I’m so glad you called out the 2016 writing. As a lifelong fan, it really felt like they tried WAAAY too hard to make Ratchet into a prototypical Hollywood hero. Where here he’s more an Everyman who has an actual arc.

I played going commando before the first, ‘cause I didn’t know, and it is basically the most important game in my life. Next to Tools of Destruction and The Last Of Us.
I remember playing that game first and never being able to finish it because something was wrong with my disc and it would always freeze up on a specific cutscene near the end of the game. I went from Going Commando, never finishing it, to Up Your Arsenal and absolutely loving that game, and then realizing that there was a first game just called Ratchet and Clank and being jarred by how dated it felt compared to the other two when I went back to play it. Love the whole series. Skipped everything after Deadlocked, but Penny inspired me to check out all of the Future stuff before the next game comes out next month.
I'm very happy that she played 2016 before playing this game; she will now see how much more thought out this story is in comparison. 2016 is decent, but this game is just good. (Not to mention because Ratchet goes from a jerk to a nice guy as he grows during the story, and doesn't just start out heroic)
The fact that penny quotes A Crack In Time with "The Hypersonic Brainwave Scramblaaaaaaah!" Makes me so happy. While modern R&C isn't too good, Crack In Time was the last AMAZING one. I think it's the last game that kept the classic feel.
One thing I like about this game compared to all the sequels is how low the damage scaling is, so the wrench and your starting weapons are mostly viable for the whole game.
My favourite R&C game is A Crack in Time, but I love this one about as equally. The gameplay is fun, the environments are nice and the anti-capitalist themes subtly present in the story works together to make a great experience. It’s no wonder why they made a franchise out of the game, for better or for worse.
@@jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj454 Not weird to me. Yeah, the PS3 titles can be decisive at times. It started the future saga of the series, which felt a little safer than the original trilogy, and as for after it, they tried all sorts until Rift Apart, so things like All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault weren’t received too well as they tried to change it up a bit. A Crack in Time was the finale of the Future trilogy, and is received quite well in the community, even to this day. Movement and combat is fun, the story is compelling and you don’t need to have played previous games to enjoy it (I know from personal experience, as it was my second R&C game), the designs of characters and planets are well done and hold up well for their time. They have their flaws, as do all things, but it is a really fun game, nostalgia goggles or no. But it’s up to personal opinion at the end of the day, and this is just mine.

I'm so happy to see this play through🥰 especially with penny talking about the writing of the 2016 (🤢) version. the writing doesn't have to worry about it trying to BE funny, because it just is funny.
I haven't played it, but from what I've heard/seen of it, and the movie, which I *did* watch, I feel like they were basically trying to remake the OG game with the style of the Future series, but 1. relied way too much on borrowing/referencing stuff from the Future series, 2. missed a lot of the depth of the Future series, and 3. also cut out a lot of the fun stuff from the original game to make room for "lol memes" humour
@@Safehouze__ This doesn't make any sense, the writing of the remake was more immature than this one. Not that people can't enjoy that, but liking the OG Ratchet and Clank doesn't make you immature. Unless I've misunderstood what you mean. Personally, my issue is less with the writing and more with the AMOUNT of writing. The chatter of NPCs with every little thing you do is grating. I think even fans of the remake can agree it was too much.
Apparently the writers of the movie kept changing the the plot so often that it left insomniac, struggling to actually make the game so they ended up with the quarkas narrator device to explain the differences.
Does this mean we might see some more ps2 games? I would love to see a playthrough of Jak and Daxter! That game was my whole childhood and I would love to see you play through it and add your sense of humor
I think it's safe to say, after Rift Apart, that the 2016 game's weirdness was an isolated incident due to the movie! (Also, for the Spidey games, the comic writers only provided story ideas, the Insomniac team wrote the rest)
I think the major thing writers have to understand is that not everything has ro be super serious of joking, sometimes its just okay to talk and stuff!

Super glad to see Penny go through R&C! I HIGHLY recommend Jak and Daxter if you have fun with this game. The Jak Series goes through a lot of "Changes" in it's trilogy. The First Game is more like a classic collectathon, all about COLLECT ALL THE THINGS! Where as the second and third games are more kinda like a Fantasy Sci-fi Grand Theft auto. All super fun games to play that are still some of my favorite action platformers. Although the dialog and cutscenes in Jak 2 and 3 are mega edgy early 2000s dated, it's still great to goof on.
My dad got me a PS2 when I was a kid and I didn’t know he had it until I played Ratchet and Clank (2002) and I got hooked on it but couldn’t finish most levels until the day I found out about emulators and PCSX2 years later. That’s when I started playing R&C again more and more. I’m glad you’re playing it.
my guess as to why the vendor greets ratchet so casually is cuz ratchet does have the bomb glove as a starter weapon so he clearly bought from gadgetron at some point before the games events and thats why the vendor is so casual, thats just my thought process
This is making me wanna break out my ps3 and replay the games, too! I love Ratchet and Clank, they're fantastic, fun games. So happy that Penny is gonna playthrough the mainline games! Gonna have to stop in the next time she streams to watch the action live!
God watching that boss fight was so frustrating. I guess people aren’t used to pressing start in the middle of a boss fight anymore. I don’t blame anyone, so many games are online nowadays that pressing start doesn’t actually pause the game, but still. Also in RnC1, bomb glove the best for early to mid game

Its so tragic to me how you picked up on how much more fun this Ratchet's personality is when it is often cited that people thought he was "too mean" in R&C1 and that immediately caused them to start mushing the personality of the series.

Ratchet and Clank, I loved the game so much when i was a kid. Even though the copy I owned was scratched, and because of the scratches the game wouldn't load the final Boss, I could explore half of the homeworld in the end game, but it just kept crashing. Yes PS2 Crashing lol. Last year I played the series reboot of the series, and I feel back in love with the game.
everytime i click on one of these vids I'm like "cool a game I like" but then Im also always distracted by how cute I think she is, lol, and I neglect to actually pay attention to the video and my nostalgia.
I binged through the original trilogy again on an emulator a couple months ago, and god they're so good. And each title gets progressively better imo! :D

Why is the writing not as good in the remake? Because they try to rewrite the characters as their late counterparts. The characters in the later games are that way because of extremely gradual development and buildup. Ratchet is a mature, responsible hero and an incredible friend because he’s had the time to develop. He develops into a PHENOMENAL role model of a character and it’s a natural progression. Trying to reboot and rewrite characters like him in a late-game way just doesn’t fit since there’s no context. It just makes him seem “too perfect” right off the bat. Ratchet is a little shit in this opening game and it makes his progression all the more amazing!

I would be super into a stream series of the Jak trilogy. The latter two, particularly the second, are some of my favorite games, and they don't get nearly enough play nowadays.

Deadlocked is a main line series game, not a spinoff, going from Up Your Arsenal to Tools Of Destruction is quite literally going from game 3 to game 5. It makes no sense to not play it.
This was like the first game I EVER played on my PS2 which I got (when I was 6) in 2006, I know at that time R&C was pretty late but this was such a fun game that I was never good at. Cant wait for the ps5 game :)
Your streams of this game not only inspired me to play it for myself, I also bought a PS3 and the other games too. Now I'm playstation pilled lol. But for serious, these are some of my favourite games and I never would've discovered that without you so thank you!! It's so great seeing you play this again now, a couple years later. Even though the quality somewhat drops off as you go on, some games do other things better that the previous ones didn't. I'm so glad I played them all. The only one I haven't finished is Deadlocked and I really wanna go back to it Oh, and 2016. I'm never gonna play 2016, I will not sully my opinions on these awesome games with that nonsense. Especially not this game, it's my favourite!
I killed the Giant alien snapper using the sonic summoner helmet to summon a sand mouse that pilots a flying saucer that shoots enemies. It's like a silent version of Mr. Zurkon. I also used the Glove of Doom and the Pyrocitor.
This game and Jak and Daxter have been and still are my favorite games. The sequels for both are great too but I love the first games most. I loved watching this and I'm excited to see you play the other games!
I would LOVE for you to pay the Jak & Daxter trilogy. I played those before R&C games and they hold a special place in my heart. The first one's similar to R&C with the light humor, but the rest definitely do get edgy. I'd love to see your opinion of them
Ok I have no idea who you are but you got a playlist for the og ratchet games and jak and dexter. Color me intrigued it’s hella rare to see any good quality playthrough of these classics. You defiantly made the right choice playing the og over the remake. Not saying the remake is bad but they sucked a lot of the charm and satire that made the og so memorable out of the remake. It’s more of a movie tie in game that anything. 43:30 yes deadlocked is a sleeper hit for the series. It basically makes the tone of the series darker upping the stakes and focuses more on the combat. It’s similar in tone to the switch from jak and daxter 1 to 3 (would say it matches 2 more tone wise but the story is leaps and bounds better). It’s got arguably some of the best boss fights in the series as well
Man it's been sooooo long since I played the original that I forgot how much better it is than the new one, and just how content got cut, like Eudora was one of my favorite worlds as a kid and it's just completely gone in the remake, god what a shame

oooh! full series playthrough? hell yes!? if i may, i would definitely recommend all 4 one, and Q-force if you have extra time before rifts apart, and if you can get some friends to play, as they are multiplayer-centric games. I'd honestly love to see more people acknowledge Q-force due to the fact that its an interesting tower defense game. like, you explore a 3d space and can place towers to defend your base, but it still has exploration and collection, meaning you have to balance defending and attacking. all 4 one is definitely more linear, but its main focus is the competitive multiplayer co-op. its REALLY fun if you are playing with friends. its definitely an experience. :D (also seeing you play secret agent clank and MAYBE size matters would be awesome to see... but i doubt it would be easy to actually play them without just emulating a psp if you don't have any of the equipment. although, size matters did have a ps2 version, but I'm unsure if it got a ps3 re-release like the other ps2 games.)
I thought We Can Be Heroes (that new movie with Sharkboy and Lavagirl) was a pretty delightful slice of B-movie cheese that I'm sure kids will ADORE. Although I thought the ending was kind of lame.
I started following you in the main channel like a week ago and I really liked it, but now I've seen you have things like Psychonauts and this great game here I just love you uwu I agree with you about 2016, I mean, I liked it but it sure could take a break with the jokes, most of them are just so basic or lower versions of jokes you already saw in the original... at least it's way better than the movie XD
