Have you noticed any noise coming from wheel side lately? Well sound from the wheel side can be because of many reasons. One of them is brake caliper rattling. Over time the lubricant inside the floater or slider pin dries out and results in rattling. You can hear rough rattling over roads and get silent while applying brake.

@michaeldvorak5556

@user-is2vy7ou4d By doing that, you put your brake components under tension. There are no loose parts to rattle. If rattle goes away, then brakes. If it still rattles, not brakes.

Compared to the bracket or caliper, pins are so cheap. So the manufacturer gives away in kits including pins. It wont rust bcs its kept at grease bath. but may sieze if it dries out or by introduction of dirt.

hi there, people does use can foils to minimise the play but should be properly lubricated. There're cases where the foil can seize the slider and fails the brake. Just buying new pins won't do the job, need to replace the brackets as well. As the aluminium bracket wears out more than steel pins. Ive got a similar thunk or clunk when im driving over bumps but it goes away sometimes under throttle and for sure when im braking. Took me forever to pinpoint when it did it but it always has done this since ive bought the car. Never had play in my slide pins, usually they seize up but ive replaced the entire caliper, rotor and pads and it still knocks. It sounds louder now but i think its moving less than before. It doesnt sound quite as rough anymore but its just concerning because it sounds like my calipers just loose. I think mine might be brake pad/caliper knockback. Im not that abusive on my car since its my daily but thats the only thing that i think could be it. Unless its in my suspension but i dont think it would go away under braking
@dailyhandsdiy
@dailyhandsdiy 2 года назад
Nice to hear from you, as suspected the one mentioned above can cause because of bad tie rods ends or lower arms. If its caliper, rattles really bad. Yes it gets quiet when braking. but a bad tie rod n lower arm does the same thing it quiets down when accelerating n braking as the joints gets pressed forward n backward when accelerating n braking reducing the sound. Its a good idea to check all the suspension joints for damages, i mean looseness. And yeah if you have got an electronic powersteering, there a washer or more like a spacer inside the rack. That too can make clucking noices.

Hearing a rattling over bumps. Checked it out and one of the calipers is quite loose. The other side has no play. Replace pins? I read you mentioned brackets too. Which bracket are you referring too? Where the pin slides in? I am doubtful a little clear tape will fix 1/8"+ play. But mine looks similar to your so maybe all I need is tape (anything special?) and some lube (grease work?) TY
@dailyhandsdiy
@dailyhandsdiy 2 года назад
Hi there, bracket means the frame which is bolted to knuckle and holds the brake pads. You could use aluminum sheets or copper for long life. tape can last less than a year, metal sheets lasts longer. dont forget to apply or fill in plenty of grease.

Thanks for this video and the explanation - I have the same problem and when I step on the brakes, the rattling immediately stops - so it's the caliper (bracket?). So, can I let this go and not get it fixed or is it dangerous? I already took it to a mechanic and they can't find anything wrong with the suspension, but probably didn't check the brake caliper. How long can I let the rattle continue before it becomes dangerous or an issue?

A tik tik sound while turning could be the axle going down. And if there no grease left inside the axle joints,could hear a grinding noise too. Also there could be something that's touching the rotor causing the noise. Do check the axles, visually check if there's anything mostly touching the rotor,may be the rotor guards, calipers, lower arm or any other parts.

This noise should be any thing, loose calipers or a loose part in drive train, body stabilizers. A loose caliper can be easily identified. You may ask the mechanic the same and check the caliper play. If its too loose,pin including the bracket should be replaced or just lubricating will do the job.

@cheeko_914
@cheeko_914 2 года назад
90% of the time a quarter inch kit will not be sufficient for normal work, especially brake jobs where every time you will need something at least ~8" long to break bolts free. Quarter inch tools are also less durable and give you less leverage. 3/8 is the minimum. I've only used my quarter inch ratchets for small engine work like coils and intake manifolds
@dailyhandsdiy

For professionals might need 3/8 but for starters and non professionals 1/4 does the job. I use 1/4 for the brakes manifolds turbos, did not broke till now. for suspension, and high torque bolts 1/2.

Even after changing the 3 engine mounts, the sound stayed the same (Spent a lot of money to do that). I just realised that whenever the sound comes, when i apply a bit of brake, the sound goes away. Which means the problem is in the brake caliper bracket and not on the mounts. Anyway, lesson learnt late. I am looking to change the brake caliper bracket now. Glad its noticed. At low rpms engine vibrates badly and too much micro backslashes are generated. This cause your transmission vibrate even more, this is transferred to the knuckle via axle and the brake bracket vibrates. This is why you hear rattle at lower engine speeds..

why don't you use the stainless steel shim. 001" maybe better

No never use hard metal here, could use aluminum or copper shims but not steel. There were cases of slider pine getting seized. Use nly soft metals or plastics or just replace the whole bracket n pins.

maybe you right steel shim get rust over time, maybe there grease dry up, steel shim u can have .001-.025" , brass shim usually .005" and not out there, pop can aluminum is .005", I think u lubricant pin every year even with steel shim should be ok ...

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Where is a rubber for bottom pin. Tape is nit heat resistant
@dailyhandsdiy
@dailyhandsdiy 2 года назад
There is no rubber and till now no issues found n sound. tape is not heat resistant but the pin area doesnot get heated as the disks or pads. plus its inside the pool of grease it wont melt.
@badtimegonesingh8883
@badtimegonesingh8883 2 года назад
I have read we use special silicon grease because of heat. You used tape to minimise gape. How long this trick work? , does it has negative effect on caliper or brakes pads?
@dailyhandsdiy
@dailyhandsdiy 2 года назад
Actually its advised to use copper based grease. This does not have any effect on calipers, just damper the sound.

@dailyhandsdiy
@dailyhandsdiy 2 года назад
Its the brake pad and disk that heats, caliper n bracket wont heat that much. Also its in grease bath. wont melt. but as times the tape may wear or get thinner and need a new one. Or could use a copper sheet or aluminium sheet instead.

I can’t believe you are adding tape to the guide bolts. That is not going to fix the problem but for a day at most. If the parts are worn replace them. You could have a serious accident if your brakes fail & tape will cause it sooner or later. DO’NT DO THIS!

Ever tried burning a papper with water in it or when its wet? wont burn. Plastic in grease wont get anything. But the mechanical wear can damage the plastic over short time. Thats why its called a temporary fix. You can use copper or aluminum sheets for longer durability.

Hi there mate, it won't hurt anything and the only downside is the sound comes back after some time and have to redo it. @@dailyhandsdiy your definitely no mechanic then. Lol. If you can't afford very small replacement parts for a safety aspect, its time to stop driving. If it was designed to have " tape " on brake parts, the manufacturer would also do this. But they don't as its downright dangerous. And a liability. But hey, if your a cheapskate and think you can fix your brakes with " tape" lol, who am I to say otherwise. I look forward to more money saving tips from you, this is comical....🤣🤣🤣

Like i said, there are different kind of people owning different vehicle. Some says,just replace that part. Some says, thats not acceptable and wont pay for the job. If you are a mechanic, might know both the situations. So for those who accept the replacement we do that professionally but for others.....what else can we do. And here, the plastic wears off overtime and the noise comes back, what else can happen. Only thing is the job and fix has to be warned to the owner, about the reoccurrance of the issue in future.
