Ravel truly was the king of orchestration, and I would argue that he was the greatest post-romantic composer and maybe even the greatest French composer.

One of the most brilliant interpretations and performances of daphnis and Chloe suite number 2. The solo instrumentalists were brilliant. The Tempi was flawless... Just magnificent. Kudos to conductor Altingalu and the orchestra. This is one of my favorite pieces in all of the orchestral repertoire, and it is rare that I give such compliments.

It still blows my mind that Ravel wrote this, Bolero, Mother Goose, and the piano concerto... all so different and so so good. (Valse is good too, but is kind of similar to the last third of this!)

My favorite composer and favorite orchestration. So much is centered around the variations of flute. From the shrills and flutters of the piccolo in the beginning, the amazing flute solo is a dream, and ending with the alto flute showing the lower and deeply intimate range of the instrument. Ravel was so amazing!

Great performance indeed. As far as the chorus is concerned I believe Ravel expressly wrote this suite to be without the chorus. It is basically the final 3rd of the ballet. If you are going to have the chorus it really make sense to perform the entire ballet, which is very much worth hearing. There is also a Suite number one which is rarely played. This is probably because it is shorter and although it contains truly wonderful music it does not work as well as a stand alone, and suffers from the lack of the chorus.
@mbradley5683
@mbradley5683 3 года назад
True, but I also think it’s a nice compression of the themes of the ballet and is lovely for anyone to hear, it ESPECIALLY those who already know the ballet itself- I don’t think the swan lake shouldn’t be performed as suite with an orchestra because they don’t play the ENTIRE BALLET😂 but then again it is different, the themes that appear in this suite do appear out of musical context when taken on its own... it sounds fine to me though idk, people seem to love this

I finally got to see this piece performed live last night at my local orchestra, it was magical. I brought my friend with me and it was his first time going to a classical music concert. I've always loved this piece and have always wanted to hear it live, I keep replaying the concert in my head. My next bucket list piece is Debussy's La Mer (my favorite orchestral piece of all time), but my local orchestra somehow never programs it.

@danmoran454
@danmoran454 4 года назад
I think it's a matter of tradition rather than costs. In a performance of this kind, the Chorus is not used, although it should be. Most Choruses perform for free with an Orchestra as their invited guest, in part, because it gives them exposure (I know from having sung in the three major Orchestra Choruses in the US) where the choristers have to pay their own expenses if they are travelling to perform with an Orchestra. This is also the case for Orchestras that have their own Chorus. All Orchestra Choruses should be paid, just like the orchestral musicians are paid. Perhaps the hr-Sinfonieorchester pay the choral ensembles that perform with them, but that's not usually the way it works. In this performance, they performed splendidly, as they always do. Very grateful to them that they make their superb performances available internationally in video format. Their production crew is also excellent. Danke.
@cesargoodman5753
@cesargoodman5753 4 года назад
I agree about that the cost is not the matter, but sometimes is about the logistic. Where to put the choir, back stage, all the rehearsal schedule and so on. That the difficult part. And also get a choir is not SO easy, and if it is just for the suite and the choir is not really necessary, is not required. In case of pieces like for example The Beethoven 9th or a Mahler's symphony or Carmina Burana that is a Cantanta and all that kind of music thar the choir is the main thing, or at least in some parts, then the choir is request. In this suite, or the polovsian dances or the Peer Gynt suites (to give you some examples), the choir is not THAT necessary.
