Stray kids make very realistic songs; in K-pop, they promote fantasy and an imaginary world far from reality. Stray kids have the courage to bring up topics that are taboo and not talked about much in society. They are very important youth topics like loneliness, phobia, social pressure, side effects of obsession, insomnia, struggle, inspiration for youth, hard work to achieve goals, determination, etc. They raise awareness and ask questions of society in this matter, and this important topic that comes from them is mesmerizing, and I respect them as artists for being brave enough to bring this topic up.
I'm new to skz and just yesterday scanned the I Like You lyrics and... how is it a red flag? If a person straight up tells you they just want to be "friends with benefits" it's a green flag. A 🚩 would be if they made you believe they love you just to use you. If you fall in love with someone who doesn't love you and you're hurt, it's not the other person's fault. People need to realise K-dramas are a fantasy. One night stands and such are ok if both agree to it, we all know we don't do IT just to make babies.

It's true that a person being open about simply wanting something casual is a good thing. But the lyrics and dialog in "I like it" suggest that the relationship was never established to be something casual. It seems more like the narrator started a "committed" relationship with someone, without ever showing their true intentions. And whenever their partner voices their wish for making things official they just make excuses and change the topic. One of the lyrics literally is: [Don't ask, "What are we?"] It shows that it was never a mutual decision. It shows that the narrator wants their partner to believe they're in a relationship so that they are exclusive to them, but at the same time the narrator has the opportunity to cheat on their partner because "it was never an established relationship". That's the epidemic of toxicity and manipulation.

These friends with benefits type relationships that people talk about rarely end well, I'm not against them people can do what they want I'm just saying that from what I've seen from my friends from the outside looking in usually one or the other end up wanting more.

The thing with I Like It is that it really depends on the individual's opinion. As long as the feeling of not wanting to commit is from both sides, there is nothing wrong with it. If the narrator however would try to gaslight and force the other person to not put a label on it, then it would be 5 flags FOR SURE. But in it itself no one can say the narrator is a bad person for not wanting to commit, as long as they're open and honest about it to their potential situationship iykwim It is definitely a total vibe though, regardless of the lyrics, and one of my favourites from ATE
@@syris0325 i agree with you, and i like the way changbin put it. when i initially read the lyrics, the first thing that came to mind was the excitement of the 'talking stage' before an actual relationship forms, and how fun and easy-going it is. so i like how changbin puts emphasis on that, because the flirty and playful vibe before you really commit is definitely something i've experienced and appreciated before. i imagine people who don't have much experience flirting and chatting people up wouldn't find it relatable at all (no offense jeongin lol
If you watched the whole stayweek interview I think when they talk about the album in detail and discuss this song. Han specifically states that they wanted to do something different and write another song but form "the villains perspective." But he was also very hard on the fact none of the member and including himself can relate, and also called out some ppl in the fandom for being able to relate to this song😭
I really like how the music videos in "Venom" and "Red Lights" complement the narratives of the songs. In "Venom", the members are always putting each other in situations that risk their lives. At one point, they even reference the work "Rest Energy" by Marina Abramovic and Ulay, which is a performance piece where one person holds a bow and arrow pointing at the other's heart; the piece is about love and trust, about trusting your life in the one you love most. At the end of the music video, Felix and Seungmin have the opportunity to leave after finding the exit door of that mysterious place, but they decide to stay; so even though they are aware of the danger, they stay of their own free will. "Red Lights" uses the BDSM theme not only to further highlight the sexy side of the song, but also to talk about this dependence that they cannot free themselves from. As in "Venom", they know that the relationship is not healthy, but they continue with it because they can find some kind of pleasure in it, even if it is just sexual.
The fact that Red Lights is a 4 red flags, and the 'relationship' in the song is actually a metaphor for being a workaholic.... That's some good songwriting
This is I know not meant to be taken too seriously but it must be pointed out that songs like Venom and Red Lights can definitely be interpreted as a toxic relationship but not with another person but with the k-pop industry and the drive of the work itself. The reality is that k-pop idols have experienced a much different sort of life than those outside of that world. Most idols were discouraged or even banned from even dating in their contracts. As they get older more idols are taking more control of their own lives. We know nothing about Stray Kids personal lives and any relationships they may have. We don't know what any of the members sexuality is and it's none of our business but we do know that male idols are supposed to always be desirable to female fans which could create more toxicity if any members were gay or bisexual. I am not going to lie, I have crushed on all of them myself but I also see how Stays can be really toxic. So it's not surprising that toxic themes chop up in SKZ songs as they experience a ton of toxicity from outside sources.

I never considered Any to be a love song, from what i remeber the lyrics talked about not knowing what you want to do in life, having too many choices and being overwhelmed by how much you can do, and then being conflicted by what you want to do. I personally related to that song from that perspective as a person that has so much they want to do they end up doing nothing at all because of fear. It's intresting how different people view a song, great video !
Good points, but I think many of the things on this list don't actually blatantly state "relationship." I know Chan likes to have songs with themes about the creative workflow and "toxic" things that can happen within working too hard (Being addicted to an occupation you have and wanting to escape it).

this was a really funny video shhs. also ngl the toxicity somewhat makes the songs more relatable, it's what i like about music, you can express thoughts and feelings that you may have in a way that makes them into art. with the don't let me love you. it reminds me of myself quite a bit. that sort of low self-esteem turned into this sort of thorny shell that's like "don't come close or i'll hurt you and you'll regret it because i'm so much worse than you think" a bit like Elsa from frozen thinking she's worse than she really is, and it turns out her own self-loathing was the problem. but yeah, I've been in that mindset, of believing you're that bad, believing you're hurting those around you unintentionally, and it's not a good one to be in but it's kind of real? you sort of had the interpretation of the song as in, this guy's blaming the other person for his toxic behaviour, which is true but i dont think that's the entire depth of the song tbh, like in a way yes, but also from the perspective of that person, you really think you're doing the other person a favour by warning them that you're just not as great as they see you, especially if we put it in the fan vs idol parasocial-ness of it all, some people see them as these guys that can do no wrong and stuff, and it's just like when someone has this idea of you as being better than you are, it's kind of uncomfortable? because you know you'll hurt them by disappointing them in the end, which is hard, so you try to break that illusion straight away like, don't love me because I'm actually a lot worse than i seem. like the lyrics " I know how this is going to end, ideals are an illusion, reality is cruel, there is no such thing as perfect" and the other person looking at him with "gentle eyes" that left him "scarred" as in like when faced with people who see you in such a positive way and not being able to handle it and deal with it, because you feel like you might not deserve it, or feel unable to accept someone's love in fear you'll hurt them and stuff like that. idk this is a waffle. anyway the song is cool, and kind of deep, that's what I like about it. Like the narrator may be in the wrong for trying to push the other person away but like it's an honest feeling.
I actually really like that their songs aren't often about love in a romantic way or such. It's way more interesting to me, being kind of bored of the topic... makes music more interesting to me‼️🙌
Here's my unpopular opinion about I Like It: While the narrator could be a player, he could also be someone who's been hurt in love before and doesn't want to get hurt again. They found a person they like and enjoy time with but they don't want to get broken again. Here's my reason: Assuming that the narrator of this song is sincere about these lyrics, he simply could be someone who is afraid of commitment and the possibility of being hurt that comes with a deeper relationship with someone. The lines that stuck out to me the most are: 1. I love that I like you, but I don't wanna love. 2. There will be fewer scars this way. 3. Truth is always too deep Some lines that makes me think that it's not written by a player is: 1. Don't wanna end this game, hope it goes for **eternity** 2. Let's not go official, we can keep the **"you and me"** Here it sounds like the narrator wants to be with this person forever and doesn't want anyone to come between them (aka they'll only like each other and none else). However they don't want to commit and deal with the burden and seriousness that comes with a serious relationship. Is it a red flag? Yes. But is it a player's anthem? My answer would be no.
I see this perspective too. The narrator wants the honeymoon phase to last a little longer, enjoying things now and taking time instead of rushing into it. I think the message is straight forward and honest.

Can't say i agree with a lot of the interpretations as i mostly read them as being about rship with oneself, societal expectations or rships in general, not specifically romantic ones. I honestly feel a bit like Changbin in those clips re "I like it" (where his perspective OP sadly cut from the video). The prevalent talking point in the fandom about the song is its supposed toxicity, but people - different relationship formats can work for different people! The heteronormative (not just re sexual orientation) romantic+sexual+exclusive+closed+committed rship model is just that, one possible model. The thing that matters is that the rship is based on mutual respect and consent. And the lyrics indicate possible disagreements, but not a lack of these though. It's funny bc like on one hand in our generation there has been increasingly conversions about rship anarchy, poly, open, casual rship models etc, but on the other hand the always, always prevalent need to fulfill the most conventional expectations. I personally WANT to get back into dating, but (and i should add i'm a woman. No, wanting the most conventional rship model is not a characteristic of a woman) this is the real toxicity here, the "one size fits all" belief which scares me.
Agree but I do love their songs and I loved Seungmin's harmonized version of "I Like It". The only one that was a bit much for me was Han's Miserable -10 red flags for the protagonist and subject - total dysfunction - you're thinking of someone else but I would rather die than give you up. Yeah, there are relationships like that which end up on the news. Kinda like that one Lauryn Hill song but way darker.

"A bit much for me" is just how I relate to the energy or vibe. I play all their songs at least 10 times when it first drops So I listened before I read the lyrics, so IDK, it was just the energy Miserable (You and Me) tells the story of a dysfunctional relationship 1 person wants to be with someone else, the protagonist doesn't want to let them go even though they know about it, They have constant arguments about it, but for some reason they stay together. *"Who's in your head right now, someone other than me" "If I have to let go now, I'd rather be dead, baby The pointless argument ends yet again with a goodbyе If this is the last of us, I might just die"*

The boys take inspiration from a lot of things. That doesnt necessarily mean that they're writing about themselves - just like how toxic people can write sweet songs. It shouldnt be a judge of character unless we truly know who they are - which we don't. Songs are often stories that dont always reflect on who you are at that given moment or even at all. People in happy relationships an write the saddest songs, and vice versa. For all we know, they just watch a lot of television that has these themes and are inspired to write about it. They could also be switching persepectives from past experiences. Point is, we dont know the whole story. And what one person may view as toxic can be iffy to another person. For example, "Don't Want to Admit" is something i personally see as a rather typical breakup song. There's blame made out of hurt, there's a want it back, not wanting to give up, missing the other person, etc. It's a matter of perspective as well as what translation you're reading - someone could have easily gotten a different translation of "Don't Want to Admit". I dont analyze all their lyrics, nor have i listened to all their songs, but seeing as its not their whole catalogue that's toxic and theres several songs that are genuine love songs (ie "I Like You", "Sorry, I like you", more i cant currently think of or hadn't heard yet) Ps. None of this was written to take this video seriously, I'm just pointing out that - yes, some of these are in no doubt, no wiggle room, for being toxic (eg Venom), but some can easily be up for debate by perspective Edit: The songs can also have double meanings, too. Same. I’m British and don’t know Korean. I try to watch a MV that has english subtitles, not that’ll I’ll remember the translation when listening to it without subs. Some MV’s you can get the jist what the songs about, sometimes. I’m a relatively new Stay too, there’s so many songs I’ve still not heard... including some that’s in this video. Their music catalogue is huge.

I think Venom is just as bad as Red Lights, perhaps even worse. To me the protagonist of venom has gone through all the stuff of Red Lights, has finally found an out and just... refuses. Being stuck in a toxic relationship is one thing, but being self aware about it all, having the option to leave, but just going like "Ok, Fun! Let's do it all over again!" I'd say that's 5 red flags.
i love these types of songs because love is so complicated in the world and not everything is lovey dovey, makes skz more relatable to many people who have a harder time with love.

thank you for the analysis, it was a fun ride. Did you interpret them from the original lyrics or from translations? As a lyric excercise I am trying to translate or do bilingual version of pop songs. Then I am remmebed how some details and ambiguos words and cultural context are hard to do a direct translation without loss of meaning. As a very low on the romantic perception person, I dont remmeber any love song, from top of my head, that dosent looks messy or too idealistic. as a video sugestion : the opposite concept green or yellow flags songs? Soyeon from g idle said ,in a making off video , that she uses a few people as inspiration for each love song
I don't know Korean, so I interperted the songs through translations. I used multiple different sources and compared them to get a more comprehensive understanding of the lyrics. Sometimes, the lyrics came straight from a Stray Kids music video if that particular song had one. Others, I included based on subtext. On top of that, I connected songs together through their similar themes. All together, it makes up an analysis that is by it's very nature subjective. It's not necessarily "correct" but more for comedic purposes, but plenty people do the same to create narrative arcs through albums that might not have been the artist's intention. I think I would compare it most closely with critical literary analysis.
I clicked on the video without expecting much, but I was surprised by the in-depth review. I really enjoyed how you narrated each song’s story. I agree on how skz's love songs don’t fit the typical way of portraying it by other artists. When you were talking about chill it kind of saved me from a relationship that I was in while watching this I got too emotionally attached to someone who would make fun of my best friends with his brother and I I wanted to end the relationship but I was stuck because I was too emotionally attached and afraid of change but during that part I kind of realised what was happening to me and we ended the relationship and I'm now with someone who is right for me I honestly just want to thank you for that
I'm a new stay and the moment I heard and read the lyrics of 'I like it', I was like "This song is literally the Situationship anthem." and turns out that I'm not the only one XD but I can't deny the fact that the song is a bop and one of my fav track on the album.
This whole video mostly made me realize that.....I interpret way more of their songs to be about friendship and falling out between friends than romantic partners lol like there's some obvious romantic ones like On Track or Red Lights or Venom, but for me Any is about ambition not love and I've always interpreted I Hate to Admit (edit: and Deep End) as falling out with a friend
Also, i feel like i want to comment on this even though you mentioned in the beggining that you did streach the word love to all it's meanings. Love doesn't have to be romantic, it can be familial(idk if that's the right word) or platonic. It's not always romantic or sexual partners. Most of these love songs like B me, i hate to admit or deep end i related to because of a past friendship that ended badly and caused me a lot of hurt. Friendship breakups can hurt just as much as any other breakup, so i think it's good to consider that some love songs can be about friends as well.
Ngl for the most part I felt like it have several different interpretation, and most of the quote unquote "love" song doesn't seem to mean it's love for a person or human being ngl, it's more like a toxic feelings towards their job/work relationship (for songs like venom or even red light) That's just my personal interpretation tho lol
I had no idea “any” or “venom” was a love song, I agree with most of the video and all, but I think they make theses songs cuz that’s how shit is in reality, especially with “I like it” that’s literally every relationship in the west these days, they make songs that describe society and how people be acting in relationships and especially the toxic ones.
I really like this video I must say. You definitely pointed out some things I didn't notice in a few of the songs. But I have to disagree with "B Me", "Any" and "Deep End". I believe "B Me" is about leaving a toxic and controlling relationship so that they can finally be themselves. I thought it was about the protagonist at first lying to themselves that their relationship is perfect despite the partner being so controlling and manipulative to them, but then snap back to reality and realise how toxic their relationship actually is and gains the courage to leave. This doesn't only apply to romantic relationships but also with friends, family, etc. But maybe both the protagonist and the partner were both in the wrong but from what I'm getting, the protagonist is the victim of the toxic relationship and especially knowing that some people in toxic relationships just pretend that their partner is perfect even though it's obvious that their partner is toxic, so the song is a success story of someone no longer falling for the tricks of both the partner and themselves and leaving the toxicity behind. "Any" I believe is about someone being unsure about their own happiness and not knowing what they truly want in life (something I can relate to a lot). I don't really understand how "Deep End" has that many red flags. I interpret the lyrics as the partner suddenly ghosting the singer without him knowing why and the singer falls into deep depression because of the break up to the point where he's losing the will to live because of how lonely he feels. Knowing how bad ghosting can affect people's mental health, I don't see how the singer is the red flag.
i find that the songs written by Jisung and another member (i forgot 😖), are like “i would die for you”, and then songs written by Chan, Hyunjin, and Changbin are literally sex/situationships 💀 (love it tho, they get that life)
as a long-time skz fan who didn't discover i was aromantic until i was 22 (literally this year) i can finally say i understand why i love skz's portrayal of love in their music. it sucks when you don't understand your feelings and you tear down the people around you, whether intentionally or not. i love that for skz, when they talk about it, romance isn't always sunshine and rainbows. it can be blatantly toxic but usually it's down to a narrator who can't figure out their feelings. it seems much closer to someone like me, whose idea of love has been so warped literally my entire life so far, can relate to. navigating romance is far from easy for everyone and it's hard to find good portrayals of that in music

Such an interesting topic I`ve never thought about Edit: What I`ve noticed is that i barely listen to most songs that are mentioned here because i don`t really like them or really vibe with them like for example Chill, Collision, Deep End, Don`t let me love you, B Me, I like it, Any or Happy. They play both sides of the team, the love triangle into Pythagoras theorem. They play hard to get but vulnerable and complex. They are all about the hook to get the fandom to follow. Parasocial interactions where it’s a one sided relationship the whole K-pop industry is based on it and it’s brain washing. Their songs have the ability to cult status of worship not asking the individual to love themselves but to abandon their own self respect and boundaries and give in to addiction in serotonin levels that their group provides with a tormented twist. Not noble emotions at all, transitional ones like jealousy that drives some unhinged behavior to do some of the nasty things that some have done recently in the Korean media to their beloved rivals group in defamation and slander even death threats. The modern world with all its flaws and information available is just as manipulative as it has been over time to the vulnerable. There’s being a teen and having fun going to concerts and loving music for the positive changes it has made to society. And there is being a slave to something that’s not healthy. Red Flags 🚩 🎉😢

i think the love thing is interesting because they have no issue talking about more complicated topics (e.g phobias) but also i think it important to consider they are only in their mid-twentys and spent most of their lives being idols, also a lot of people learn about relationships through out secondary school which they didnt attend.
Songs like Ex and Red Lights make me wonder about Chan... like bro are you good 😭I know Red Lights was written about his relationship with his work rather than a person but that doesn't make it any better or worse
Maybe um biased but growing up in Asian country(Taiwan), people love extremely painful romance pop ballad so i thought the lyrics arent that exceptionally toxic. But i do see your points of some songs fitting the toxic boyfriend vibe. However Red Light isnt just toxic, its so clearly BDSM. So its also a kinky issue, which those who arent into bdsm may find too toxic. Taste too...and interestingly, if u read the lyric the singers are on the masochistic(receiving) end, which is against the dominate toxic boyfriend trope.
i think one of the things i love most about them is that they don't really focus on romantic love, but they definitely have love songs, meaning friendship and companionship romance is everywhere and i just like to enjoy other concepts
Ex is one of my all times favorites. All the toxic and mean songs are bops, don't know why. Personally I have a healthy relationship and not that much drama in my life, but I love reading angst and tearjerkers. When I asked my husband why did he think I did that, he said that because I am an artist (I'm a designer and painter), I look for emotions, complex emotions and raw emotions I don't have in my regular life. It makes sense to me. And they are artists, so maybe it is the same.

For me Untitled is a 4 or 5 red flag. Wanting for the other person to end the relentionship becasue you could not do it even though you knew it was over. Also the line "I cannot love you for any reason whatsoever"... Like damn and if the person i was with end up wondering if they even loved me or they were just lonley like... just no.
this is so good, all the ones u said i remember being like "uhm, sir, what?!" even if i didn't know the lyrics translated yet. the only sing that i (so far) see as an innocent love sing is my favorite song of the 5-star ablum; youtiful.
While I can watch this objectively and truly agree with you on each of these songs and their ratings... I almost lost my shit when you mentioned collision, but sat back down when you acknowledged it as one of the best tracks on 5-Star because I, too, am a collision defender. :))
