Raymarine Quantum 2 doppler radar installation and alignment

In this video I install a Raymarine Quantum 2 doppler radar into my steel trawler Renko. Once the unit is installed I need to align it to the boat's heading. I also need to calibrate the EV1 and AR200 electronic compasses to determine the deviation caused by the steel hull of the boat on each heading.

Late to this one, but glad I saw it. Could have missed the welding safety tips. Like holding the workpiece with bare feet, nice! Just got back from watching SailGP in Plymouth. As the Aussies crossed the line, I said something like, 'how come the Aussies can be losing at any sport and they stick in there, you don't even notice them in the pack, and they still bloody win in the end' and the guy next to us on the boat spoke for the first time to explain in his Sydney accent that it was to do with 'a never say die attitude'. TBH served me right and the guy managed to keep a straight face. Was all he said. All day. So I also got to meet the world's only quiet Aussie as well as losing to you lot. Again..... Maybe our guys had the sail equivalent of a Cummins on board...

Now, I dunno much about radar, but I do know what you mean when you say it's handy when the slag falls off of it's own accord. Uncle Cosmo would often say the same thing. There was a time when we were all out on the Unclenching III with Cosmo's mate Dodgy Sheila fishing for Ugly Grubblers because they'd planned a barebeque but didn't have any money for sausages. Anyhoo, it was meant to be all calm and flat the next few days but you know what it's like with weatherboys and it can't come as s surprise it all got a little bit heavey. Anyway, never did like to pry into Cosmo's business but it seems there was some kind of trouble brewing, I seem to recall one of them had borrowed the other's razer, for a delicate bit of pointing, and someone kept shouting that Sheila shouldn't keep putting peas in the bait barrel, and Cosmo was getting a wee bit cross. I recall we had a thing with a pelican that landed on the boat which was intent on eating Anti-MoMo's Mexican chicken footlong sarnies and only off-pissed when Cosmo twatted it with a six hundred psi nitrogen tank he used to keep track of his copy of TV Week. I'm losing track, sorry about that, but the thing was when we were motoring back to Bangawallilalalol the water got a little bit frisky, and we popped up on top of a bit of a Fair Wanger when Dodgy Shelia was trying to tie a 'The Wiggles' helium ballon to her shoe and just went arse over tit and bounced off the gunnels. I was expecting we'd heel to and fish her out but Cosmo was quite sure that she'd gone in of her own accord and would, therefore, have to bloody swim home. She did look like a bit of a walrus, if I'm not being too unkind, but, whilst we never saw her again, it's for damn sure Cosmo found that quite handy.

It still amazes me that the average boater has equipment like this within their grasp where as in the past it was only for the big corporate guys on big ships. It's pricey but since it's modular you can add to the system over time. Raymarine makes a great product that makes life easier and safer for everyone on a boat.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 3 года назад
The technology has come a long way. iPhones have more processing power than old super computers. You are dead right in that you can keep adding bits to the navigation system. Once you have the base MFD everything else just plugs in making it better and better with time.

Thanks for an informative vid. I am considering installing a small radar unit on our 1/2 cabin as we will primarily be using the boat on Lake Ontario (one if the Great Lakes here in the United States). Alot of people I have talked with have said that a radar on a vessel under 25 feet is basically a 'toy' and a waste of money, but for the amount of time we will be on the lake, a considerable amount of it at night, safety, ect, I feel it's worth the investment.
@DangarMarine

I don’t think the size of the boat matters at all, it is more about whether you are or at night or in fog. If so, a radar is worth it’s weigh in gold.

It's probably common sense but what is the reason for docking stern first? is it just the position of the boarding area with reference to the dock or something more nautical? I feel that it would be easier handling to dock bow first and back out into the lane when departing? I've never hung out much in a marina I usually trailer my little boat.

Radars are really important pieces of equipment for night passages or heavy fog. You'll never be without it once you've had one.

@@DangarMarine wow, definitely worth it if you need, it and you do out on Open water but I don't think I could justify that for a lake with just a 1200 miles of shoreline. Keep having fun and sending videos.

Well you learn something everyday. Today many things about your installation, seriously impressive setup. Envy! I also learned that you can use hoof dressing (stockholm tar) for stopping bolts sticking/rusting in wet conditions. Wow, I'll have to try that, I always just used it for dressing horse hooves, anti-fungal etc. from a contributor, Bob Bebbington, below. Great day - time for a snooze ....

dont put the camera upside down. water collects and will rust it out in a year.

If it wasn't meant to be mounted that way the Raymarine text wouldn't be oriented the way it is.

Since the labels were the right way up I'd say it was meant to be mounted that way.

Yes, it is designed to go either way, but this is actually the more protected way.

@@DangarMarine dude....no it isnt. its designed to be in a sealed housing when its upside down not exposed to the elements like in your (and my) case. oh well, be seeing you post the OMG my camera rusted out after a year video....dont say i ddnt warn ya.

Just found your channel on the engine battle - hilarious!! - but this is really cool - So does that Raymarine camera act as an updated FLIR? it appears to be a FLIR type camera but matched with the system. FLIR are awesome for picking up crab pots :) - but FLIR's are very expensive... it would seem this is the better of the two? I am guessing you can have it act separately on its own without the AR? And what is the AR part - as it appears to showing you what is there - just with brackets and names?
