Amazing how well the icons are preserved within the church. It makes me wonder how many churches were destroyed over the centuries that possessed such beauty?

I visited two years ago ; such a great alternative to the big five Italian cities … I prefer towns to cites … You can see all the major attractions / churches in 2 days … all but one by foot … Also , Dante is buried at city center … And near that a house Lord Byron once lived …

Gotta add that, while Rome did suffer barbarian raids after the fall of the empire, it was sacked mostly by the Byzantine Empire, taking some of the best ancient roman swag for Byzantium.

Uh actually... Italy was much better before Justinian invaded. His invasion turned the whole peninsula into ash and overextended the empire. The Ostrogoths had a pretty cool government, more or less continuing the roman empire and its traditions.
