In this video, I am out at a favourite spot by the river to try another ration pack from around the world - this time a Chinese PLA Military one, menu 18.
I love a ration pack, always have and find them exciting to open and see what’s inside - this ration pack didn’t disappoint, especially as I wasn’t able to read the Chinese information on the outer packaging.
Sadly, the ration heaters included didn’t work, but this was not surprising as the ration pack was several years out of date. In my experience, military ration packs have a very long shelf life - often years longer than the specified date, however, I don’t advise anyone to eat out of date food, this was a choice I made and I accepted the risk.

If that had been me, one of the meals would have been pork fried rice and the other rice pudding and I wouldn't have known until I mixed them and eaten some. I would then have grabbed the lemon drink, only to discover, after a big swig, that it was lemon scented hand sanitizer. You are much braver than I am, Simon. Love your videos. That pack-raft looks like such fun. Thank you for what you do.

Simon always delivers - please keep this mini ration pack series going - really interesting how different the food and motivation/comforts elements are. As they say, an army marches on it stomach - maybe there'll end up being a correlation between the ration pack offerings and the success of each country's army.

As a Chinese, it's interesting to see you guess what the words on the packaging mean. The '18' means model of 2018 , '餐谱3' means menu number three, and 690 grams.

Another fantastic vid Simon on the MRE theme. I had to rewatch with Google Translate to see what they were. Turns out 1st line is 'M9 food', next is 'Net content specification 690G', next is '18 Lu Qin self heating food', next line it kept changing what it was, next is 'Recipe 3' and lastly is 'Century Fusion (Beijing) Technology Development Co, Ltd'. After opening spoon/napkin the packet said 'crispy cucumber'. Top pouch in the mess tin was 'Curry chicken 3 rice' and the 1st pouch you opened when boiled was 'Beef fried rice'. You must have been well full after 2 rice portions but think of the energy you get then for paddling. Looking forward to the next vid, especially MRE one.

Brave of you Simon, to try that one. I think you’re right about it being two meals! Thanks for trying it for us! You can’t beat those little BCB stoves. I always carry one in my edc with 3 gel packs. Just in case! In fact I have one in my ‘get me out of trouble’ kit that lives in my pick up. 🤭.

I think it's possible that the 'lemon water' was actually an electrolyte drink. That could be why there wasn't two. The electrolyte powder drinks I have say only one per day.

The calories you got from the ration pack was likely enough to get you back home, my friend. That looked like a lot of carbs, honestly, but an army runs on its stomach. Nice review. However this ration seems to be a civil market reproduction of military counterparts by a private owned company. It should be Type 09 (09单兵自热食品) with green wrap.

Good video Simon. That meal looks very hearty. Not the nice snacks as with some other ration packs but still looks big and nice. Be interesting to figure out if it is for one day or one meal. A lot for one meal but not a lot for one day. Shame no coffee ☕ 🇬🇧 🇨🇳 🇳🇿

Love Chinese food, especially in Australia lol. Thanks for the review. I’m running behind in my channel watching. OK so for interest I used my translate app and got mixed results. Chicken curry rice, green beans and beef fried rice, cucumbers, apparently some melon somewhere. Then a stern direction to "not eat the current product in a bag, if you see it after making a solid drink, please drink it with fetal heart". So, perhaps best Simon didn't read the packages first :-S

Or an average Friday night home via the pub and several pints. Jokes aside, I can't fault that for a days ration. I know from my encounters with Chinese tourists in Singapore, that they have rice and pork at breakfast. The hotel had a specific area for guests who preferred this menu. I queued up myself and asked the Indian fellow who spoke English (I must have looked like Deholm Elliot in "last crusade film) to give me whatever the lady in front of me ordered. I was given noodles (slightly sweet), rice (fried) pork and a helping of sweetcorn and onion (?) It was enjoyable- the feeling afterwards was akin to eating a heavily toppinged cold pizza after "the night before." Sorry I've lost my datum again.

Dude, It's written on the package. 😅it's overdue anyway... The shelf life is 24 months. but it doesn't look like it's spoiled, because it also says "Do not eat if package is swollen ." so..you're lucky.

I am Chinese and I can tell you that the 2018/05/15 behind it refers to the production date. I checked and found that the shelf life of this food is 24 months and it has expired. I hope you will have no health problems after eating it, LOL.😅😅😅

Yeah, it's two meals. Certain armies have a basic single ration pack but provide supplements separately. Like drinks and also additional proteins often in small tins. Fish, processed meat etc. So it's sometimes difficult to tell what a full 24 hour supply contains.

Hello Simon, this self-heating food is not the most delicious in the People's Liberation Army, there is a single soldier self-heating food, that inside the meal is more, there are chewing gum chocolate. And the one you're eating was made in 2016, and it says two years, and it's five years past its expiration date, so his heating pack failed. I admire your courage. Good luck with your channel.

The M9 rations are commercial meals. The quality isn't as good as the new Type 17 rations. The fried noodles and freeze dried soup blocks in those are great if a bit oily and lacking in variety.

I like the series but wish you had given taste descriptions of each individual package as you opened them instead of just mixing and consuming. I feel a little cheated of my vicarious meal.
