Questions:
1. Tag folks.
2. How do you know you’ve just finished a good book? Is it a thinking or a feeling response?
3. When you begin to form your review/rating - what is the first question you ask yourself?
4. Do you do star ratings? Why? Why not?
a. If YES
i. Explain your star rating system - what does a good book get in your rating system?
ii. Is your star rating consistent? ie. are all your 5 star books better than all your 4 star books?
b. If NO
i. What language do you use to convey the quality of a book in your reviews?
ii. Does this form an informal rating or ranking?
5. Do you believe every book has its perfect reader? Does this contradict the idea that a book can be “bad”?
6. What book that you hated have you recommended?
7. What makes a book good, bad or great by your evaluation?
8. When evaluating the quality of a book do you have specific criteria or aspects of the book, such as character development, that you consider? Does this change if you are writing an in-depth review vs. just thinking about the book for enjoyment?
9. Do you consider star ratings or avg. ratings when choosing books to read/add to your TBR?
10. Who on BookTube does reliable and interesting reviews of books that you know you can use to decide if a book is for you or not. What makes their reviews so good?
11. Does that/those booktuber(s) use different language than you to evaluate and review the overall quality of a book?

Some books may not be considered great literature, but they are good for entertainment. I would give Edgar Rice Burroughs’ books 4 of 5 stars for their entertainment value even though they aren’t great books. Tarzan and John Carter of Mars have been loved for years by many people even though those books don’t have a lot of depth like C. S. Lewis’ or Tolkien’s stories. They do offer some enjoyable reading for many people. :)

Some very thoughtful comments about reviewing and rating. It is very complicated and very personal, and it was good to hear you question the premise of the questions. I would only disagree with one answer: I think it's possible to recommend a book that I've hated, depending on the person to whom I'm giving the recommendation. I hate Wuthering Heights because everyone is so cruel to one another, but I know that many people love it, so I would recommend it to someone who loves gothic tales. I hate Catcher in the Rye and especially the selfish Holden Caulfield, but I know that many young people identify with this book, so I would recommend it to a young person who is looking for a book about growing up. The hard part would be keeping my opinions to myself, to let the reader make their own judgments. :) P.S. YA author John Green (The Fault in our Stars, Turtles All the way Down) has thoughtful reflections on "star" ratings vs reviews in his book of essays The Anthropocene Reviewed.

I thought the same about Wuthering Heights, but I still don’t know if I would actually recommend it to someone unless I knew from their specific reading tastes that they might enjoy it. Even then, it’s tough to predict what someone might like.
