Clem has built a giant resin based 3D printer concept in a previous video, and today it is time to put the concept upside down! The people on the element14 community gave him a lot of advice and ideas to make his idea finally work as it should! Clem builds a second iteration of his 3D printer using daylight resins and easily obtainable parts. The new Raspberry pi 4 8 GB reduces slicing times and makes for a more responsive GUI on this experimental 3D printer! Now its time for the community to take his findings and iterate for a bright future of cheap huge 3D printers! bit.ly/2BF1vQQ

You need to remember that the further the screen is from the surface of the resin, the larger the angle of spread for the light. The reason that current LCD printers work well is that the curing resin is right at the surface of the screen, except for the thin FEP film that separates the resin from the screen. The closer you can get the screen to the resin, the sharper the print will be. I don't see how you can get the screen close enough to the resin on this type of design. If the resin touches the screen, surface tension will suck the resin to the screen and the resin will cure stuck to the screen. For top down you really need to use lasers. Why hasn't someone converted a laser printer cartridge to scan across a volume of resin? Sounds like a good experiment since a (paper) laser printer scans onto a drum. Just modify it to scan across a flat surface. I thought of this a few years ago.
@MAYERMAKES
@MAYERMAKES 4 года назад
in my design the screen is exactly 0,5mm away from the resin. thats closer than on a mars for example(glass adhesive and FEP amoutn to about 1,5mm. the resin only has a chance to stick to the screen if you let it. so level exactly not just by eye, and coat the screen with PTFE spray, to protect it in case of mishaps. We collect all inputs for future develoment here; bit.ly/2BF1vQQ you might want to add your ideas.

@@MAYERMAKES perhaps you should have an FEP layer that you push upwards into, in order to flatten the resin beyond surface tension.

What a clever idea: "..just Unfold the Cylinder of Laser Printer." To equalize the idea even further: "..just Unfold the Drum Scan of an Photo Litography Laser Drum scanner for separated CMYK Print Plates".. "U get bigger build volume than from Desktop Printers.. Theese machines having no problem engraving onto Aluminium Sheet, and probably faster resin curring times.."

Look up Xolo 3D, they do something called volumetric 3D printing that’s basically what you’re saying. They shine a two lights into a vat of resin: one creates a plane, and the other projects an image of the layer on that plane. The combined energies of the lights where they intersect is enough to cure the resin. According to them it prints insanely fast.

@@MAYERMAKES nice idea, I was thinking of something similar. Would be interesting to see if a fresnel lens would help focus the light.
@MikeysLab

If you took the screen apart to the bare lcd, remove back light, diffuser, lenses etc (like you would prepare to build a projector), and include a custom light source, through a single Fresnel lens, I think you might get better results. At the very least you could easily change light sources, since I think the back light is probably the source of the difference between the panels.

For masking, I'd try with a UV-pass filter/adhesive/film. Nice finding. I always knew there was something wrong with resin 3d printers. Powerful UV lights under those tiny LCDs are just wrong...With a UV pass filter you get the same results without the hassle of a LCD replacement. Anyway this top down looks painful. With a bottom up design you can make some holes in the plate and fix the first layers with a bolt to sustain the weight of a huge print, or some conical holes with the tip pointing toward the surface touching the resin with UV leds on top. The resin going in would harden and, given proper support, even a huge print would stick. Once ready, you would just have to break them to remove both the print and the remnants of those conical supports from the top, where they should be accessible. Also, some photopolymers (of which a few are vegetable oil based) can be bought for as low as 8$ the liter, even less when bought in metric tons.

What about using an OLED screen instead of LCD Technology? You'll not have issues with light masking because there is no mask. Since OLED uses a set of specific leds per pixel, black regions are effectively unenergized and give no light.

That's been tried before and it's a bad concept. Get rid of the water or you will NEVER get accurate prints. Instead strip a LCD screen (Not OLED! and * extra warning * not all LCD can be split this way) to the black lcd sheet only and get it working as a light filter then put a UV LED array under it. That's how it's made, they don't use the backlight of the screen anymore it's way to weak.
