Traditional rattan furniture has been produced in Indonesia for generations but in the last few years its production and sales have decreased as rattan has become less fashionable and younger generations are loosing interest in this sector. Under the motto "Rattan for Life", the SWITCH-Asia project "Prospect Indonesia" supports this industry by training farmers, designers and producers, improving the quality and design of rattan products and promoting rattan-products' eco-friendly characteristics. A non-timber material, rattan grows by climbing the trees in the rainforest, thus helping to preserve forests and their local wildlife such as orangutans. Additionally, it contributes to a cleaner air by offsetting CO2 emissions.
