So yes and no. This doesn't act like a compressor because it doesn't respond to level, it responds to distance. So you level only gets adjusted when your physical distance moves. In a live setting, mute by distance will be important to avoid additional feedback. There is no feedback or room ambience suppression since this is still an analog signal path (no DSP processing). If you back up, you will get more room sound with any microphone.

RAY's AURA feature is useful for all types of vocal recording. It simply compensates for your distance from the microphone, so it sounds like you are always in the sweet spot. But it doesn't compress you natural dynamics.

There is no noise reduction software since this is an analog signal path microphone. The mute function is either on or off. However, the cardioid polar pattern is very consistent and if you record at a close proximity it will be very effective at rejecting background noise.

@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio 2 месяца назад
Yes, your level won't decrease if you back up--it will compensate so it sounds like your singing from the same distance. Unless you turn off AURA and then obviously it acts like a normal mic. But the benefit is that when you back up to belt a note, you're tone won't get thin, the low end will be consistent even though you are further away.

@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio Месяц назад
Yes, it is still an analog microphone but it has a microcontroller that rides the gain based on the distance of the closest object. The range is about 40 inches away. Ideally you want one microphone per person. Because if you have 2 people talking into it, it will only adapt to whoever is standing closer at a given moment so you wouldn't really get the benefit of AURA

I need this! 💸💸💸 If those are the same shock mount and pop filter of the LCT 440 PURE, I recently found an issue: the pop filter can't be reversed! Sometimes it's more convenient to flip the mic 180° in the shock mount, sort of using it in the «back» position, but the pop filter won't stay due to a couple of coupling pins with the shock mount, forcing it to only be properly used in the «front» position.
@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio 2 месяца назад
Hi there and thanks for your comment. What scenario makes you use the mic reversed in the shock mount?
@riangarianga
@riangarianga 2 месяца назад
@@LEWITT-audio Thank you for replying! For example I use it for videoconferencing, attached to a table stand. The table doesn't have too much free space if I want to be near the laptop I use, so I ended up either too close to the mic, either too far from the laptop. So I tried mounting the mic+shock backwards, and suddenly I could be more comfortably closer to the laptop, while keeping a correct distance from the mic. But the pop filter wouldn't seat properly. I know it's a very particular case, but it could probably be easily reviewed in further versions, since there's no apparent reason (at least to me) for those coupling pins limiting the pop filter to be mounted only in the front position, of limiting the use of the shock mount to one position.

So.. is it just a hardware compressor (noting the increase room tone as she moved off the mic) and noise gate or does it operate in a novel way?
@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio 2 месяца назад
There is no compression happening. This is based on physical distance to the mic, not level. So you won't get the timing artifacts of a noise gate and compressor and you aren't changing the micro dynamics of the audio. It continually adjusts your level and tone according to your distance from the mic and gives you a balanced sound as if you're always standing right in the sweet spot.

But a good ear can pick up the self noise being gained up the further you move away from the microphone... in this demonstration you can hear it. I have heard this on several demonstrations now.... pity, as the concept is actually a brilliant idea. Keep up the development Mr Lewitt. This is impressive all the same.
@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio 2 месяца назад
The self noise (8dB A) on this mic is very low. More likely your hearing the ambience/noise of room increase--at least that's the more obvious artifact. With any microphone, as you back up from it you will pickup more room ambience relative to the signal your are recording. The only difference is that with traditional microphones you would be adjusting the level in mixing (and hearing the ambience come up with it). For best results, you should avoid pushing it to it's maximum range (which is about 40 inches).

@@LEWITT-audio Is it true that the mute function also works as some sort of noise reduction feature, if the user wants to eliminate the voices of other noisy people who are at a distance from the mic? And when will a long form mic (like MTP W950) be available using the same tech?
@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio 2 месяца назад
Mute by distance is a great way to attenuate the signal when you aren't in speaking like in a podcast or a livestream, but it doesn't remove other noise form the signal when the mic is unmuted. Similar to a noise gate it is either open or closed, but unlike a noise gate it's based on distance and not level.

@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff 2 месяца назад
@@LEWITT-audio That's fucked up. You're the brand and your responses shouldn't be so critical just because you don't agree with the opinion being given of your product. They're just expressing their initial reaction to it and if you can't handle simple criticism, then you don't demonstrate you are a mic brand that understands the diverse tastes of the audience. BTW, I agree, this mic sounds harsh and has no midrange. This is not a pro-level mic. (EDIT: Lewitt had originally posted a response to the original comment, then wisely deleted it. Their response to @vidalbk2325 was: "Nice comment, but you sound harsh and snobby". )
@riangarianga
@riangarianga 2 месяца назад
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Without having been able to read the response you're referring to, I think in this short, so very non-conclusive sample, it sounds quite similar to the LCT 440, of which many of us love its shiny high end. Some people preferring the Shure SM7 call it «harsh», while those who like the LCT 440 would feel the SM7 is like under a blanket; just a matter of taste. From a technical perspective you can always EQ out the highs on the Lewitt, but you can't add back the missing highs to mics like the SM7. Different mics are different tools for different purposes, and it's nice to have many tools to choose from and fit our task. However, you might be misled to think this mic sounds harsh without midrange at a distance, but that's normal: with distance in a room you lose the the low end and the low mids. It's an acoustic effect: highs get weird when close micing while lows stay correct, but lows get diffused with distance, while highs get more precise and true. As I recently learned, mixing both distances spliced at a certain frequency is a technique to obtain a decent frequency response curve when a proper anechoic chamber can't be used. This mic can't do that splicing because the source can only be at a point in space at a time, so sound quality will vary with distance, and sometimes you'll feel it's harsh, sometimes it will be boomy; regular mic usage doesn't change.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff

@riangarianga
@riangarianga 2 месяца назад
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I must agree it wouldn't be the wisest comment from a branding perspective in our modern world, but I can't say I disagree with it 😂: you need to explain when, how and why it «sounds harsh and grainy» if you want to use those absolute terms (I find it impossible after watching a short video where there was only speech as a sample, not even a note was sung). I'm not sure why you felt the need to take a screenshot, though, like you're thinking about starting action in court or something. It's just a bleeping comment. I'm a guitarist and I'm used to hear worst things from Paul Reed Smith since forever, the man who is his own brand, and nobody cares either, he still charges a lot for USA-made products (stating its components almost have magical properties -without evidence) and sells a lot overall.

When you stepped away from the microphone the audio quality changed quite a lot, it sounded like you were in an empty echoy room. 😯

That happens with any microphone in a room. Just inescapable physics of sound. But instead of automating the level and tone during mixing for an inconsistent performance... RAY does it for you and saves a lot of work. Especially in the podcasting world.

@@LEWITT-audio I guess the way to fix that issue could probably be done with ML, but question if that's even desirable or not. Nevertheless, you do have an interesting microphone, I wonder how much it'll cost in the EU, if we'll even be able to get it. 😅

We don't have a trade in program -- we also don't sell direct so it would be up to whatever retailer you bought from.

The trend of huge radio mics being on video is dumb AF. They should not be visible.
