What Rats can teach us about being human. Rats contain morality, their stress response is controlled by motherly love, they are tickly and giggly, and lastly they bond better with those they are in synch with.

Through speech, music, literature and movies...what we've seen, heard, felt...anger, joy and sorrow...these are the things I will pass on. That's what I live for. We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light.We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with. The human race will probably come to an end some time, and new species may rule over this planet. Earth may not be forever, but we still have the responsibility to leave what traces of life we can. I've thought like this for a while. It occurred to me while walking in Hermanus. I was walking along the coast, tripping on psylocibin, and feeling that I was being watched by little people. This is because South Africa is famous for it's diversity of humanoid creatures, such as Homo Naledi. South Africa has the most diverse collection of anthropomorphic fossils. I then realized that the "little people" watching me were actually just Dassies, little rat-like creatures that are most closely related to elephants. The fact that an Elephant and a Dassie can be so closely related made me think about how all mammals have the same bone sets and topology, essentially being stretched and shrunken versions of each other, and if a human was shrunk to that size they would probably be as intelligent as a rodent and walk on all fours, so Dassies are basically little people. It's all completely meaningless semantics of course, but it's just the realization of interconnectedness and the lack of separation between human made categories.

Just playing devil’s advocate but how do you know the rats let the mice win fights from time to time because of morality and not just because if they keep beating the mouse it won’t fight anymore?
@partlyblue
@partlyblue День назад
Solid question, and I can't say I know how they got to that statement per se. Armchair rationalizing it though, I'd posit that morality can be reduced to a similar positive feedback loop. That in the simplest form of morality people act morally as there's incentive to do so, either directly or indirectly, delayed or near instant. A more abstracted view of morality is "doing the right thing" which in turn-- and I can't say I know why/the mechanism-- elicits positive emotions or squashes the negative emotions of someone suffering, a brain chemistry incentive.

@Sanakudou
@Sanakudou 2 часа назад
Whilst it’s only anecdotal experience with some rescue rats I’ve had as pets, it takes a long time for an anxious rat to change its behaviour, ultimately it was a combination of factors that led to their rehabilitation, the most important thing that allowed me to help these rats was an understanding what specifically caused the behaviour. Helping an abused rat vs a neglected rat learn to feel safe required different approaches as they had very different triggers specific to their past experiences. That is one of the most important things for humans to do too as the specific causation for symptoms radically alters the way you treat and resolve those symptoms. For instance, some people with ADHD have anxiety and depression symptoms (including severe symptoms like su*cidal ideation) which are a consequence of their brain being permanently dopamine deficient. Thusly, symptoms resolve when they take ADHD medication like Vyvanse. However, if your anxiety is related to C-PTSD or a cluster b disorder like Borderline Personality Disorder it’s essential that a professional is involved to provide you with psychotherapy as both those conditions are predominantly consequences of childhood trauma that result in maladaptive behaviours and thought patterns that need to be identified, deconstructed and then (with the help of a psychologist or psychiatrist) replaced with new behaviours and mindsets that can better enable you to experience inner peace and thrive in life. Additionally, some depression and anxiety isn’t necessarily a “disorder” and is actually just a proportional response to extremely unfortunate living circumstance. In such a scenario the best assistance is support for improving one’s socioeconomic conditions/career planning and/or if lack of interpersonal connections is a major source of grief pursing goals that give you opportunities to form genuine friendships with other people. There are some psychologists who can assist people in difficult situations and help brainstorm and plan how to go about fixing your life. Ultimately, the most important thing you can do is try and figure out the likely causation for your symptoms and seek out a professional diagnosis, especially if you’re unable to identify the cause on your own. It’s impossible to treat a symptom without knowing its cause, particularly when that symptom is present in so many different conditions. One thing that remained true for every rescue rat I’ve had was their need for compassion and patience, healing takes time and every little bit of progress is worthy of celebration, so be sure to afford all of that to yourself whilst you find a way to heal.

Wonderful Wizard, thank you for your contribution to RU-vid. I loved the mention of epigenetics and how it manifests in rats; in fact, it helped solidify the concept of epigenetics and how it appears in the real world for me. I predict that cats may have a similar correlation involving licks and anxiety levels since people often groom motherless kittens with toothbrushes, but I may need to look into that further. "Rats contain morality" No, morality requires thinking. This is not that surprising. Wouldn't it be evolutionarily useful for young rats to receive information about the stress level of their mother (fewer licks, mom is probably more stressed) and adapt their own behaviour accordingly? So, still genetically determined, just also responsive to the environment.
