By way of a progress report, I purchased this 2001 RAV from original owner who cherished this vehicle. All Toyota dealer services, garaged, 132K miles and pretty flawless. She put up for sale due to "intermittent" transmission shift problem and purchased a new vehicle for herself. I purchased it very low knowing that this might be more a board problem as opposed to a bona fide transmission problem. This video and others (Keenan Laws!) caused me to tackle this knowing NOTHING about soldering, pc board, electricity etc. I learned to solder and focused on the right flux, tin, lead solder etc. to make sure my efforts had the best chance of success. Re-soldered all the resistors and now want to go back and do the B209 transistor suggested by another contributor. I only took values after I re-soldered. All of my R330's, on board, measure .4-.5 "ohms of resistance." I really do know nothing. But, I'm interested in why Trav MC's R330's are reading .00 - nothing. Finally took the car out for a long drive today and it cleared up very nicely. I suspect that the computer will have to re-learn several things that have been influenced by what I think were cold solder joints on resistors. An occasional 1-2 harshness and an occasional indecisiveness between 3-4, and or, some slipping. The long ride home on the interstate this evening found a flawless operation. It does seem noticebly improved and correct. Also will change out transmission fluid/filter with Toyota Transmission fluid T-IV ready to go. Put a scanner to her and the only code reading were both oxygen sensors which are likely original. Hoping this improvement either stays or increases, characterized by a consistently improved operation over time. If tomorrow is as good or better than today, I believe this was a WIN. Thanks to all the contributors, especially those guys who really know what they are doing and contend graciously with guys like me who know next to nothing about things electrical. Thank you!

Hey, thanks for the video. I also watched Keenan Laws video. I did this repair yesterday, seems to be working much much better now, only some issues going from 1st to 2nd, shits a bit late sometimes. Did this completely clear up for you after the computer "relearned"??? Thanks. I'm not sure if I need to pull it back out and re do it

@@mygamertag2010X Mine also shifts a bit late from 1st to 2nd. But once the car warms up, it goes away. Other than that, it's been working great and I'm still driving the RAV as of Aug 2022.

Hi - very educational video, I think I will attempt to do my wife rav4 as it is a little erratic, sometimes slips on first gear (feels like not pulling) and then rams gear in! also the gear change seams rough . My question is, is there a technique to do this type of soldering, I bought soldering Ion with adjustable temperature , but still I am a little apprehensive not to damage anything, is there the best temperature or maximum permit-able??

Here's a link to the R330 resistor from Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/100PCS-0-33-ohm-R330-330mR-1-1206-3216-1-4W-SMD-Chip-Resistor-3-2mm-1-6mm/392306316651?hash=item5b5747556b:g:-WQAAOSwMg9c8mp~ They are smaller than the original. I soldered 4 of them together with 2 pairs in series then together in parallel to give me the same resistance. It worked great. I also used Sea Foam Trans Tune to clean the transmission. Changed the transmission filter and did a complete transmission flush. It shifts amazing. Still running great after 4 years.

I was having problems with my rav4 2001 a transmission shop wanted 500.00 to replace solenoid A and B,fault code 0750 and 0753,I resoldered those resistors that Keenan mention on his video,that was 3 weeks ago,I can safely say my transmission is fixed, it helps if you know how to solder , you dnon't have to replace the resistors unless they look burned , if it matches the ohms of other resistors it's most likely good.

Hi everyone, my RAV4 is still shifting great. I recently found that you can buy the actual resistors on eBay here: www.ebay.ca/itm/264540335060 I also bought a Toyota Techstream tool and reset the memory of the ECU for the Transmission. You MUST use the tool because disconnecting the battery of the car does NOT work in resetting the memory. The ECU needs to be reset. I have successfully done this. If you would like me to make a video on using Techstream to reset the memory, please comment below.

I have a 2004, and its having a lot of shifting issues. P0776 code as well. The board is not the same as the 01-03 it seems. Where are the resistors I need to solder on the 2004-2005? I cant find any information :(
@Lovemyfamily55
@Lovemyfamily55 7 лет назад
I'm sorry but I don't know the answer for a 2004 RAV4. However, it seems that for my 2002 RAV4, it's the largest surface mount resistors that needed the solder to be reflowed. If you can identify them on your circuit board, it wouldn't hurt to reflow the largest resistors.

Hi, so the measurement of 42.2 and 41.1 ohms of the 820 (82ohms) resistor is ok? I measured my 820s to 40.1. Do they need to be replaced?
@Lovemyfamily55
@Lovemyfamily55 6 лет назад
Hi Peter, I think you should be fine. 40.1 seems to be within range. The resistors are installed in parallel. An 82 ohm resistor that is free-standing, will become 41 ohms when connected in parallel. From my observation, 40.1 ohm is reasonable. Hope this helps. Is your RAV4 running better after the solder reflow? Cheers
@mekkern
@mekkern 6 лет назад
Captain Fritz thanks for the clarification. It didn’t make any difference by reflowing all the resistors. I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes also. But no improvement of the gear shifting problem. Sometimes I have no reverse. Other times reverse is engaged but slips so the car moves a bit and then the car just revs. Driving forward is fine in low speed. But becomes awkward when it tries to engage 3rd gear/4th gear. Usually it slips so it shifts down instead of up. Is it possible to verify in any other way that the ECU has been fixed? I’m gonna have a look at the transmission next week

Hello... How if it slips gear between 2 to 3rd gear
@Lovemyfamily55

If it is the 01 - 03, then I would try to resolder the resistors. Also try Seafoam Trans Tune. Then change the filter and do a complete transmission fluid flush. My car is still running great and shifting smoothly

BTW: do you have the values for those resistors that were "very high?" I'm curious. Thanks again. And, is there somewhere else somewhat reputable where I should be looking for resistors? I just can't bring myself to make a purchase like that on Ebay. Thank you!
@Lovemyfamily55
@Lovemyfamily55 7 лет назад
Yes, if you expand the comment box above, you will see the details of the "high" resistor values. R330 = 0.33 ohms and R27 = 0.27 ohms. If you wish to buy them from a reputable supplier locally, perhaps you can try and google electronic repair? I phoned all the local suppliers in my area but unfortunately, they did not carry this item. Please let me know how it worked.
@patrickphippspa584
@patrickphippspa584 7 лет назад
Thank you. You can assume I know nothing as I'm just trying to learn about all this. I still simply don't understand or see the values that seem excessive as in "pre-soldering." I'm sorry I didn't measure mine before I re-soldered them. I took the time to educate myself on how to solder, what gun to use, the correct solder, lead or no lead (definitely lead!), the correct flux and what it is and how to use it, tinning and then hit it. It was a long journey but very interesting. So, now that I re-soldered and re-installed, I see tremendous difference and improvement. However, I bought this RAV because of this condition so have no knowledge of it's behavior other than the original owner saying it became "intermitent." Seemed to start in 2nd and fuss around with 3rd. Always felt lugging. I never reversed it so I don't know about that. Does well now. The vehicle was well loved and taken care of by a woman who obviously cared a great deal for the RAV. I got it very inexpensive and was willing to grapple with the possibility of this being the solution. Has 132K and as a one car owner, you might guess correctly that it's really nice. Garaged. Anyway, I did notice some slipping and whacky too soon shifting from 2-3, but seemed to progressively get better and behave as one would expect within 3 miles or so. Some say the positive changes come after the re-solder and a couple days on the road. I'm hoping for that, but I'm encouraged at the ease of doing the job, especially correctly. I enjoyed it and now I understand that there is a transistor that would benefit from a re-flow. I may pull the board out again and re do it while I'm fresh. Perhaps if you simply told me the value of the two offending resistors in the PRE and POST condition, I'd understand more. Having read your contribution, I multimetered my work and the values were essentially the same as yours. My values were a wee bit smaller, but consistently so throughout, so I presumed it was more a reflection of the difference in calibration of your meter and mine. Thanks for your efforts, you helped a great deal and made the process enjoyable!
@Lovemyfamily55
@Lovemyfamily55 7 лет назад
Wow.. congratulations. That is great news. I'm glad to hear it seems to be working. I think you've correctly diagnosed and repaired the problem. BTW, which transistor would benefit from a reflow? Would you mind sending me a link that shows the location as I wasn't aware of this fix? Thanks !!

Ok...to be specific, I found this author on RAV4WORLD.com after typing in something like "rav ecu." There is a chain of comments that seems to be linked to the thread "fix your ecu yourself...for free." In this thread, one contributor, "bachphi" on 5/17/15 says, yes, do all the large resistors AND the B906 transistor next to the 820 resistors. That's where I got this which seemed to take care of this guy's issues. Thank GOD for the internet and wonderful contributors like yourself!
