In this class we will be using the Sunfounder Raspberry Pi Pico W Keppler Kit. It will make things a lot easier if we are working on identical hardware. the link below is to amazon, and is for the identical hardware I will be using in this entire class.
amzn.to/3ubMRs1
In this introductory video, I will show you how to build your first circuit using the breadboard, and connecting it to the Pico W. We will blink an external LED from the Pico W. My goal is not to 'Show Off', but to genuinely teach you how you can do this type of work and projects on your own. Enjoy!

Hello Paul, I'm an old (72) engineer from Sweden, who has been working with hardware electronics all my life. Right now I'm following your lessons on the Arduino and I think you are a great teacher. When I saw you were going to start teaching the Pico W, I said "I'm in". I made my kids get me a Kepler Kit for Christmas. I have done my assignments but I have to get my son teach me that post-things-on-the-youtube-thing. It shouldn't be impossible if you know how.

Paul, I am constantly reminded that you are a good teacher. While running a course that includes the very basics of using a breadboard, you are also running a series that currently is teaching about manipulating images on a Raspberry Pi. And doing both with enthusiasm. That is a gift. On the topic of the Pico, it comes with two processors. Will you, at some point, illustrate how to use both? Is that convenient to do in microPython? Also, I understand that there are some little PIO processors that run independently of the main cores to do simple I/O tasks. Will you be addressing these in either this class, or perhaps, a follow on class? Thank you!
@paulmcwhorter
@paulmcwhorter Год назад
Jerald, I would get into something like that when I see the need arise. for most embedded projects I can imagine, performance is not that big of an issue. In most cases making a few measurements a minute or hour is more than enough. I have not run into projects that require very high performance on the computing side.

I have a quick suggestion that may look better. You used a long ground wire. I don't know how much bending it can take. You could run a wire from pin 38 to the blue ground bus rail. Run a wire from the short led to the ground bus. You have two shorter wires, and a straight layout. I decided to challenge myself to see if I understand GPIO pin layout. I used Pin 1 for output. GPIO0 on green label. So, I coded this: RedLed=Pin(0, Pin.OUT) and Pin 1 turned on the led.

What does the stop button do in Thonny. On the Arduino, it would run forever and you could continually make changes and upload to it. In Thonny, before you can update it, you always have to hit stop. (I learned that the hard way).

This is so cool to approach this SOS problem from Python side (I already like Pythons different approach). I did my home assignment by making one block blinking fast, then pause and other section "do'h- do'h- do'h :), little pause between cycles and it went as long as Pi Pico had power. Next day i started with lesson 3 but my Pico was empty- no did, not "dit" or "do'h"... Do we have to save our program (Arduino took it and it stayed in it's memory even when the power was lost). I tried to save with thonny this program to Pi Pico but result was the same...

Hi Paul, A couple of questions. [Note I did some basic physics a school about 60 years ago, I'm not trying to be a smart ass] There are numbers on the breadboard relating to the columns When you put the pico on the breadboard, why would you put physical pin 1 in column 2 rather than in column 1, and thus physical pin 20 was in column 21? The resistor, I think you said was to prevent the LED from burning out, does it matter if it is before or after the LED in the circuit? With the Ground connection, would it be easier to connect from physical pin 18 to the -ve rail at the top of the breadboard then connect from that to the column 38 by the resistor? The Ground pins, you choose physical pin 18, which is close to 20 your signal pin, are all the GND pins the same? does it matter which is used? Would it matter if more than 1 is connected? Thanks

So I am taking it upon myself to turn in my homework using only what has been presented and taught thus far in the lessons in hopes that it will help any beginners that have limited/no programming experience without overwhelming them with advanced solutions that have not been covered yet. :) With that being said keep the amazing solutions coming, I really enjoy seeing every ones take on the homework solutions, they are helping me learn new more efficient ways to program. Since everything (dot, dash, space between words, space between letters, space between dots and dashes) is just a multiple of the time unit (tu), it seemed like the perfect building block.
