Thoughts: 1. Ozzie Newsome drafted three of the NFL'S top 100 players. 2. In 1996, the Ravens had two first-round picks. They chose Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis. 3. Lamar Jackson is having an Allen Iverson-like impact on the NFL. When Iverson entered the league, there were no small guards that dominated basketball games in their entirety. The NFL has not seen this level of talent and productivity in an individual. Lamar will lead the NFL in touchdown passes, QBR, and will finish top-five in rushing yards. Just as AI was must-see TV, same for AI. Lamar feels like he is for the culture, just like AI.

I'll play devils advocate and say that a lot of teams weren't built for lamar both from a coaching and team perspective. The Ravens have a really good defense, a really good running back, a really good complementary back, and a top 3-5 head coach. They went all in to build the offense around Lamar Jackson's skillset and it paid off. That's just my opinion why a lot of teams wouldn't want to spend a first round pick on him when they don't have the necessary tools to maximize his potential. The Ravens are a great and healthy organization, QBs drafted in the first rarely get that

Lamar Jackson also seems dedicated to improving year round. They're a great organization and he's a great player and they deserve all the success they get.

@Keirnoth
@Keirnoth 4 года назад
Agreed. Jackson is forcing the entirety of the league to completely upturn their coaching style. They're too used to the "big guy in the center" and crafting their defense and offense around that. Jackson is reminding people that if you continue running that style, you are going to get outsmarted by an offense that now has a QB that is quick and nimble AND a good passer. Lamar has amazing game sense. He can see holes open up in the defense and run in. Too many teams are used to these QBs being slow to respond to holes in the pocket but Lamar knows how to turn on the jets as soon as he sees it loosen and he's torn apart defensive lines because of it. Jackson is a proper evolution for the NFL. I hope to see more QBs of Jackson's caliber in the future.

Alex Flowers, REALTOR good number but what about the 10 years before that or the 80 years before that? The last 10 years have proven that black people can play Qb and most of those picks were clearly better then most in college. See my thing is this with a lot of stuff, it’s about generations. If a former black player from like the 60s wanted his son to play Qb he would probably make him switch positions because he knows how hard it is to make it in the NFL. Unlike somebody like Archie Manning who had his sons play Qb since a young age and knew the plan as a black player from that generation it was no way you telling your sons to play Qb because you know how hard it is. So now Blacks are generations behind that’s why some are hesitant to take black QBs because they mostly only know white QBs.

It’s not really an NFL narrative though. It’s historically the recipe for success. Name 20 qb’s that have succeeded and won championships with his style of play. Huge Lamar Jackson fan but I hate that everybody’s using his success to push their own agenda.
@gracialonignasiver6302
@gracialonignasiver6302 4 года назад
@@juansosa6050 That's a very flawed line of thinking. There have only been around 2 to 5 QB's in the history of the league with the skill set of Lamar or Vick. Compare that to the literally hundreds of QB's throughout the NFL's history who have been the prototypical tall and immobile QB then of course you won't see as many QB's with Lamar's skill set winning championships. But that's just sheer probability. If at any given time the League has 31 Classical QB's and 1 Lamar style QB, then the odds are heavily in favor for a Classical style QB to win the Super Bowl.

From a league that was left for dead following the 'flag' controversy, Lamar's emergence may indeed be the magic pill that saves the league. He is so dynamic, so watchable, he'll single handedly be responsible for billions of dollars in added revenue to the league and he's still a second year player! This kind of impact only players of the magnitude of MJ, Tiger, LeBron, Messi have. Lamar is a mega star being born in front of our very eyes.

Ozzie stands out as one of the very very few black GMs with a career of any length. He never came to the draft with preconceived notions about "poise" or "motor" or the idea that black QBs run because they aren't smart enough to progress past their first read.

Just as important, he didn't even come to the draft with a white head coach that wasn't smart enough to let him run in the first place.

Maybe his mother was able to instill those values in Him because she herself probably had a strong male figure in her home or the respect she had for lamars father. I think Lamars dad played a big part on how he is today based on his composure and how he deals with high pressure situations. But the media loves to give all the credit to the mother instead of giving value to both parents because they want the women to think she can raise her child by herself subconsciously.

Let's not forget Greg Romans play calling the 2nd time around, Capernick was Romans coming out party. Also, the mistakes of RG3 and Vick were good case studies for Action Jackson. That 3 TE rotation - run, block, catch is best new wrinkle to hit the NFL since jumbo package.

Let's get real, the effectiveness of Lamar's style of play and Baltimore's schemes that take advantage of his skill set have immediate modern precedents that can be traced back to Tebow in Denver and Kaepernick in SF. Lamar's just taking things up a notch, but this isn't completely new. Hats off to the Harbaugh and Roman for having the courage to go against the grain and a bigger pat on the back to Ozzie for the support and allowing the staff to try it.

I keep going back to the interview with Deion Sanders after he got picked by the Ravens. There was a look that I saw that I saw in two guys: Derek Jeter and Tiger Woods. They are guys that would do anything... ANYTHING... to beat you. I believed him when he said that the Baltimore Ravens are Super Bowl bound. He’s the guy that won’t stop until he achieves the goal. And then because he’s been doubted he wants more. It might not happen this year, but it’s coming soon. Lamar Jackson is coming.

All we can do is think of possibilities that Lamar may not last 10yrs with this kind of play. But if you look at Michael Vick, he managed to play longer than 6 years. So let us ride with this Lamar bus and enjoy, and i think it will be a long ride. Just watch his highschool and colleges games. He did managed to stay strong and he will just get better even before he reach 30yrs old :)

I subscribed to the thought that you project a quarterback for the next 10 years. I love that Brian said you might get the most exciting 5 years out of Lamar. Great point. He would still be viewed a tremendous success. I’m from Florida. I wonder if Tim Tebow could have been successful with the right visionary. He definitely is a winner but the NFL or John Eleanor couldn’t figure out how to use his talents.

It ridiculous to act like Lamar Jackson was some hidden gem who everyone scoffed at. He was a Heisman Trophy winner who was drafted in the first round. Sure, a few QBs were drafted before him. That doesn't mean he was under the radar. He was highly lauded.

The best leaders in any organization are the ones with "vision"...Hard to believe that Baker Mayfield was picked in that same draft with the number 1 overall pick...SMH...He wasn't 6-4 240 but was still selected very high...In addition...Lamar Jackson did win the Heisman trophy in his sophomore year while at Louisville in a pro-style offense under coach Robert "Bobby" Petrino...

Of those (7) QB's you named only (2) were able to remain consistent at a high level and that was McNair and Cam. We've seen all of those QB's achieve success so you're right it isn't new. But with LJ8 we're looking for consistency and longevity.

VY the NFL just decided the didn’t want him his play didn’t really decline Vick’s play fell off after injuries and Reid left Tebow had other issues RG tried to convert to pocket passer Kaep was banished The main point is that the style of play is not ineffective.

Are you kidding Cam took a team to the SB and was MVP Nearly 70% accuracy 24TD and was on pace for a 30 TD 4000 yd passing 500 yd rushing season before getting hurt about 1/2 way through RG3 problem isn’t his leadership its that he refuses to throw before seeing the guy open resulting in unnecessary sacks scrambles and hits.

Cause he looked different, sound different and talks different. Simple as that. And NFL teams know their audience very well, they want a jersey that sells and someone the masses could relate to not just the minority. Life is like that. But too bad for them he’s a beast and a generational talent. Skol!!

Russ Wilson is buying into that pocket quarterback philosophy and not running as much to keep the opposing defense honest like Lamar. Russ Wilson is predictable now, when it pertains to Russ running the ball like he was running it to get the super bowl and a fat contract. He’s trying to cruse and he will never win the Super bowl again
