LEEDS PARISH #34: RAWDON
Welcome to Rawdon, right on the Western boundary of the city of Leeds where it meets with neighbouring Bradford.
Rawdon is the newest civil parish in Leeds. It existed as one from 1866 until 1937, when it was merged into Horsforth, but it became one again in 2012
The land here has changed hands a few times over the centuries. One of its owners was Francis Layton, a great nephew of Richard Layton, who was a Dean of York
In 1718 the Layton estate which included all of Yeadon and parts of Horsforth, was split up. Rawdon landed in the hands of the Emmott family - a name carried by a local pub
Colonel Charles Payne Barras, who was an agent of the family in the 1860s, would found a brick and tile works in Yeadon using Rawdon’s most abundant local resource - clay
Perhaps a reference to that can be seen in its name. Rawdon comes from the Old Norse word “rauðr” which means “red”, and the Old English “dūn” which means hill - and there’s a few here
Rawdon is perhaps best known industrially though for the manufacture and dyeing of cloth, as there was a textile mill at the foot of its most prominent hill
