Adventure Island 4 for the famicom. You can get a repro cart for the nes, since the famicom version is expensive. Amazing the shit I learn on a daily basis. keep up the good work.

CORRECTION: you don't need any card at all to play CD or Super CD games on the Turbo Duo (or the PC Engine Duo). Those system cards were only made to enhance the original TurboGrafx + CD add-on. Once the Turbo Duo came out, all that stuff was built right into it. BTW, Chris Bucci told you this on the All Gen Gamers podcast about the TurboGrafx, and you laughed about "Oh, that's what I was doing wrong" or something. Someone's getting senile! heheh

@fmdof
@fmdof 13 лет назад
@dave4shmups on ebay you'll prolly pay 100ish. the turbo booster's (as of late it seems) are harder to come by, and the turbo booster plus (which allows you to save) is even harder. prolly about 40-50 for the tg16, and an additional 40-50 for the booster. Then add in shipping. if the auction comes with games other than Keith Courage, that'll effect price too. You're better off either getting the turbo duo or the turbo grafx with cd, as they have the av output.

System Cards are not necessary for playing CD games on any Duo system. (Unless we're talking about Arcade CDs, but there are very few of those) I have heard there's a couple of games that needs it, but I'm not too sure about that claim. The Turbo Duo is the same as the PC-E Duo, while the grey Duo-R and Duo-RX systems are just different variations. Only the Hue card part is region locked, CDs are region free on the Duo systems. Great video though as usual. :)

The Duo made a lot of sense if you didn’t own the tg16 console. If you did own the console the CD attachment coupled with the console looked cooler than the duo in my opinion. I loved the tg16 console

@dave4shmups Usually the system goes for $50-60 loose now with the Booster going for about the same. But, do yourself a favor: if you can, and that's a big IF because they are hard to find, get the Turbo Booster Plus. It's the same as the Turbo Booster, but includes RAM so you can save data for TurboChips/HUcards that need it, like Dungeon Explorer.

TurboGrafx wasn't available in Australia as far as I know, I think that's a shame, it didn't do well in Europe either, though it was released there in very small quantities I believe. @Callia123 You can try pcenginesales. Seller and refurbisher based out of the UK. She used to be a lot more active, but not really sure. She has a store by that name on eBay. But you can go to pcenginefxdotcom and there are a lot of people there from around the world that could help you out. If you do end up picking one up, make sure that the sound capacitors have been replaced. It's a VERY common problem with the US Duo. The Japanese Duos used different caps and are more reliable.

That's weird on the CD card, my friend Mike has TurboDuo that's his primary TG16 system, and I don't think he has to use the CD card for standard TurboCD games. I've got the regular TG16. And the TurboTap requirement is really odd and occasionally frustrating. Especially given the TurboDuo's use of the PCEngine port over the TG16 port.

These days japanese games are just so wierd that no one outside of japan would even take them seriously. But I never considered the games in japan better. There were only a few that I wish hit the USA. Especially now that you can play them on emulator and see that they really weren't really any better. As far as Turbo Duo goes, yeah it does seem like they got all the games that best used the system's capabilities. But in general with other systems they were about the same as US games.
