Rat Rod Mini Bike Budget Build! | Vintage Briggs meets Chopper!

Ike bought a chopper mini bike frame from the mid 1970s for $20 while buying another car! Today we pair the mini bike chassis with a $20 yard sale Briggs and Stratton 5 horsepower flathead from 1973 and we have an epic rat rod vintage mini bike build! This is not a racing mini bike, nor is it an off road mini bike. This is a cruiser mini bike, designed to ride low and slow. What it lacks in performance, this mini bike makes up in style.
Thanks for Watching!

I built my first go-cart at age 12. The rear wheels and drive came from a push lawnmower. I removed the blade and installed a pulley on the shaft. It had a pretty good gear reduction. I remember those old Briggs&Stratton engines. I paid $5.00 for the engine I used on my go-cart. I made the frame out of wood. The front end and steering was the front half of a 20 inch bicycle. My next project was putting a McCulloch 47 chainsaw engine on a 26 inch bicycle. It would go 32 mph. I finally got an old Cushman Eagle motor scooter with a shift level on the gas tank. I rebuilt the engine at age 13, rings, rod bearing. It would go 52 mph. I rode it everywhere. A car pulled out in front of me and I ran into the back of it. I flew over the top of the car and ended up in a ditch, no helmet. The driver thought I was dead, but I survived. My scooter didn't. I moved on to cars. I built my first hot rod at age sixteen, a '55 Chevy. I rebuilt a '58 283 engine, new rings and bearings, full race cam, solid lifters, corvette valve springs, pop-up pistons, and installed a four speed transmission. My car was clocked by state police going 127 mph. I eventually got busted for bootlegging beer. I was hauling several cases of beer into a dry county. My cousin was the judge. He stepped down from the bench to defend me while I learned how to shoot an M16 for Uncle Sam's war in Vietnam. I eventually went to college on the GI Bill and became an electrical engineer, BSEE. I am now retired and drive slow, forget to turn off my blinker, and watch your RU-vid videos. You fellas keep up the good work.

My dad and I built a mini bike from scratch when I was young. It had a 5 hp BS engine from a cement mixer. The wheels and tires were trailer size. The frame material was electrical conduit pipe. It had a Mercury centrifugal clutch. I had to put a disc brake on it later because it was pretty fast. Fun times!

No expert here guys, but, I am 61yrs. old, and lived the 60's -70's mini-bike craze ! Think your chopper should have a twin- spring shock system mounted to the seat plate, and there by leveling the seat ! No more feeling like you are falling off the back of the bike ! A pivot point at the front of the seat plate, twin spring shocks at the rear. Plenty of photos available of your chopper frame with a level seat and sping shocks. Let me know if I am incorrect on this one guys. Very cool project for sure !
@ZippoVarga
@ZippoVarga 4 года назад
Fab a support to that strait pipe muffler. Reason? In a good situation, you'll just pull the threads out of the block. Worse case, you'll crack the exhaust port and trash the engine. I love these old simple mini bikes. Being 53, I cut my teeth on them when I was a wee lad. Great to see this old school mini bike breathing again with a vintage Briggs no less!! Cheers guys! Zip~

My very first mini bike I got about 1969 was an ARCO 5hp Tecumseh chopper with chrome fenders! Of course I bypassed the governor (used a paper clip to replace the spring!) then I knocked off every other fin on the flywheel to lighten it up (balanced? HA!) The seat was hinged on the front with shock/springs on the back. May be why yours is so slanted? Did about 45mph flat out!

Haha, when I was about 8 or 9 my mom bought me an old minibike with a 5HP Briggs and it would take like 30 pulls to get it running. One day she decided that she wanted to ride it. She got it fired up, went around the house, and the throttle stuck wide open and she sailed at full throttle into the row of bushes that we had along the one side of our house. Then she bought me a newer one with a 5 HP Tecumseh and it ran mint.

To get it running 17 years ago I pulled the coil and points out, put points cover back on and replaced the coil with a used mag from some other Briggs engine. I also replaced the oil, gas and spark plug. That is all the work I have done to it. I can go outside and start it right now on the 2nd pull. I should add that it is a 1968 engine. Briggs good.

Greetings C&C's and all the best for 2020. Love the builds and whoever is doing the production & editing of the vids . . . brilliant. I have had a rather unique project in the plans & development stage for months now which for me will be far more of a "tool of necessity" than a toy and having watching dozens of your vids looking for ideas (many of which several times over), I don't recall any "crawler" style builds. Perhaps you could lend some helpful direction particularly in the suspension department, I would truly appreciate that. Thanks in advance and on behalf of all the fraternal members of my "F.D./E.M.S." family, thank you both for continually reiterating the importance of being safe in your endeavors . . . John

You can tell the date of a Briggs by its “code”. the first two numbers are the year. the second two numbers are the month, and the third set is the day. If i had an engine with code # 6707201, it would have been made July 20th, 1967. This code was implemented in 1965, so this will work with any Briggs made after 65.
