A short review of the Ray Mears Folding Buck Saw, I’ve been using it for about a year, on probably 30 nights out in the woods. So far I’m impressed by it, and with a good axe my firewood collecting has become so much easier. I also got myself a wood burning stove this year so it made fuel preparation so much more organized. It’s light enough to take on canoe trips, and it folds down good enough to fit on or in your basic pack.

I like that the saw is 100% intact all the time. So many of these saws have nuts and bolts you need to undo and remove to assemble. Those bits are bound to get lost and at the worst possible time.

"All in all" that was a good overview and demonstration, but the absurdity of the price was a bit understated.

It's a classic design, easy to make yourself. A lot of bushcrafters carry the blade only because they can fabricate the frame from a stick

You fit the tenons of the stretcher into the mortises of the handles, then tension the cord with the toggle... or bits of wood works :)

Great demonstration. I would consider purchasing both the axe and the saw, but neither link worked for me.

I have owned and used the ray mears buck saw now for 3 years and I have all the same things to say about it as you did here-in : 1) The screws seem thin and they will work harden and snap. 2) The blade is actually too flimsy and weak and even when correctly tensioned it is still wobbly with careful and slow use. It needs a more sturdy blade. 3) It's over priced. 4) The blade sticks into your hands when assembling and disassembling. 5) It's not ergonomic and your hands, wrists, arms and shoulders soon get sore. 6) The blade is only for green wood which defeats the purpose of harvesting fire wood. Having said that, I use my Laplander and Ray Mears Sheath all the time and it's a great bit of kit. As for the saw, I am not impressed and it is left behind in preference to a chain saw. NB : I am a forest ranger and live 100% in the nature. I try to use the buck saw but it never is the most efficient tool.

Yeah I echo all of that Ade Larsen, I’ve had the saw for a good bit now and use it a lot on more permanent camp sights, but I wouldn’t recommend this saw now. I also notice it swells a lot when wet making it impossible sometimes to fold up. And in Scotland that’s unavoidable. I'm actually thinking of now buying the Boreal 21 Saw with Sidney All Purpose Blade. I hear very good things about it and it shouldn’t have any of the problems the wooden one has. From a traditionalist point of view it’s a good saw. But it could have been a lot better. It’s as if its been made from the diagram out of an old book or something, rather than for something that would actually be used all of the time. I buy a lot of kit from Ray Mears sight mostly because it’s such a reliable UK company, but the reviews are not to be trusted in my opinion. There left by people who are super fans and 5 star everything regardless of the true functionality of the kit.

World Survivalist 100% agree good Sir. One bit of Ray Mears kit I cherish is the leather sheath for my Laplander. It protects my little saw (I have two of them) and keeps it protected and in good condition. As a matter of course, I must research another saw. I really have little idea about what is out there however I did see an Australian 4wd you tube channel showing them using this amazing saw that looked like an over-sized Laplander with a pole attached and I thought "wow, that actually works". In my role as forest ranger and conservation manager I use tools such as these to clear tracks of fallen trees and branches which are either too big to drive over or would scratch / damage the vehicle. Anyway, I must try to find the "Giant Laplander" again and source it. Thanks for taking the time, cheers. Ade

Try a Silky Katana. It cuts faster, will cut much thicker things, and simply unfolds like a pocketknife.
@WorldSurvivalist
@WorldSurvivalist 8 лет назад
Silky Katana do look ok, its basically a big bahco laplander by the looks of it. I get the feeling that the blades would be harder to transport on long trips, and if you brake the attachment point it would be very had to fix. You would probably end up making a fixed blade buck saw in that case. Not sure. have you tried both over a period of time ?

Looks well made enough, but that price is definitely for Ray Mears' name.
@WorldSurvivalist

I hear what you’re saying, I’m very aware of a celebrity putting a name to something to inflate the price. But I have to admit; for the most part on Ray Mears site they tend to sell things at the full RRP and no more. So many times I’ve seen something I wonted on his site and thought, I’m not paying that, clothing is a big one, But after hours of research and looking around end up buying it from his site because it turned out to be worth the money. But I admit in this case, I think this saw is very overpriced.

Love watching ray mears. But have found anything with his name on it has a huge price. . Basically your paying for the name not the product. . I can all most make a promise that the price of materials don't match the . And £70 for a pouch is ridiculous. With a little bit of thought anyone could make the saw and pouch. For about 30 to 40 pounds. And pick up a good axe from good money . I don't know how much now but remember years ago a Ray mears weekend cost a small fortune. Something I wasn't prepared to pay .
@WorldSurvivalist
@WorldSurvivalist 3 года назад
Yeah, I remember looking at the cost of a walk in the woods with him, clearly, at some point, you can decide to fully monetise the celebrity you have. To be honest, I don't think that's a bad thing, I may have done the same. I also wasn't prepared to pay, but then it wast for people like me.
