In the final episode of Raw Craft, season two, Anthony Bourdain and The Balvenie head to Los Angeles to meet with master cobbler, Raul Ojeda of Willie’s Shoe Service. Willie’s Shoe Service has been around since the 50’s and has been creating shoes for Hollywood films and everyday people for decades. Watch as the team constructs perfectly made custom shoes that will last a lifetime. Directed by Rob Meyer. Music by Tim O'Keefe & Andy Rourke. Photography by Rob Stark.
The Balvenie Distillery alliance with craft is a result of the brand’s choice to embrace the old way. Balvenie is dedicated to the process of using the five rare crafts of Scotch whisky making to create The Balvenie’s distinctive taste and exceptional quality. It is the only distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional malting floor, employs coopers to tend every cask, a coppersmith to maintain the stills and a malt master to ensure the resulting spirit is consistently excellent.
Warehouse 24 offers its members access to exclusive events, early notice of new product releases and insight & knowledge from The Balvenie’s team of craftsmen. Join here: us.thebalvenie.com/warehouse2....

Actually, using ''shoemaker'' as an insult has to do with something that got lost in translation: before the French Revolution, 95% of the population wore clogs, not leather shoes, which were expensive. Clogs could be hewn out of a log in half an hour using an adze and a gimlet. So a guy hacking away at a log was a clogmaker (''sabotier'' in French) and if a cook hacked away at a piece of meat with a chef's knife instead of a meat cleaver, the chef might exclaim, ''What are you, a clogmaker or something?''. Btw, my father was a seventh-generation shoemaker. R.I.P., Anthony, sorely missed.

Well done! I really enjoy Bourdain's first-person experiences and engagement with the artist (his personal suit, kitchen knife, shoes, skillet) but he's wise enough to branch out beyond that. I'm very pleased, too, that Balvenie Distillery has sponsored the series, posting the shows without charge on youtube. (I bought a bottle, as a thank you to Balvenie - great stuff!)

I worked at a big handmade boot company for four years doings uppers (the top leather components) and various other things. This made me miss it a lot, we of course used more machines but a lot was hand done for thin expensive leather like in this video. I quit because the pay was bad, but I, and many others had a real passion for the work. I was apart in making and repairing celebrities boots and besides the pay, the work was all worth it and lead to great learning experiences.
