I also wanted a 'nearly bare metal' quick boot into Amiga so I installed Dietpi which has an option to install and boot straight into Amiberry. I set up a 1200 with HD (and WHDload) and it works amazing, really quick boot. I use an Arduino pro micro as an adapter to plug my old c64/Amiga DB9 joysticks in, which completes the experience :)

@PaulRoneClarke

First. Great video. What I write below is a bit tongue in cheek. But the bit about me giving upon Retropie and renovating a real A1200 is true. (and finding it easier to do than setting up games on Retropie is also true - maybe that's just me) The thing is. Once you get going you then have to spend about 40 minutes with each game configuring it through the Pi Linux interface. Menu nested under menu nested under menu. Every alteration requiring enter a menu tree several clicks long, with duplicated menu descriptions, misleading menu descriptions and no standardisation on how each menu level functions. - Page of options... Scroll down one click at a time...click the option. - Another page of options. Scroll down one click at a time... Click one. - Another page of options that seems to include the last option you clicked again... click one. - Choose the model of Amiga you want. - Click 3x to get out. - Damn it didn't save. Ok start again click click click. Ok - after 5 minutes you have the Amiga model... Menu. Click Menu. Click Menu. Click Now how much Fast Ram? ... ... Start again Then what Workbench is it? Start again What control method do you want.. Oh god not the bloody awful joystick configuration "Press a button for left" Press a button for right".. "No the other right" FINALLY Ok boot up the game... Doesn't work. Won't tell you why it doesn't work Give up. With obtuse and misleading descriptions and a frankly arcane navigation system that leaves you exiting things you want to be entering and altering things you didn't mean to. Only to find that the game in question won't play at all on the the Pi anyway. After repeating this for 2 or 3 games and getting completely frustrated - you boot up Amiga Forever on your PC - and the game just plays. First time. And on the very rare occasions when it doesn't a right click, edit and a few changes to the configuration tab - where everything is written in English not "muggle speak" and the navigation is "Right click opens. Click box to active options - press "Ok" to close and save" and you have an R9 format files that just work. Every time. More annoyance follows when you realise that although the Pi400 is cheap-sort of. You can pick up a 6 year old laptop - that comes with its own screen, and is more powerful and plays everything just sweet - for less cash And through Amiga Forever rather than through the Retropie "Designed with people with 4 PhD.s in computer science" is Playing console games on Retro pi is simplicity itself. Easy. Almost all are click and run. Setting up old 8 and 16 bit computers on Retropie for my money just isn't worth the time and effort. To the point I bough an original Amiga 1200, cleaned it up, added an accelerator card, replaced the the Gayle chip.. and soldered a faulty PSU connector. And found that far FAR easier than messing with setting up Amiga on the Retropie platform
@melvoid01
@melvoid01 3 года назад
I am finding this too,I got my 400 on the strength of a good deal of youtubers telling me setting up Retropie was simplicity itself, no it is not, far from it. Also got a C64 joystick because I was told that Retropie just recognises it, sort of, it knows what it is but will not let you use it I cannot get it to configure into a usable state endlessly in and out of menus without doing anything. I had/still have an original A500 and used it for many many years and have been using and building PC's for as long again but I am feeling like a 10 year old noob again when it comes to getting this stuff to do anything useful, I will stick with it maybe enlightenment will shine through and I will get my "oh now I see" moment. I will say though I can see the attraction, the 400 is a very slick kit I am just very rusty when it comes to absorbing this metal level stuff. Don't let my moaning put anyone thinking of getting one be put off just realise that most youtubers videos are based on the assumption that you are familiar with the PI ecosystem already. This guy retrobits though I find to be easier to understand than many others who just gloss over important steps because "everyone must know that already".

I just tried Retropie on a Pi 400. I noticed that Amiberry had a full second of audio lag in all games (WHDLoad lha's). Googling the issue it seems like a very common issue that they aren't in a rush to fix. As a newbie I also felt confused by configuration files in the Amiberry interface and making changes stick.

You forgot to mention one very important detail -at the very beginning you press the #A button# when you've configured the controller. You didn't mention it nor was it mentioned anywhere else but one place - in the RetroPie official guide. This small information could have saved me four hours of figuring out what to do. I could do the whole installation in 15 minutes instead of 4 hours. It just proves that attention to details is important. Having said that, your video did help me get through the first stages of the installation, so thank you. I should also point out that the Amiberry is still imperfect - about 50% of WHD games don't work, though the ones that do work, work flawlessly, and the sound is totally awesome, better than on other emulators!

Am I the only one who noticed that the Doom MIDI music seemed a bit... off? Like too much reverb, blending the first few notes of the lead instrument part into mush rather than the fast distinct riff it's supposed to be? Also, is this not rather perverse, emulating an Amiga to play Doom, when it could probably be done better just running it in Linux? I guess it proves a point, but IJS. When you can emulate an Amiga faster than an A4000 what do you do to flex? Run Doom.

It is as if the PI-400 is the new low cost Amiga. It really have taken off as such a machine. Hardware wise, I see it more as a modern version of the Acorn Archimedes. Basically an Archimedes that does solid Amiga emulation.
@koma-k
@koma-k 2 года назад
I'd say more of a spiritual successor to the BBC than the Archimedes, if for no other reason that the Archimedes required an optional "podule" to get the IO lines ;-)
@brostenen

@@koma-k But the BBC were not ARM architecture. By that logic, the Vampire V4 would be the spiritual successor to the Commodore 64.
@koma-k
@koma-k 2 года назад
@@brostenen True, but I could counter with Acorn using the BBC's 6502 as inspiration when developing the ARM architechture ;-) My point was just that the BBC and the RPi share the aspect of being geared towards experimentation and electronics tinkering. The Archimedes was more an attempt at the mainstream PC segment ("PC" in the wider sense, not x86 as it has grown to mean)
@brostenen
@brostenen 2 года назад
@@koma-k There are so many computing devices like that. The arduino are another thing for tinkering. Though the RPI is invented to be a programming tool in the first place. BBC micro went a bit further and were the result of the need to teach school children about computing in general and not exclusively programming. Exactly as the Danish Piccolo and the Piccoline. If you are Danish, then that were the result of a school program, that Bertel Haarder launched.
@koma-k
@koma-k 2 года назад
@@brostenen I'm discounting Arduino and the likes as these have a different history - essentially starting out with the intent to make microcontrollers easier to use for hobbyists. In terms of a direct "spiritual" and "intentional" successor to the BBC that would be the Micro:Bit, though as with the Arduino it's a different kind of device in that it's in no way stand-alone. The RPi 400 *is* a standalone computer, and it makes tinkering easier by making a good selection of I/O options easily accessible out of the box. That is why I view it as the closest thing to a descendant of the BBC. There may well be similar projects I'm not aware of though. As for the Piccolo/Piccoline: I was not familiar with them, not being Danish, but from what I can see they have a lot in common with their Norwegian counterpart the Tiki 100 (originally called Kontiki, but I believe Thor Heyerdahl objected to the naming)

So I did pay for the private access to the Amibian extended edition, and I must say I have been quite disappointed that there is no pi400 version yet. The work around is to run it on a regular pi 4, update then run on your pi400. Ridiculous. Was also saddened to see BM64 is not doing a pi4 version. @StefanHolmes 3 года назад
@@weaselsworld Partly as well, Amiga’s booted up into 640x256 (PAL) or 640x400 (NTSC) resolution. The factory fresh install of Workbench was designed for this 2:1 aspect, but the icons that are part of the install in this video were designed for 1:1, i.e. users who had purchased a multi sync monitor for their Amiga or are using an RTG card. It doesn’t help that the mouse pointer also gets stretched vertically when using original PAL/NTSC modes on a double-scan display... more hangover from legacy configurations. On original hardware, the mouse pointer sprite’s resolution was actually decoupled from the main display and would generally be set to a resolution that kept it looking correct in terms of aspect ratio.

@retrobitstv
@retrobitstv 2 года назад
Ah, cool that you spotted that! .gz is gzipped format and you can extract it with 7zip on windows, or gzip -d $filename.gz on a Linux or Mac terminal. You will definitely need to unzip the file before writing it to the sdcard.
@retrobitstv
@retrobitstv 2 года назад
Okay, so you've extracted the .gz file and are left with an uncompressed .img file. Then you write that image to your sdcard using Win32Disk Imager (instructions here www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/computers/getting-started.html#installing-images-on-windows) right? If you have an existing filesystem or data on the sdcard, it might also help to completely remove any existing partitions before starting using the windows disk management tool.

@@bobrandale4864 I probably had some software already copied to my sdcard which would account for the "3 games available". I used an Imac with either Etcher or Raspberry Pi imager. Managed to install Raspbian and Retropie on different sd cards. When you start Retropie leave a keyboard attached to cover any joypad setup mistakes and you can shut down the pi with keyboard combinations if your pad setting is messed up. It's not perfect, that Retropie. I recommend Blast 16 for slicker emulation, albeit adding games and artworks is laborious via usb stick. It's also limited to Sega. ITS GREAT with a retroflag case as it has shutdown scripts in the Blast software. The Retropie is archaic in comparison.
