To be fair mate, you can't really imply their desktop kit is expensive when you're advertising aluminium wallets that start at 65 quid.

I personally think that pi 4 is a really viable option. I am a sucker for low memory programs, I program on vim, I use low memory browsers. I hardly ever reach 2 gigs of ram on my 8gb Linux pc, but the older versions of Pi were not good enough for my desktop use. So I will be buying the 4 gig version of the Pi for its low power usage and portability. I don't think that this is a great update for the tinkerer, but it is an amazing update for low-ram desktop usage.

@@eusebiusthunked5259 I use suckless.org's surf and qutebrowser. I also use midori on my ancient laptop with only 2 gigs of ram. TL;DR Surf=lightest, hard to configure Midori=lighter, outdated ui qutebrowser=light, vim keybindingd Surf requires the lowest ram, loads every page in an instant. You don't even wait for it to launch lol. However, it requires lots of configuration to be actually useful. By default, you can only launch a site from a terminal, there is no toolbar or even a url bar. But this is on purpose, it is customizable in every bit you can imagine. Second up is Midori, it uses just a little more ram. Its ui feels kinda outdated, but it works just great out of the box, it is very lightweight. Lastly there is qutebrowser. It takes much more ram than the others, but still much less ram than most browsers out there. However, it operates with vim-like keybindings, which is why I use it as my default, but not everyone is a fan of that.

The micro HDMI port broke at the day after I got my PI4 2GB. I returned it to the store, and ordered a 4GB version + 2xMicroHDMI2HDMI converter, which I intend to build into a case. I think a lot of PI4 will be headerless in a few years, because their micro HDMI ports are broken. One or two micro display ports would have been a far better option. I was making a joke about the USB-C hardware design fault on the Pi-4. Big disadvantage is the energy consumption but batterries are now becoming cheap per watt.

I got my first pi 3b+ after years of tinkering with a Pi 1 B+. I can't see what all the complaints were about. The 3b+ streams really good in my view as long as it is kept cool if watching full movies or shows. Sure streaming top resolution can drop frames, but 360 to 720 work just fine. I think it has improved because of chromium finally getting some hardware acceleration. Believe me I have been around to try to watch videos online on socket 7 hardware. If you're talking about LAN parties, then no, cloud gaming makes no sense on LAN since the game is running on a computer in the cloud and not on LAN. Personally, I'm going to use it to replace my old Pentium HTPC and use my old PC as a NAS. Gigabit ethernet and 4k support were the only things holding me back from using a Pi 3 as a HTPC. It would also be cool if I could get steam link working on it.

@@adrianogrisanti6731 Yeah, Etcher blue screened my laptop 3 times, long story short it ended up somehow corrupting itself and causing a blue screen because it overwrote over a different programs memory in ram and caused the other program to read the wrong thing. Etcher apparently blue screens a lot, despite most other imaging programs working fine.

I've been waiting for a Pi to finally give us a decent amount of RAM, decouple the Ethernet and USB and provide an interface for a little better storage performance (USB 3.0 at PCI-e 1x speeds will do). I understand the focus of your video is the odd desktop replacement focus that the Pi Foundation have been touting, but the video title is clickbait. The Pi 4 isn't overhyped; it's a pretty big deal.

I'm told repeatedly that the extra HDMi is for the advertising industry.. I would have thought they could use specific hardware instead of buying a maker SBC. I had to buy cables, and use a stanley knife to trim the plastic housing on them so they would actually fit side by side since they are quite close together. (I don't need two displays - I just wanted to try it) Most of my pis run headlessly.

dual display ports are there for one of most common pi uses : home media center; also, if by desktop one means web on large screen - like typing in google docs + yt - no problem, even 14 y.o. intel centrino laptop under linux is a viable desktop; games and windows specific dev apps (3dsmax) - if you dont need those, but simple typewriter, pi4 is way way overpowered desktop pc

Having 4GB of RAM means you can use a web browser on it comfortably. Agreed it's not a true replacement for a modern desktop, but it shines as a second computer to play around with, or to let kids play with. I also don't understand the need for dual HDMI out, but the faster proc plus faster IO plus 4x the RAM are welcome indeed.

2x 4k video display steering is also a nice way to enable Art-Installations, 4k in general for Picture Frames or Picture show on a big TV is nice and it suggests more power to those applications - meaning 1080p video might not overheat as fast as before. (not tested by me though)

Also the Pi4 type-c has a hardware design flaw, getting corrected in Pi5 and flash storage badly needed, SD just no good limited life span. And let’s hope Type-C for all connections get that hight down so room for a storage fitted on top can be added that keeps the height about the same when used
@Nikarus2370
@Nikarus2370 5 лет назад
You grumble that it's better for the industry customers... but you never actually give a reason why it's any less useful to a hobbyist or a school than previous models outside of "new cables". USBC is basically the standard going forward for charging ports on everything there's no issue with updating to this. MicroHDMI, just because you can't think of a use for 2 ports, doesn't mean hobbyists can't, and the negative effect on the hobbyist is minimal.

I plan to use the two HDMI outputs to drive projectors or displays for my band during performances. Additionally, I will connect my DMX lights to it and use Reaper as my click track, backing track, and DMX sync through the pi. This saves tons of space in my rack and the dual hdmi outputs will definitly come in handy here. But I recognize that I am a special case. :-) One of my students in studying robotics and he is especially interested in the dual hdmi out. He actually doesn't care about the resolution, but that it has dual video outs natively. Some rh ing about allowing two drivers simultaneously in competetions with full wireless screens for data and cameras for seperate functions... Above my pay grade. Lol! I definitly will not use it to replace my desktop, however, except as my REAPER-based light, video, and audio control for stage. It is somewhat easy to make it boot from USB already, several people created a way to do it. It will be nice when it is officially supported by default.
