In police Motor school they teach the same technique with one difference. Grip the front brake lever at the same time so the bike does not roll when you are trying to pick it up. If the bike is on the opposite side make sure its in gear so the bike does not roll when lifting

Good evening Jim thank you for this very nice technique to lift the GS 1200 adventure is very important with this position the driver can finally lift his bike without asking for help from anyone. Good luck and courage Jim.

Two techniques demonstrated. Both fine. What about the third? GS in gear, side stand down, reverse lock on the bar so the right grip is high, grip the bar, lift with the legs. Easy peasy. Good grip. Lots of leverage. Physics does the job. Demonstrated on other BMW videos on RU-vid.

Thanks for the demo. Signed up to attend your training in Castaic. Want to learn how to pick up one of the BMWs without the opposing cylinder heads, such as a F800GS or F650GS.

I have the 650gs, went down in the sand, and it was so flat to the ground doing this technique did not seem to work. Suggestions?

@@bluejayrover There's a product advertised in BMW ON mag: www.motobikejack.com/video.html It's a bike jack. Their videos only show a 1200GS being picked up on pavement. I asked them on their contact page how their product works with a 2013 F800GS (421 lbs. dry) or F650GS, both of which do not have the extended boxer head space, and lie flat on the ground. That boxer cylinder head space makes all the difference. FYI I've never been able to get my bike up by myself and the BMW MOA presentations of a gal named 'Skirts' picking up a 1200GS were always on pavement with the cylinder head propping it up.

@@YosemiteFour Thanks for the link. Own a big ole Harley Ultra and looking at the Pan America as well. Ride solo a lot, getting older with bad knees. Have dropped that big bike a few times. This product is a Godsend. Just ordered it and sent the info to my other older riding buddies.

I dropped mine and couldn't get it back up without help. I was trying to lift it uphill. I "thought" I did everything you said in the video, so either i'm a lot weaker than I think or I didn't do something correctly. Oh well. Hopefully it will be a while before I have to try it again. lol

Me too. I dropped an S1000XR loaner bike on roadside gravel. I did everything in this video, and I just couldn't lift the bike backup on my own. My feet would slide on the dirt before I can make the bike move.
@fasfan
@fasfan 3 года назад
I have since dropped it two more times. (I'm not happy about it. Lol) Once in gravel where I had to use the handlebar lift because my feet also kept slipping in the gravel. The other time was on asphalt. I was able to easily use the seated lift to get it back up.
@superflycatchermtb
@superflycatchermtb 3 года назад
If you drop your bike on a hill with the wheels uphill from the seat, you're probably not going to be able to lift it uphill. In that case, the best way is to spin it around on the cylinder head so that the wheels are either downhill from the seat, or that the bike is in line with the hill.

That boxer motor makes this a lot easier of a task not allowing the bike to fall all the way down
@drzrider3440

I think I need one. Im an avid ADV rider. I have built my DRZ400 for a light ADV bike. But when it falls over, it falls all the way over. And both tires come iff the ground. So im always lifting all the weight of it. I know that the big wide engine it has orevents it from falling all the way over. And i dont do hard core offroad anymore. I like riding the Idaho BDR. This bike seems like its suited for my riding. Have ridden for 35 yrs now. Used to own big 1100 sport bikes and 1500cc vulcan. So i can ride. Just picking the bike up has proven lately to be harder and harder due to back issues. I guess before buying one, I need to find someone with one that would allow me to set it on its side and then attempt to lift it. I know they make kits with a ratchet strap and a pole if I had too. But im small like the woman in the video. So im guessing it can pick one up. So maybe its time. 1st step is to find one I can pick up.

This works great on dry firm ground. But when I drop my Tiger, it’s usually in mud or deep sand. And my boots slip out on me when I try to lift the bike. Suggestions?
@RawHydeAdventures
@RawHydeAdventures 4 года назад
well.... I'm afraid there's no perfect solution... If it were me I'd try to find some twigs, some brush or a small branch or two to put in the mud under my boots for traction...
@superflycatchermtb
@superflycatchermtb 3 года назад
It's one reason I stopped wearing Motocross boots and started wearing ADV boots. The MX boots had smooth sole and had terrible traction for lifting or pushing a bike around.

I say BS. How many people will tip over on a GS on flat solid ground with on obstacles? I wanna see these people teach skills thats practical. I wanna see this person lift a GS 1250 on uneven muddy ground with tree's and branches in your way? This is where you typically go down and not on flat surfaces.
@TanzanianRoots

I could not pick my GS800 up which is lighter than this. I want to invent something like a telescoping pole thats designed to fit into the bike somewhere and you can use its leverge to lift the bike. When your done it folds up to a foot long and stows away...Any venture capitalists out there?

I use to have a GS800 and now have a r1200GS. the GS is actually easier to pick up....maybe even a lot easier because it doesn't lay down flat, it rests on the cylinders. You should go out with a buddy, and practice picking up your bike...the technique shown here works, but it is tougher with a f800. Also, if you are sideways to a hill and the wheels are uphill, it's nearly impossible to lift by yourself, you have to spin the bike around on the ground so that the wheels are downhill not uphill.
@TanzanianRoots
@TanzanianRoots 3 года назад
@@superflycatchermtb I actually meant my F800 not GS800. Cylinders are vertical so it lies pretty flat. I should go to the gym a bit more too :)
@superflycatchermtb
@superflycatchermtb 3 года назад
@@TanzanianRoots Right, I meant F800GS also. and yes the inline cylinders means it lies flat when it falls over which makes it harder to pick up than the 1200. I was doing some slow speed drills this afternoon, getting use to my 1200. It fell over and was so easy to lift back up. My f800 was a beyotch to lift, and mine was a 2010....the f800 is 40-60 pounds heavier now

Apparently you missed the point. The whole point of the video was for THAT bike. He stated numerous times "these bikes." Even the title of the video specified THAT BIKE. If you want a video on how to pick up a different bike... go to a different video. Your thumbs down just shows you weren't paying attention, so I thumb downed your comment.

The problem is; they ALWAYS show (off) lifting a 1200 GS. I have only found ONE video showing how to lift the 800GS. And that was (of course) a guy...
@fasfan
@fasfan 3 года назад
@@synneb8985 the techniques are the same. It's more about physics than the bike. Butt into the seat.. grab the bars and another solid point.. then walk backwards into the bike. The tires will grab and the bike should pivot to an upright position.
@synneb8985
@synneb8985 3 года назад
@@fasfan well, I have tried (several times), and can't get the wheel on the ground. And the guy that lifted the 800gs, used other methods.
@fasfan
@fasfan 3 года назад
@@synneb8985 the only real other method I've seen is to grab the handle bar and lift. The butt into the seat seems to be the most common method and least likely to cause injury. I hope you find something that works for you. I think there's a company that makes small Jack's to help right a bike. Might be worth looking into.
