Perhaps, but as Phil and Pegorino point out, he was too ambitious for his own good. He went with the wrong connections in doing the diamond deal, and trusted the wrong people e.g. Johnny and Luca’s crew and an item like that would be too hot to sell immediately.

Part of it has to do with him not having an execution option like the other characters. But it makes it interesting how he doesn't get out of the car whining "I always looked out for you..." or any rants or tirades. It's like he fully expected this was going to happen, or that it was business (knowing Jimmy ordered the hit rather than Niko personally turning on him) and thus resolved to go down fighting rather than begging.

I would've preferred Ray to get out of the car calmly and stay put and say positive things to Niko, be like a gentleman instead. He could've had his hands up and said something like: "It was nice working with ya Nicky."

Considering Ray's temper & the fact he was a high ranked mobster, I couldn't imagine him going out the same way as petty street thugs like Playboy X or Clarence. Mikhail may have ran, but even he didn't beg for mercy, only tried warning Niko of Dimitri's disloyalty. It was DO OR DIE for Boccino. I wish his death wasn't so anticlimactic tho.

I mean you could make the argument Ray was moving around a bunch of diamonds that Niko had no idea were originally Bulgarin’s. Considering at this point Niko was already being blackmailed by ULP, & hunted by Dimitri & his former debtor from the old country; he needed to charge higher for criminal activity considering the risk he was taking when he had already made a lot of enemies. Or even just something simple like Niko said that out of frustration rather than actually hoping to make more money since he’s been chasing Florian and Darko. Or even simpler like inflation is crazy because rpg rockets cost $5000, & suits from Perseus cost like $2500. Idk it’s just fun to think about headcannon wise. Also Niko’s main goal was to come to America to seek revenge so I can see why he’d be getting frustrated at this point when he’s found nothing and only gotten deeper into trouble.

Pegorrino was paranoid and blamed it all on his most hard working, loyal employee who’s only suspicion was that he was too good at his job. It felt like Rockstar ran out of ideas for the guy's arc, Ray always has been truthful to Niko and kept his words and even paid him fair. I know this is an old comment, but I agree. When Jimmy called and gave Niko the orders to kill Ray and Niko seemed like he didn't care I was literally screaming no to my computer. I always felt Ray as loyal, helping out Niko with finding Bernie Crane and he never double-crossed anyone.

That is what made the 3 stories so interesting. Certain characters are portrayed differently in the 3 games. In GTA 4 Ray is an ally to Niko but in TLAD he is the second antagonist and responsible for wrecking the Lost clubhouse.

Tbf Johnny giving the money to Jim was a smart move since Jim is the treasurer of the LC Lost MC. Johnny is good with finance but there’s a reason Jim is the friggin treasurer.

Jah N has a point. The missions were definitely more unique and something else. What I really like about this, though, is that Rockstar might've set a precedent for themselves for further titles here. GTA San Andreas, the first game in Los Santos, was filled to the brim with cool mechanics, gameplay varieties, stats and much else that made it just incredibly fun to play. The story was pretty damn good, too, though moreso focused on the ever-present satirical aspect of the GTA series, which is especially evident by the fact a lot of the characters were quite gimmicky and one-sided (you've got the conspiracy-driven hippie The Truth, the neo-imperialist Toreno, the expendable pimp Jizzy B, washed up writer Rosenberg, etc etc) - a lot of the main ones still had progression, but it was moreso a means to an end. GTA IV turned this around a bit by truly doubling-down on the story aspect, and having some legitimate choices that affected the whole setting and narrative (reminder that choices as a determining mechanic was very popular at the time, but this game did it so well). There were a ton of characters here too, but they were less archetypical and had more depth to them - the friendship-mechanic did a lot to expand on specific ones as well. Obviously there were some stereotypes here too, but it wasn't as evident as in SA, since it went for a much different feel; much more gritty, realistic and morally ambiguous. This also meant cutting down on some of the mechanics - I mean, SA and V are just packed so much more with content to do and stats to raise than this one, but I think it worked pretty well to focus more on the narrative. And yup, the SA-feel returned a lot more in V too. The Los Santos-vibe, which the heaps of mechanics, unique missions and over-the-top societal satire; but this also meant the story had less weight to it, since it needed to fulfill that colourful, varied role. A bit like the actual cities themselves; Los Angeles being filled with glitz & glamour and fake, superficial (though a lot of em!) things to do - while New York is more grey, rainy and mournful. This could mean, if we return to Liberty City, we might get more of some sweet, juicy, morally ambiguous storytelling filled with choices that are actually interessting and characters that have weight to 'em. Just my two cents. This ended up being much longer than I envisioned.

True, he's often being bitten by every other grunt he hires. And while, yes, it's true he's not unequivocally evil (much the same like Al Capone), he's up to his eyes with scandal. While I have yet to do a comprehensive analysis on the Diamond job, Jimmy P seems to be of the mind about Ray being too greedy. Which might not be saying much... The Peg might not know Niko was involved so this might hint at previous botched jobs. But even if JP knows about Niko's involvement, Jimmy might still have a good point that Ray Boccino gets involved in too many things like this. Jobs where there's too many variables out of his control. True, gains often require risks and gambling but the shrewd, smart wiseguy knows a foolish game from a lucrative one. So, is Boccino too ambitious? Personally I say there's not enough information to say definitively. Mobsters like him are always having a hand in racketeering, theft, extortion, "protections", jury tampering, and the list goes on. He has no qualms about screwing people over, this story just might've caught his good side. He might be a tragic villain but make no mistake, he didn't get where he is by playing nice.

It was shown in TBoGT that Billy tried settin' up Johnny & Jim to get clipped by the Triads which they attempted to, but also turned on Billy so Johnny had nothing to do with his arrest. As for Johnny rippin' off Ray, that made the outro scene for "Was It Worth It?" a bit irritating as Johnny talks like Ray betrayed him when it was vice versa & Ashley claiming Billy tried to turn Ray against him, unaware that Johnny robbed Ray. From a phone call with Angus, it was apparent they didn't like associating with the mob, but I didn't get why Johnny would cross them, especially when he didn't want war with the Triads. Ray had warned Johnny twice about the money, and he still tried something & thought Ray would take his word over Niko's, whom Ray already knew he could trust.

12227UserName I think other characters called Ray greedy not because of a simple lust for money, but because he was gaining power from his own schemes and was well on track to reaching a position where he'd no longer have any reason to be associated with Jimmy. I have no doubt Ray would have succeeded in leaving Jimmy in the dust if Niko didn't kill him, since Ray's management skills are clearly far better than those of a guy who killed more of his own men than anyone else and trusted Dimitri.
