President Droupadi Murmu joined thousands of people in celebrating as they pulled the giant chariots from the 12th-century Jagannath Temple in Puri towards the Gundicha Temple. The chariot pulling began at around 5:20 pm, following the arrival of Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalanada Saraswati and his disciples at the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. The ritual of 'Chhera Pahanra' (chariot sweeping) was then completed by Puri's titular king.
