@@nikot.9920 Be careful, piranhas and/or devilfishes can be used to rush up and move block the knights, delaying you from making combat and using an area of the game you are better than the Tau at (melee). In mont'ka the devilfish gets a pregame move, and they can move another 12" and advance getting into the gaps between ruins near your deployment zone significantly reducing any forward movement for the knights. However to be fair most lists will deploy back.

I remember when the T'au were first released, how broken they were, and how too many players would just use the cheesy strat of firing, then using the Devilfish to block return fire by moving it in front of the unit that they wanted to shield.

were tau broken just because of "fish of fury" that both eldar could also use?
@Xhumed
@Xhumed Год назад
@@555tork not just because of that, it was also the insane ranged damage they could put out. The Necrons were similarly unbalanced when they first came out, back when their schtick was "cleanse all life from the galaxy" and less "Tomb Kings... In SPAAAACE!" The Resurrection Protocols went off more frequently/reliably, so you could see models you downed get back up. This apparently got somewhat negated by giving them an auto-lose scenario if you managed to destroy 60% of their army in a later edition, but I had stopped playing and keeping track of 40k long before that point, in part due to moving hemispheres to Australia. GW have always had a problem balancing new rules for factions, as we saw in 9th.

I was literally the first member of public to own T'au, being dumb enough to be standing first in line outside GWHQ when they released the big release box. 3rd ed T'au were absurd. Stealth suits were hyper-broken and damn near impossible to kill while churning out hard hits in your own turns. The number of times when I'd simply wipe out my opponent with nothing but a fairly plain firing line setup was insane.

There are no rules for it in the codex but don't let that stop you! It's your plastic toys, you can do with them what you want. Surprised to not see Darkstrider not pop up once, seems his +1 to wound would be a big buff on a crisis suit unit.
@facelesscleric2744
@facelesscleric2744 Год назад
Probably just a diluted result since he is only available in Tau Sept and FSE is also very popular, plus he has to compete with Ethereals and Commanders.
@TheScruffy94
@TheScruffy94 Год назад
The main reason you don’t see it is he competes with Longstrike, Ethereal, Two commanders in Tau Sept. Another issue is his +1 to wound is kinda hard to use, darkstrider himself has to be able to see the enemy unit you want to target and the friendly unit you want to buff in the command phase. As a foot slogging character it’s hard for him to keep up with the 18inch move the crisis unit is potentially taking.
@filipivanovic8135

The main problem with darkstrider is his movement sadly, I’ve tried using him as he’s awesome fluff wise, but he just can’t keep up

Nice analysis. One comment would be include Farsight in the crisis commander numbers, he pretty much has the same role as a crisis commander. I play tau sept and have a crisis commander with an Onager gauntlet which provides a very similar role to Farsight. I think with the increase cost of crisis suits the crisis commander has taken a small hit which I think pushes it down to 2nd place in the commander list. Thanks for taking the time to compile this list. Riptides being so high is a knee jerk reaction to bombers being nerfed and crisis suit point increase means most people are wary of having more than a single large unit. People have flocked to an early game jump-shoot-jump list, however I think other list types will arise as time progresses. I still think Riptides will be seen, but less of the triple riptide lists will.

No real surprises here when I compare to the local players who care about tourney play at all. Which is getting to be a pretty small community, 9th edition and GW BS with 3P content creators have combined to see almost half that population move on. Really helped Battletech a lot, and the old grognard group I play RT/2nd with has gained some new blood as well. Still have one local Tau guy who continues to champion using tidewall shieldlines in place of Devilfish, and he's even got the other two Tau players experimenting with them when he's around to loan one out. They remain surprising effective at the local level, and I think he'd honestly be winning a lot more if he'd tone down the rest of the odd experimental stuff a bit. I'm sold on the flying trenches being viable. Not so much on the sniper drones and skyrays and the light skimmers - Barracudas? Piranhas? Some kind of fish I can't be bothered to look up... :)
@markhohenbrink5230
@markhohenbrink5230 Год назад
Its kind of interesting with when you look at the tidewall gunrig. Its just a bigger broadside shot but the reason you take it is the rule when it dies it becomes difficult terrain on the board. Plop that down with player placed terrain and you effectively shut down a major movement lane for the enemy player trying to hit your gunline. For the other tech pieces (Sniper Drones, Skyrays, and Tetras) are mainly used for cheap and effective markerlights. Sniper Drones are extras of the Firesight Marksman who can output a lot of markerlights safely compared to pathfinders. Skyrays have decent markerlights and its just a Skyray, so you want the enemy to shoot it because that wastes shots going into the good units. Same thing for the Tetras, but sadly no one takes piranhas because they are just worse space marine attack bikes.

Crisis Suits should get the first weapon option reduced by 5 points, but increase the second take of the same option increased by 5-10 points. They are already well over costed imo, and other factions have free wargear while Crisis suits pay premiums on theirs.

I adore my Stormsurge model and I don't care if it isn't meta. It has insane firepower, so provided you can get it to fire at least once it will have served a purpose. Try bringing it in strategic reserves turn 2, that way you have a guarantee that it will be alive turn 1. Or use Exemplar of Kauyon to bait your opponent and then redeploy it into strategic reserves. It is also pretty hard to kill, just make sure you have drones nearby for saviour protocols.

@rathstar
@rathstar Год назад
If ignores "any and all" so he ignores enemy smoke, ad mech bikes and large walkers -1 to hit, flyer -1 to hit, dense cover if its a negative to hit modifier he ignores it. That why either farsight or a crisis commander is very popular. The only thing he doesn't ignore is the indirect fire penalty as that a ballistic skill modifier not a to hit modifier.

I'm surprised Longstrike didn't make it on the list, seems worth the points to have an even more reliable Hammerhead and buff a 2nd you might have (or a crisis squad)
@rathstar
@rathstar Год назад
He's similar to Farsight in that he's locked to a specific sept, plus Hammerheads, while popular, are not auto takes. I would expect most, if not all, Tau sept lists took Longstrike, however as we have 3 top septs that are used competitively (Farsight, Tau & Bork'an) he's limited that he can only go in one of those. If playing Tau sept I would say he's close to an auto include.

The Stormsurge has to compete against the Hammerhead and Riptide for damage output. Since it can't take cover and has almost no mobility it makes it far less efficient. You can get a Hammerhead AND a Riptide on the table for roughly the same points as one 'Surge, with that you can cover more ground and get a more reliable damage output.

No AoC has helped Fire Warriors out so much, it's good to see them getting play because they are iconic. I've said this before, but Broadsides really need to get Core back, it's such a simple change that would balance them against Riptides and Hammerheads internally. A Etheral or Commander sitting to buff a battery of Broadsides on the backline is thematic and would not be overpowered on the table.

It's always kind of baffled me that no one ever takes tactical drone squads. They're cheap, extremely mobile and can deepstrike. They're only 2 points more expensive than fire warriors per model and can either be taken as small distraction/move-block markerlight squads, or gundrone squads that can are putting out 4 shots at 24" at S5 for 2.5pts per shot(literally the cheapest per shot ratio in the game!) They are more durable than fire warriors at T4 and the same 4+ save. They're only drawbacks are low leadership and 5+BS(which can be modified to a 3+ with marketlights +1 to hit and a drone controller's +1BS) a full squad is 48(!) shots you can mantastrike where you need them. There's also the option to load them up on big Crisis squads to expand their firepower and remove some of their disadvantages(they share Ld and markerlights) but I never seen that done either. I don't get it.

The mathematically best unit in the Tau codex against the widest range of targets is Vespid Stingwings. People just don't have the models and aren't interested in failcast if they can't find the metal ones. And the common conversions and counts-as are illegal in tournaments. So your whole video is based on a false premise.
@rathstar
@rathstar Год назад
Like any analysis its useful as a start. You point is very valid and is the type of fact that people should bear in mind when using this information. I agree with you that vespid are very good, not sure I would rank them as the best when you consider their durability, its the reason I'm increasing my GW tournament compliant models from 8 to 2 units of 9. The failcast models are god awful, both the sculpt and failcast.
@Vinterloft
@Vinterloft Год назад
@@rathstar They don't really need durability, they always make twice their points back. Drop them in to support XV25 near to any TEQ or MEQ, blast it, then charge it. (If one's Tau brain allows them to make such a challenging maneuver) and every time you get value. Every time. If they keep going that's a bonus, and it happens more often than you'd think. I use 2 squads of 7 and one squad of 6 in every game. Sometimes 2x10.
