@@katieanne7450 in modern times, it kind of is. They didn't have anything to help them back then, so she was forced to let him figure out how to use his other senses on his own. I don't think it was really extreme, I know she was doing it for his own good because one day she won't be there for him. But I personally would have comforted him and told him it's okay but you're gonna have to learn how to figure it out because I won't be there for you forever and everything, and then leave him to it. Not easily cured, but modern medicine can slow it's effects. My brother has glaucoma and it's awful stuff man... He at least made it to his 20s before he started losing peripheral vision. Even today with surgeries and drops childhood glaucoma will typically render you blind by your 50s or 60s. The treatments aren't cures, they just delay blindness. Every time I watch this movie this scene always makes me cry 😢 because when Ray Charles went blind and he started to call his mother for help but when his senses came to him and when he hugged his mother that scene always touches my heart.

She's so proud of Ray using his senses to move around, exactly what she wanted him to do. _BUT_ at the same time, there's the pain of your child losing his vision

Traww 95 i think they meant that black people would have been treated differently and he could have been given medication that wasn’t as good or possibly harmful medication to scam the mother for her money which would mean she would keep coming back and paying for more, just a theory though

I understand why you would think that, but his sight was already getting worse and worse. Even without the medication I think he would of gone blind.

Shame that people seem to have an issue with this type of tough love parenting...and then be confused when their kids never learn to problem solve.
@MsPatrioteqc
@MsPatrioteqc 3 года назад
Because a lot of people mix up tough love and beating/emotional abuse. When its the second, your kids learn bad behaviors and most likely turns into mental illnesses that will take years to heal.

@@MsPatrioteqc Beautifully said. Some parents don't know what 'tough love' is and often confuse it with abuse.
@ikariiprince
@ikariiprince 2 года назад
@@MsPatrioteqc this exactly. A lot of parents who claim to use tough love are downright abusive and looking for any excuse to strike their kid and take out their anger. There is hands off, tough love parenting that’s affective but learn the difference

As a mother with a child with Cerebral Palsy and is legally blind this made me tear up.. Because I know exactly how this woman feels... It took my daughter seven years to walk and when she falls down I would sit there and look at her the exact same way this lady did. She would feel her way around and find a way to pull herself up. The first time she took a step... Her very first steps I dropped to my knees and cried out thank you Jesus and I couldn't do nothing but cry because I was told she would never walk or talk. Now this year she will be 10! She is walking and talking plus she is a honor roll student... She isn't even in special education classes anymore. So as a mother with a child with a disability I commend this lady for her toughness her spirit and her courage... We as single mothers especially single mothers of child with a disability we have to tough and strong. It's not easy but somehow we find the strength to do it. I thought about what she said and I tell my baby almost the same thing. Just because you're disabled don't mean you're stupid and don't allow nobody to treat you like you are.

@r.harris5615 I can only imagine how incredibly proud you are for your daughter, that must be the greatest and most rewarding feeling in the world. I believe that you did the right thing by NOT coddling her and NOT automatically/immediately running to her side to pick her up whenever she would fall or trip which is most likely why she has come so far and accomplished so much at such a young age. God bless you and your daughter, y'all deserve all the happiness in the world. ❤️
