So you use tangents and difference of y2 - y1 / x2 - x1 (change in volume over change in time) to find the rate of reaction at a specific point, but to find the mean/average rate of the reaction overall, you divide volume by time? And it must be the mean when dealing with the overall reaction because the rate is not constant at any point?

That's right, yes. You can also find the mean rate of Reaction for a section of the graph as well, e.g. between 3 mins and 5 mins. So you work out change in y and x for that period of time, and then do y/x

@@chemistrytutor and is it always y over x? If the time is on the y axis, is it then x over y? Or are graphs never with time on the y axis?

@@marigeo24 I've never seen the axes switch for time like that. Time could be on the y axis if Temp was on the x axis, but in that instance you'd no longer be expected to calculate rate. You'd be exploring how time for a reaction varies with temp increase
