Utpal Dutta is being absolutely brutal here. This is what I admire about the man. Many of us fail to realize that here's a man who was erudite, well read, well travelled and most of all a man of conviction.

What a magnificent monologue... I can't think of any actor of this generation who can even understand this talk...the depth of understanding..the knowledge of world history and art..are awesome... Gone the days of intellectual actors and directors... We only hope for this kind of greatness, for our next generation and the present one.

This generation neither has the depth nor the maturity to reflect or connect with whatever he mentioned. Neither surely would they have an exposure of rich vocabulary as this monologue. What satire...what thoughts, what amazing debates and conclusions. Such were the men we lost without giving them back the due reverence whilst alive.

Hirak Rajar Deshe won’t have released if Ray were to make it today! It is, after all, a fairy tale! I wonder why this isn’t shown to kids in schools ? Be it Bengal or other states? It is a pity that Ray had to wait till the very end to receive a Lifetime Achievement award when he was in hospital counting his last days. Had he been a Director born in the West, I am sure many of his movies today would have won the Academy Awards for Best films. Only recently Hollywood film-makers like Martin Scorsese have started openly acknowledging the immense contribution of Ray on world cinema. But it is too late. Old was really gold. Heerak Rajar Deshe can never be old. I still watch in my 37 years of age. Agantuk! who can forget? Ray has worked with 02 other great talents also, Chhabi Biswas and Tulsi Chakraborty. One shouldn't forget Pahari Sanyal's own song in advanced age in Aranyer Dinratri- that was the quality bengali cinema used to have in those days. Utpal Datta is widely appreciated in the Hindi-speaking world as a talented comedian and villian for his many loveable performances starting from Bhuvan Shome to Golmal. But,the "much nahin to kuch nahin"spouting cussed senior citizen, was little known, perhaps, beyond Bengal as a pioneering stage artist, who learnt his craft from Geoffrey Kendal, was a pioneering Director, writer, actor of stage plays, founder of a famous play group and a respected afficiniado and critic of Western and Indian classical and folk music before he acted in movies both Bangla and Hindi. In fact, before all of this and for the better part of his life he was a committed Communist who used to regularly sent most of his earnings from Mumbai to his Party and Theatre Group in Bengal. Utpal Datta is "versatile" and not a "Renaissance Man", as he himself in this Seminar, dedicated to Satyajit Ray in 1992, expounds and critically examines. Utpal Datta hectors, quite literally, the bureaucratic cognoscenti for their philistinism and hypocricy in their celebration of Ray.And in this tirade you shall get to see what Ray is but paradoxically, invisibilised despite the almost cult-like following and heaps of writings on him.Importantly, one gets to see what is it that makes Utpal Datta,a Maverick and the crusading intellectual.
