My Dad played this and sang it to me christmas day 8 days later he lost his fight against Cancer he was only 65 ,five months later my sister died suddenly at 46 two yrs ago lost my mum My only other family live in England This song means the world to me Jenny Guernsey 🇬🇬 ♥ ❤
this song reminds me of a girl i met on a train. We were both hours from our destination, it was night time and we couldn't sleep. We talked til the sun came up. Describing our likes or dislikes, arguing our favorite movies and music..Laughing.. Even debating on life and love. She was amazing. When the train arrived at her stop we exited holding hands and shared a kiss... I was weightless. She asked me to stay, to not get back on that train. Ill never forget her
You give your hand to me And then you say, "Hello." And I can hardly speak, My heart is beating so. And anyone can tell You think you know me well. Well, you don't know me. (no you don't know me) No you don't know the one Who dreams of you at night; And longs to kiss your lips And longs to hold you tight Oh I'm just a friend. That's all I've ever been. Cause you don't know me. (no you don't know me) For I never knew the art of making love, Though my heart aches with love for you. Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by. A chance that you might love me too. (love me too) You give your hand to me, And then you say, "Goodbye." I watched you walk away, Beside the lucky guy Oh, you'll never ever know The one who loved you so. Well, you don't know me (For I never knew the art of making love, ) (Though my heart aches with love for you. ) Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by. A chance that you might love me too. (love me too) Oh, you give your hand to me, And then you say, "Goodbye." I watched you walk away, Beside the lucky guy Oh, you'll never ever know The one who loved you so. Well, you don't know me (you don't love me, you don't know me)
My dad once said "Ray Charles- he could play piano...... not much of a singer, though". I had to burst out laughing. "dad, I think a lot of people would disagree with you about that"
In my opinion, Ray Charles, Elvis Pressley, and Johnny Cash are on a level by themselves when it comes to American Music, True American Legends and Treasures whose music shall live for enternity!
How can this song ever get a single thumbs down??? Goes to show some people don't have a clue on what good music is....What a lost generation of people these days.....
WIllie's cut is up to 5MILLION views. He was close friends with Cindy Walker, from Mah-hay-yah, Tx (Mexia), did an album of her songs. Video shows Willie on his bus, mellow, close to the end of his career. Emotional. And, he also recorded with Ray, who I think would have approved.
Ray's backup singers were perfect on I Can't Stop Loving You and Georgia, but they were the wrong 'sound' for this particular song. Their sound was more upbeat and cheerful than it should have been on this song. This is the type of song that needs a soulful, slow, serious sound rather than cheerfulness. This song is a man saying he loves a woman who doesn't realize that he loves her (happens to all of us!). She gives him a polite smile, her hand, and walks away with another man. She sees him in a harmless 'nice guy' way, and has no idea he's much 'deeper' than he appears - and that he loves her. Classic, beautiful, sad song that nails it for so-o-o many of us guys in life.
I came downstairs at 2:10 am, here in South Carolina, and this song just came into my mind and I started singing it. I had to "fire up" my laptop" so I could hear Ray Charles sing it the way it is suppose to be sang.
Sad to admit, but I was born in 1955,which means I am 61 yrs old,...but that's not even the sad part(LOL!!)...the sad part is that only since the past year or so have I truly begun to appreciate such beautiful music!!! I've discovered that I LOVE orchestra and the "crooners" of blues and soul!!! I believe part of the reason was because my life had been so chaotic and stressful , that I never felt I had the time to just STOP and let my heart and soul absorb the BEAUTY that artists such as this had to offer. Then developed stage 3 breast cancer a couple of yrs ago (completely cancer free as of now!) and it certainly did STOP me and made me re-evaluate , not just MY life...but LIFE in general!! Talk about "Blessings in Disguises!!!"
+Gloria Mary Haywood Ah, Miss Gloria, I hear you; I'm born in 1957 and it takes a loooong time, I think, to understand and APPRECIATE the finer things in life, right?
I defy anyone who considers themselves human to listen to this performance without a lump in their throat. This is Ray's song, no one else could ever do it justice. The plaintiveness and the anguish are simply overwhelming. For me, this is one of the all-time top 100 songs/performances. Pure genius.
This changes with me from week to week, but right now I feel this is the best song ever! I love this live version - I don't miss the schmaltzy backing vocals of the original, but I do like the strings of that version. This is SOUL!!
Ray is the Name of the Man who wrote this song , The one who sung it , the one who was once alive in the flesh but always alive in our hearts and hopefully in Heaven. ..Ray Charles you still touch people with your music even ! still ! to this Day and that's a real accomplishment . You inspire me because that's how I want to impact the world too ....so , long after I'm gone they will remember me and I can still inspire and touch people's hearts even long after God takes me home . Peace and God Bless to All of you readers of this comment and to the rest of the world and to Ray Charles and family.
True brother Ray was and still is a true inspiration but he did not write this epic song. It was legendary country artist Cindy Walker who penned this, along with hundreds of others. Credit where credit is due.
I heard this song while I was watching Groundhog Day on Tuesday. No one writes or performs anything close to the emotional quality of this anymore. Ray Charles is just amazing
Priceless clip. I was lucky enough to see him live three times in London uk . So many 60s uk bands admit they were heavily influenced by him. He was a bit of a rascal with the girls but tell who sings better --- I think no one.
Ray Charles the Master his entire life. This man can do more with one note than most performers can do with an entire song. Good when he was young, great when he was old. Only one "Genius". RC, "Brother Ray".
My Mum and Dad's song, tears flow as I see them doing the creep around our living room, empty as they were decorating, floorboards, stripped wall paper ankle deep and so much love.
Were you a young child at the time? I can so appreciate your response to the song now and am laughing at the way young children can so completely misinterpret things. When I was little, Eddie Fisher's "Oh, My Papa" was big. I very much associated it with my daddy. It wasn't until many years later that I learned the song expressed sadness at death of a beloved father.
Laurie Abramson ,I was probably between 10-12 and it was the early 1970s. I cry every time I hear it but no sadness just pure joy knowing how much they loved each other. Sadly my Dad passed 7 years go and my Mums broken heart will never mend.
I'm right there with you in terms of Oh, My Papa. Even though I later understood its meaning, I still associate it with my father when I was little more than a toddler. The memory makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I hope that your Mum has many smiles and much laughter to balance the sadness. It's clear that she and your Dad infinitely enriched each other's lives, you being the greatest evidence. I'm wishing you good things ahead.
We're going off on a completely different track, but you reminded me of a heart- and mind-opening poem, easy to find on the internet, that I think will be significant to you: "Epitaph" by Merrit Malloy. With that, I bid you "Adieu." All the best for the year ahead.
that guy, Sinatra, had a Amazing sense of things, Italians don't say something unless they mean it,, and of course i mean REAL Italians. (don't confuse us with gangsters)... Sinatra was the one who insisted Sammy Davis sing with him and they treat him right,, (lol, an offer you can't refuse). What he did for Sammy was Really honestly commendable. he didn't want his talent to be lost because back then,, im not even sure they could stay in the same hotel. people would be surprised to know how hard it was for black entertainers to get ANY real success back then. Sammy started as a Great Tap dancer with his father and uncle working black clubs.... Sammy influenced Michael Jacksons dancing alot. and even a step further,, Michael Jackson was the FIRST black singer to be 'allowed' on MTV,, crazy right..
People don't perform music this good any more and never will again I'm afraid and I wasn't even alive when he performed his song. There is nothing like the classics that if for damn sure.
I can;t speak... words can't decribe what Ray brings to this song... how can one man sing my pain... when I can't even describe it myself... it's not just the words... it's... the pain he sings,,,
You give your hand to me And then you say goodbye I watch you walk away Beside the lucky guy You'll never know The one who loves you so Because you don't know me. Now my heart is beating listening to this beautiful, and sad song.
I've been a lifelong sucker for this beautiful song, and Ray's versions have drawn me even closer to this song. Really love this live version as a counterpoint to his 'Modern Sounds' version. More personal and poignant, imo.
in the original vinyl, when he says "but you don't know me" for the first time in the song, it has a lot of power inside of it, and I think it really captures the essence of the song...its like, beautiful pain. ..."There is melancholy in the wind and sorrow in the grass" (Charles Kuralt).
this song has always comforted me during troubled times. It speaks to the soul and says everything for every person that has ever loved someone and has to realise that the person they love is fake and just another in a long line of dissapointments. Cheers to great music and true blues

What a fabulous singer and song. Hey Jordan, you're loving the wrong woman. And thanks to whoever posted this video. I loved this song when I was a teenager, way, way back when.

Ray Charles in Sao Paulo, Brazil '63 "Ô-Genio" A very rare 1963 performance in Sao Paulo/Brazil, recorded one day before his 33rd birthday on "Teatro Cultura Artística" at the "TV Excelsior". Beyond its historical significance, the video provides enormous pleasure.
Beautiful selection. Ray Charles have some music worth listening to even now. It lives on with his talents he was Blessed with. Ray your presence may not be visible but your spirit lives on in your music. Thanks for sharing your precious life with us.

The week that Mr. Charles' version was at #2 on the Top 100, the #1 record was "Sheila" by Tommy Roe...
This song touches me and breaks my heart at the same time, these days are gone and if the industry (notice I left out the word music) continues the way it is going then your kids kids probably wont even know what a piano sounds like, let alone heartfelt music like this. I'm exaggerating of course however it's not so far from the truth, make it your personal missions to keep real music and musicians alive.
Listen to how Ray pounds the chords on "I never knew the art of making love," then trills out on them when he reveals himself through the lyrics... so many things going on. Fu*king amazing. Expletive, yeah, but he's just the man, and he would be cool with the pithiness of that. God, you just want to listen over and over. The guy sang with his heart completely and utterly exposed. And, my God, that voice... kinda sends you back to diapers to start over again... Truly the man, for all time...
@malizzuski You know Ray Charles didn't write or originally perform this song, right? Unless I'm mistaken, he wasn't the 2nd, or 3rd person to do the song either, he was like the 6th or something.
