I can’t stress how beneficial having visuals with the explanation helps with understanding this subject. Electromagnetics? Yep. Got it. Networking and communications? The wrinkles of my brain start to smooth out.

Very glad to see you back! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain (and re-re-explain!) Raspberry Pi Connect. I'd seen it on their blog and was curious about how it actually worked and its pros and cons. The article on your website is great, too. Thank you!

Technically WiFi is a layer 2 protocol (MAC addressing) and not layer 3 (IP). One's WiFi might not be on a different subnet than one's wired Ethernet like you have. Granted the Pi's Ethernet and WiFi connections are both layer 3 so the can be on same or different subnets. It is really interesting how devices really communicate when on the same subnet as determined by the IP and subnet mask.

Glad you are back. Another remote access command worth knowing about in scp - secure copy - and easy to use way to transfer files between computers. It is a good friend of ssh. Likely already installed if you have ssh installed.

Thank you for that. I have done VNC, SSH and X-windows connections to Pi's, Solaris, HP-UX and Xenix systems for many years and been self-taught. That was the most complete tutorial I've ever seen. I'm a little afraid of Pi Connect - it sounds an awful lot like a PI ecosystem and remote desktop with all the headaches and security issues of that. Having to have a PI account is eerily like Win11. I know nothing is free, and you should pay for what you use, but I think think I'm going to stick with VNC for the near future.

An excellent video and source of information, thank you so much. I agree with comments from others in that the quality and clarity of the information you provide via the visuals are the key to the transfer of knowledge. You have given me a good understanding of the background to things that I formerly just took for granted.

Excellent video as usual. The way he presents is top shelf and could not be bettered. Both the visuals and what is said are concise and straight to the point. When it comes to "Raspberry Pi Connect" I feel my hairs standing on my back. Relying on a 3rd party to connect directly to a server seems unnecessary and risky? Seems to work more like a "wallet" where you have an overview of your available machines. But what if Raspberry Pi Connect gets overloaded, changes terms of agreement, gets hacked or stops working? Isn't it better to just open VNC through the firewall / router and connect directly to the machine over the internet using a VNC client?

Also, you can host an Apache server on the pi and make a nice UI that works on the local network. That can execute bash script commands so lots of control.

Sir I was making a project of Keyword Spotting using INMP411 and ESP32. My results from model were not correct and i figured that the problem is that the audio collected during 1 loop execution is just a part of the whole word. Sir can you please guide how to modify your i2s video code for INMP411 for this usecase so that i can capture whole word before i use it for fft and mfcc transformations all in 1 loop execution Thanks

I am not sure if this is just on my Rpi but my Rpi3’s ip address seems to be always changes every time I turn it on. Only the last three digits change so it’s not a big problem but I need to always use my small monitor (7”, the one for security cams) to find the config before I can use VNC and then use my laptop from then on.
@danman32
@danman32 Месяц назад
In previous Pi OS's I've had problems with VNC when the Pi is headless (no monitor connected) especially with Python graphics. I've had to use a dummy HDMI dongle to get it to work. Did they fix that with Bookworm?
@tin2001
@tin2001 Месяц назад
Have you tried using boot options to force an HDMI mode? Not sure if it'll fix headless, but I used to have issues with Raspberry Pis not doing anything higher than 640x480 if the TV they were connected to wasn't on when they booted (basically every time the power failed).

@JeffreyGroves

WiFi does not necessarily have a separate subnet. You can have WiFi on the same subnet on the same subnet by using Wireless Access Points instead of a WiFi-enabled router.
@tin2001
@tin2001 Месяц назад
Or a better router. The wifi in a basic consumer router is still a distinct interface. It's bridged to the ethernet switch through software. Higher end routers let you do things like remove the wifi from the bridge, or run VLANs that can include whatever ports you want. Personally, I prefer to use separate access points around the house, since you can place them where wifi is needed, while the router usually has to be somewhere close to a random arbitrary legacy phone connection point like a kitchen or hallway.

Very handy this coming out at the same time we have to pay for remote VNC access :-) It's a bit juddery atm, but with just one server, even though I am London based, that's not a shock or a problem. I wonder, will it ever be fast enough for remote sound to be of any use?

I have a Raspberry Pi running OctoPrint on my Prusa MK3S 3D printer. I'm wondering if Raspberry Pi Connect would allow me connect to the Pi running Octoprint and be able to get into OctoLapse and be able to see the build plate so I can make sure the print is OK. And if the print failed, could I stop the print? If I could do this while I'm in my office 35 miles away, it would be very helpful.

Hi Bill. Always a great video, but with the greatest respect, could you please pause and take a breath in your narration. Listening is akin to reading text without any punctuation. Slow down a bit and make things a lot easier to follow. (It’s not just Bill, it seems to be a North American thing to talk at high speed without pausing for breath…)
