Hi Guys, This video is all about my Rat Watch, a Seiko Advan 6106-7710 that was in a complete mess, Can it be saved?? Can it be brought back into service? or should it rest in peace.
I repaired this watch for the challenge of seeing if it would actually run, It took allot of work and mainly in the cleaning stage as it had a full cycle in the watch cleaning machine but was still very dirty so I ended up using hot soapy water in the ultrasonic on a 30 minute cycle, then dry the parts before running through the watch cleaning machine also.
What I learnt was that Seiko's are very robust and that even in this extremely poor state they will still run, and run quite well. They can stand the test of time without any service or poor maintenance yet still keep going. Proper workhorse movements. A true testament to Seiko engineering & design.
This watch would have been made in the 70s, however it is fitted with the incorrect caseback for me to date accurately.
What do you all think, a pointless exercise? or was it worth the challenge. I would love to hear some feedback from you the viewers.

The "RAT" Watch! A testament to your skills AND Seiko engineering that this could be made to run and accurately. Great work!

Your message is: never disregard a Seiko movement, even if it looks like it was dragged through a bush backwards! The action is probably retrievable even if the case isn't! Thank you very much, and well done!

All that work to get it going is there any way you could restore it!! that realy would be a challenge. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 года назад
In some ways yes. I could restore all the case and replace the crystal however the dial no. It could be re-done but it would not have the Advan motif. Finding the original bracelet would also be a challenge. I did this watch just for the challenge of seeing if it would even still run.

Thanks for posting the video. Great explanation of how the movement is running on the timegrapher and nice work with the microscope showing the wear to the entire watch. Definitely a rat watch. Seiko really could engineer and produce watches in the 70's! Also, nice work with the editing and music.

Wow , very good video . Have you ever tried to do a watch from parts ( movement from x , Dial from y, case from z ) ? .
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад
Hi, Not really. I am usually restoring the watch with the correct movement. I have enough parts to make such a watch but it is unlikely I would do this.

@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 года назад
Love the name! thanks for your comment. As for kits there is non so to speak. Ones that are out there are generally rubbish. You need good screwdrivers , one set of decent tweezers, I personally use Dumon 00 Hi Tech but they are pricey. A movement holder, rodico and some magnification. I recommend optivisors as they free up both hands and you have full vision of both eyes.

I love those rat watches, i got two Seiko ladies watches and one of them was in s similar condition, I cannot believe that with a help from RU-vidI managed to clean and successfully assemble (twice!) it and it's running fine now! I can't attach a photo here though.

I have a question. I have enough watches to wear a different one everyday for like 4 months. Half of them are automatic/mechanical. Some I don’t wear at all just collector pieces. How often and how long should I run them without the oils and grease drying up? Or is it better to not run them at all and keep them in the watch box? Also when you buy a new watch. Is there a break in period for the movement?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад
Sorry I really thought I had replied but clearly not! There is no running in time on a new watch or a serviced watch. When I am regulating them after a service I tend to leave them 24 hours before another test but this is to let the oil distribute and settle. I am not a fan of watch winders but its personal preference , I think its like jacking your car up and keeping the engine running, you will add miles and wear and tear unnecessarily. I would still suggest that all are wound at times. I cannot say when the grease & oil will dry up. could be years. It will depend on how you store them . heat, cold etc. With these Seikos they seem to last 20-30 years without a service although that is not recommended. better movements can have finer tolerances on parts meaning wear on pivots will come easily if not serviced regularly.

Hello, I have the same watch (6106c-7710). I noticed that when I opened the watch, the movement was very loose inside to the point that the whole movement is popping off and its just being held by the Crown stem when the watch is on its back side. The movement ring is present. I am at a loss, do you have any insight? Thank you.

Must be you that's buying all the Seiko's off ebay hehe I do have a very lovely gold ladies Seiko but missing its stem which I am waiting to come from parts foreign to arrive. I have some old hoary Sekonda clockwork watches to play with, all seem to run fast, the quite old Timex windup I have also is a fast fast runner gaining a minute in ten minutes. The Seiko 1986 LCD has resisted stripdown on the movement so its now to check the caps and mounted components /sigh
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад
+Ian Watson thanks Ian for your comment. I am not actually actively buying right now to give you all a chance. I also have far to many and allot here still to do. It’s the repairing that I enjoy. Fast running watches can be many things , good regulation , service, magnetism or sticking hair springs to name a few. I have a Timex that also runs fast no matter what u do

Dear Mike, I am upset with seiko automatic movement watch. The watch movement is4r36 movement. Getting 4 minutes fast in 7 days.. I found miyota and Indian make HMT auto are far better. Any suggestion. Please note timegrapher is not available here in kolkata...
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад
There will be a reason why the Seiko is gaining so much. poorly regulated, sticking hairspring, magnetized would be the main culprit. Without a timegraper it is hard to regulate effectively. There are phone apps one of which I did a video on but even they are not an ideal solution. You have to remember its not the design of the movement that makes it run fast as I would not have left Seiko like that. Something will be causing it.

yes can be saved and reconditionned , but it doenst worth , seikos are piece of shit look at the time machine, 180 degres of amplitude , and when turn the watch values change dramactically, its all fuked up Need deep recondition, i thing crap should be thorow away or maybe you want to have your time in that crappy watch.
