Raspberry Pi 400 -- specifications and demo of the new, faster, keyboard-encased Raspberry Pi 4.
The Raspberry Pi 400 featured in this video was supplied before launch by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The video has therefore been flagged as a "paid promotion", as I received something "of value from a third party" that allowed me to make the video ahead of the product launch.
You can learn more about the Pi 400 on their website at www.raspberrypi.org/blog/rasp...

Mr. Barnatt, there's another impressive thing about this home computer, it's made in the UK. I wish here in the US we had a company manufacturing home computers again. Such a pity Commodore didn't survive it's crummy management team, they were literally just up the road from where I live (about an hour and half away). Sure, we have Apple, but they think their poop doesn't stink and charge ten times the price for it...UGH. --- and all their stuff is made in China.

9:27- Ah, Christopher, you wonderful fiend, there might be medications for what you got, but there ain’t no cure, and I’m willing to bet that _a lot_ of us wouldn’t have it any other way! I’m typing this in the US Midwest at about 3:30 in the A. M., at the beginning of what is looking to be the most eventful week of a lousy year-and this video has greatly improved the mood of at least this one household! Some wise guy may have proclaimed that it’s the tale and not he who tells it, but I say the messenger matters! Oh, and the Raspberry Pi 400! A computer integrated into the keyboard, and I don’t have to worry about finding the case? Looks like a no-brainer to me! My only quibble is that it’s the 4 gig version, and not the 8 gig, but I imagine that’ll come later....

FINALLY! Ever since the pi launched i've been hoping they would ship a version of the pi inside a keyboard. Partially for the convenience but also because it reminds me of computers like the commodore and others. I'm so happy to see this version launch. It could also do a lot for pi adoption as this is something you could easily give to someone as a simple linux computer.

For anyone wanting to know the cooling solution is that the chip is thermally connected to the Metal Shield via a Thermal pad. This shield spans the length of the cases and should provide a decent amount of cooling.

11:51 Brilliantly summed up, Christopher. I'm an 'oldie' too and started off with a Sinclair Spectrum in 1983. At school we had a Research Machines 380Z, at college Commodore PET and RM Nimbus computers. The first computer I had a proper tutorial with in a classroom was a Tandy TRS80 at an event put on by Tandy in Birmingham city centre in about 1982/3. It's amazing how we've gone from little boxes (micro computers) to big boxes (PCs) back to little boxes (mobile computing and System On a Chip). This Raspberry Pi 400 is an excellent present and is perfect for the lockdown!

What a great video - well done Chris. Yes I remember the heady days of the 80's doing exactly what you inferred - my system of choice was a TI99/4A and coding was the norm. Love this 'new' concept - still in the game as a road warrior, grey geek and this mobility is awesome!

Chris, I pre-date you a little, I got into computing when my employers moved off a Leo lll (tape operating system) onto an ICL system 4.50 mainframe. A vast roomful of iron boxes connected by 2" fat cables, it had wonderous new random access storage (3x 8mb exchangeable disc drives that I once put my back out lifting) but less ram and processing power than a poundshop calculator..... plus a separate building full of hvac plant and power provision. No such thing as networks. In fact no such thing as screens (not even green ones), because delay line memory functionality (buffering) hadn't been invented yet. We had a teletype, cards/paper tape and hundreds of reel to reel tapes. I finished in systems engineering and design in 2014. Still at it today but nobody is willing to pay me for it any more! .... and yes, I had a zx81.

Likewise, sort of. I got into the game ca. 1980, on DEC hardware (PDP 11/45), and courtesy of the Great Recession, the little niche market I worked in (multivalue databases) went the way of the Passenger Pigeon, and nobody wanted to hire a 40+ year old programmer/analyst with an outdated skill set. So...jumped ship, and went into healthcare. Still remember the day I got access to a real, live UNIX box to play with (PDP 11/24 with BSD 2.9 for an OS) and fell in love with it. Fast forward to today - using Linux Mint 20 as my daily driver, quad-core CPU, 4 GB RAM, All this lovely hardware and software, but no one'll pay me to work on it. Bittersweet, but I've got an exam in 3 hours - back to studying...

Neat!! And amazing. My first computer was a Sinclair ZX-80, with a membrane keyboard that hooked up to an old analog black-and-white TV. Advertised at the time as being the first computer for under $200, it came in at $199.95 - so the fact that this Pi 400 is about 1/2 the cost, pretty amazing. (even less if you factor in inflation). The Sinclair, BTW came with a whopping 1K (yes, you read that right, 1K of memory) and a tiny BASIC language. Funny thing was the memory looped around itself so if your program got too large, it would start overwriting itself! An optional memory expansion, I believe 16K, cost more than the computer itself. I traded up to a TRS-80 model III, quite a few more computers in the interim, now I've got a HP Z620 with dual core Xeon processors for a total of 16 cores, 32 hyperthreads, and 96 GB of RAM. Got it used on Amazon for $560. But this Pi looks like a fun machine - just might get one, for old times' sake and in a sense go back to the future, albeit on steroids from what I started with! Thanks for the overview!

I then made it so I can boot if off an external usb 3.0 ssd drive, installed openvpn, configured samba, qmmp music player, and installed qbittorrent . I dont actually type much on the pi 400 because I use vnc connected to my main computer. But its a nice little computer.. and its running cool. The extra speed it has compared to the pi 4 makes it very responsive. Thank you for your computer explanations ... !

Shame they've kept the micro HDMI ports - it would've been nice to utilise the larger form factor and change these to standard HDMI ports. Having said that, I appreciate the best way of keeping the price down is to keep as much commonality with the original SBC as possible, so can understand why.

You gave me a flashback mentioning early PC's like the Sinclair, etc being used as learning computers. When I worked at Digital Equipment Corp. in the early 1980's we had developed the GIGI VK100 as an educational graphics computer. Although a commercial failure, the graphics development team went on to create the VT2XX series graphics terminals and VAX/VMS graphics workstations and PostScript printers that were highly successful products for DEC.
