When Ray left New Orleans, he told a buddy of mine that he'd become friendly with to take whatever furniture he'd left behind. Fast forward nearly 20 years, and now I've got Ray's couch (lovingly referred to as the Kinks Kouch naturally). It's well worn and not the most comfortable thing in the world, but lord knows it's not going anywhere! Gonna be buried on that thing

COOL! I'd never get rid of it either! I have a storage bench I bought at a yard sale when I was about 13. It's nothing special, but I needed something to store my shoes in and it was perfect for that. Many years later, I happened to see the first part of a Mr. Rogers episode, and when he sat down on the bench to take his shoes off, I realized that bench was identical to the one I've owned for almost 50 years! His is in a museum now, but I like knowing I have something in common with that sweet, kind man! I also sat on my bench to change my shoes.

I'm 66, and have been a Kinks fan all my life, starting with "You Really Got Me". When I can't decide which one to play, I put on the Kronikles, a comment I wrote on a Kinks page, and Mick Avory liked. I saw them in 1974 perform the whole "Preservation" shebang, costume changes, projected backdrops and all. I have Ray's autograph. He frequented Malachi's, a bar on the upper west side in New York City. I wasn't there that night, but a friend got him to sign a matchbook cover to me. It was written with a felt pen and is slowly fading away to nothing.

I'm a HUGE Kinks fan! I've always said that they were just as important musically as The Beatles. It's a shame they never really got the credit they deserved in the 60's. I grew up on their 60's records, starting with "The Kinks Greatest Hits!" that my uncle gave me when I was about 6 years old. I still have it, his original mono copy, and it still plays pretty well considering I pretty much wore it out! Favorite songs? Days, Waterloo Sunset, Two Sisters, Most Exclusive Residence For Sale, House In The Country, and on and on... favorite album is Arthur, which slowly overtook Village Green for me over the years. Any excuse to talk about The Kinks is fine with me, Otis! Glad to hear you dig 'em as much as I do.

Interesting, as I read the titles of favorite Kinks songs shared here in the comments, I'm finding myself thinking, "Oh yeah! I love that song!" If a "bad" Kinks song exists, I sure as hell have never heard it! "Come Dancing" makes me cry, after I heard it was written for his big sister who died too young: "Come Dancing" is a tribute to the Davies' older sister Rene. Living in Canada with her reportedly abusive husband, the 31-year-old Rene was visiting her childhood home in Fortis Green in London at the time of Ray Davies' 13th birthday-21 June 1957-on which she surprised him with a gift of the Spanish guitar he had tried to persuade his parents to buy him. That evening, Rene, who had a weak heart as a result of a childhood bout of rheumatic fever, suffered a fatal heart attack while dancing at the Lyceum ballroom. Dammit, I'm crying again. In Ray's wonderful song, she gets to grow older and have children, and a husband who isn't cruel. I just lost my beloved big sister a month and a half ago. I can tell that Ray loved his sister very much, as I love mine.

"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" is one of my favourite Kinks songs, including almost every cover version over the years (by The Chesterfield Kings, Human Drama, The Chocolate Watchband, The Sacred Mushroom, Camper Van Beethoven...) and the way The Kinks' 1994 live version closes one of my favourite Sopranos episodes, "Cold Cuts". In Ray Davies' words, _"[the song] kind of sums up everything that we're about, The Kinks, because everybody's expecting us to do wonderful things and we mess it all up usually."_ --The canine friend looks adorable.

My father is currently suffering with advanced dementia. One of my favourite memories with him is taking him to see Ray Davies live. He would play The Kinks in the car and it was one of the few things we shared a passion for at the time. He had his music and I had mine but we both loved The Kinks. Being a Londoner they also feel like home in a strange kind of way. To have words sung in your own accent about the places you know… that’s special. I’m also seeing Tim O’Brien here soon. I very much enjoyed your videos with him. Have a great day 👍🏼

As I got older I came to appreciate more and more Davies' unique point of view. And ‚Strangers‘ was in fact written and performed by Dave Davies. I always liked the early Kinks take on bluesier stuff without realizing that Dave was the singer on ‚Milkcow Blues‘ or ‚Last of the steam- powered trains‘ for example. We know about Ray‘s songwriting genius (‚Waterloo Sunset‘ is my fave song ever along with ‚Dock of the Bay‘.) bur Dave is highly underrated as a great guitarist, songwriter and singer.

For me, the song that made me fall in love with the Kinks is "Apeman". When I was about 5 years old, I saw a Nat. Geo documentary about Jane Goodall, and she became my idol. I still have the scrapbook my sister helped me make with every pic of Jane and African animals I could find. I wanted to BE her when I grew up. I never got to go to Africa, but I do live off-grid in wilderness and I'm still fascinated by animals. I've lived this way 17 years and rarely see or speak to another human. For the past 8 years, I've enjoyed a friendship with ravens after I rescued an injured male. I let him fly once he healed but he chose to stick around, find a mate, and have multiple offspring. I knew nothing about ravens, had never seen one until I moved here. I had no idea how smart they are! I need to document my life with ravens, even though I don't think people will believe me. These birds have brought me gifts for about 6 years now, I keep them in a large bag. I mostly get small tools and machine parts, several antique doll arms (no legs or other parts, only arms!). They once watched me fixing a chicken coop using screws and large metal washers to hold the hardware cloth to the frame. Next day, there were 6 metal washers on the steps to my bedroom door. Hmmm, I must have forgotten them? No, the birds are still bringing me washers, and I use them too! Somebody somewhere is missing a bunch of washers, and I wonder what they would think if they knew who was taking them?😃 Anyway, living in the mountains has become my version of: "...But with the over-population and inflation and starvation And the crazy politicians I don't feel safe in this world no more I don't want to die in a nuclear war I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an apeman."

Totally agree that the Kinks are very underrated. Kinks did not get the opportunity to tour in the US as they ran into some kind of labor issue. Bill Graham had their manager escorted from the property at the US Festival in 83. I think the Dave/Ray kerfuffle held the band back big time. Ray’s solo theatrical performance/story telling was magical. Well played Otis as usual.

Wendell, coffee, nature, and so.e good stories. Happy Saturday, Otis! Being of a similar age, i think the first Kinks song i heard was "Lola". "You Really Got Me" was in there somewhere. Had to be junior high. I think The Kinks were influential in punk rock coming about. They had a raucous and raw sound with good energy. Then "Village Green" would pop up. Ray was a lyrical master. I have thought about recording video out in the world, but i dont want to get caught doing it. I understand the sentiment. Im glad you do get out and talk to the community youve built around you. I love The Kinks so much. Only got to see them live 1 time, in 1980. I currently reside a few blocks from where Ray was shot. It was near the corner of Burgundy st. and Esplanade av. just outside the French Quarter. Although he was only shot in the leg, the bullet hit an artery and the wound was pretty serious. While he was recuperating, he lived in an attic apartment on Esplanade. Also living in another apt. on the same property was Alex Chilton. The two struck up a friendship and Alex gave Ray an acoustic to help pass the time. The incident is documented in Ray's autobiography (brother Dave has not one but two autobios). The Kinks have such an extensive catalog it's hard to choose a favorite, but for me it might be "the village green preservation society. Just brilliant.

I love your idea of “favorite” instead of “best”…. Music, literature, visual art-- these are not competitive events. The only person qualified to judge the quality of a piece is the creator. We “connect” with a piece or not, and it is that connection or “favorite” status which contains the magic of art. Remember, Creation is the primary tool we use to fight Entropy in our Universe. “Create and bring beauty to our disordered World”- it is a godly act. Keep on creating Otis, what you do matters….

Thank you, the John Prine bass player video was very good. I grew up in Chicago & would see John, Bonnie & Steve around town in the early years. The Earl of Old Town was the spot.

Laying poolside with a transistor radio ready for another Beatles song when "You Really Got Me" burst out of tiny speaker sounding like no other. 1965 and I was hooked. So many twists and turns to Kinks career. Dave's underrated guitar, Ray's beautiful writing and both of them fighting. Their live shows were legendary.

Great video thanks, I have always loved the Kinks, since as a kid my older brother bought one of their records back in the early 70's. I was the singer in a couple of bands and I loved singing, "You really got me" Thanks from Gisborne New Zealand

My personal feeling to your situation is try not to get upset over someone walking up on you when you’re doing a video. You’re doing something noble by speaking to us about things we love to hear. This is your time and business, do what you love, and THANK YOU Otis. I’m a new fan man.

Hi Otis, nice to meet you. I’m guessing you’re about my age. I am 67. Love the kinks, man. Great stories. Yes, had knowledge of Ray’s experience but still great to hear it from you Otis. Autumn Almanac is one of my favourites, Deadend Street, Mr. Pleasant, and yeah, Ape Man still have to sing that whenever I hear it. There’s so many songs though Otis. My family ( wife and daughter) have moved from down south of Australia to live in the tropics. So sick of cold winters and blistering summers. We really have felt so much better living here in the far north of Queensland. Beautiful place and weather. Otis, will look forward to being more in touch with your channel sir. Cheers Colin.

Too many great songs. Such a great writer. Got to see Ray play a solo show years back and Dave as well. One For The Road is one of my all time fave live albums. As you mentioned, they don’t get near the credit they deserve, but one of the greatest bands of their time. Thanks Otis!😎

On 3 Sep 1999, I attended a Good Morning America TV show performance in Central Park by Tori Amos and her band. After the GMA, I walked past the Strawberry Fields memorial, then north onto the block past the Dakota to find a pay phone to call in a report to Michael for the canonical fan site, known as the Dent. I saw someone walk up behind me right as I started talking on the phone. I turned to look to see what was going on. Ray Davies of the Kinks was standing there holding a Krispy Kreme bag at waist level. He’s quite tall. He seemed to want to use the phone. I whispered into the phone on Michael’s voicemail: “Ray Davies just walked up behind me and stopped. He’s holding a Krispy Kreme bag.” He turned around after a minute or so and walked into the Starbucks behind us. Only in New York.

I grew up in Oklahoma and I can tell you for certain….. there are places in the sticks, far, far removed from town where the silence is deafening. And you’re correct. It’s good for the soul. A couple of friends and I took three days of supplies, three canoes and took off down the Buffalo River in Arkansas. We pulled over at the end of each day and pitched our tents, cooked dinner, and crawled into our sleeping bags. It’s so quiet your ears will ring. Just thought I’d share.

I was making a record in Nashville in 06 or 07 with some people I'm sure you know, Otis (Jacques played on it!). And they said a friend named Ray was gonna come over to borrow something. So this guy came over and they talked for a bit and the name Ray was mentioned quite a bit and it confused the hell out of me. It turned out the friend was Ray Kennedy (and I loved him from his work with Steve Earle) and he was just cutting a record with Ray Davies at his studio. Only in Nashville.

“Too much on my mind” is my favorite kinks song. But every time I hear “Days” or “Celluloid Heroes” I can’t fight back some tears…I ‘got’ the Beatles, but I didn’t ‘feel’ until I dove headfirst into the Kinks. To me, as an ardent Anglophile, The Kinks and The Fall stand towering above the pack of truly great 20th century British bands into the altitude of truly timeless art.

Sunny Afternoon is a favorite, reminds me of sitting on the ground, leaning against a tree on Hawthorne Boulevard in Salem, Massachusetts. I was looking at a Statue of Nathaniel Hathorne when the Kinks came on. It was a hot sunny afternoon in 1964 or 65. I always had a decent transistor radio or the car window open when I sat there. Pleasant memories....

I had friends who were big Kinks fans. I dug them, but for some reason, I heard them enough on the radio and friends houses, where I didn't feel the need to buy any of their albums (although I did buy "Sleepwalker" later on.) Victoria, Waterloo Sunset are both wonderful songs. I believe Ray Davies once said that "Victoria" (or maybe "Waterloo Sunset") was like a "family song?" that the Davies enjoyed privately first? The Big Star boys were all big Kinks fans. Favorite Kinks song, "Till The End of the Day." Thanks Otis.

I love the cheese on Come Dancing. Best cheesy song out there. Try not to hum it after listening to it. I was in Sante Fe 25 years ago and it was raining all day. It never rains in Sante Fe. I bought a $13 rain coat at Kmart. Zipper broke last week; sad day. I walked 3 different dogs in that coat

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), very familiar. I live deep in the woods in the Pacific NW, in the Oregon Coast Range to be exact. We live on several dozen secluded acres with my labrador dogs and my wives horses and donkeys and her crazy pig. We wake up and look out the kitchen to see fog shrouding the hills. Often when it's getting dark, the fog is so thick, it creeps into the woods and covers the tree canopy. I LOVE IT. After my family relocated to Arizona from Chicago, I experienced constant SUN and hated it. Indeed, it made me depressed. It was like living in a reptile cage -- sun shining constantly. Bizarre stuff. Been in the Pacific NW for 30-some years now, and man, walking my dogs through the woods on a cold, foggy day with the sound of water moving briskly through creeks and waterfalls makes me feel alive! Also creative. I do so much good work in this climate.

Your Carhartt coat still looks like new. I loved the John Prine video. I've been a huge Kinks fan since the early 60s when they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show.. I am the proud owner of 13 different Kinks albums and trying to pick my favorite is a tough call. I absolutely love Celluloid Heroes though. Good to see Wendall and Amy's feet and good arm on throwing Wendall the ball !

Happy New Year Otis and Amy! Great episode. I never heard about Ray getting shot. But growing up in the 70's the Kinks were always part of the music scene. And later on always hearing about the brotherly feud. A great song by the Kinks is "Sunny Afternoon". Love that one. Apeman is also great. For some reason it reminds me of McCartneys Mother Natures Son. Its funny that you mention the coat because as soon as the vid started I said to myself it looks like Otis got a new coat for Christmas. LOL.
