This final movement was composed by Ravel in memory of Captain Joseph de Marliave, a musicologist and husband of Marguerite Long.
For the finale, Ravel gives us a "Toccata", a name typically given to Baroque compositions that primarily showcased the player's skills at a given instrument. Indeed, this is a no-holding-back display of keyboard virtuosity, probably meant to bring the house down.
In fact, this finale is so "pianistic" that it's only one of two movements in this suite (along with the Fugue, curiously) that Ravel chose not to orchestrate.
