In this video I start with raw stock and forge and grind and make a complete straight razor, then I shave with it to show how it works. I show most all of the steps that are involved in the manufacturing process. I cover forging, grinding, scale making and pinning.

I fell upon this video by chance. I am absolutely overjoyed that I was fortunate to come across this channel and it's content. I watched this in it's entirety and have the utmost respect for this man's craft. I fell in love with straight razors in 2015 during my deployment and seeing this blade made from scratch with such care and attention to detail is inspiring. What a peaceful, informative and artistic way to present your work to the world. Thank you for this. I don't think I've ever had such an easy time subscribing to a channel. 😊👍

@@lewisrazors since I didn't have easy access to 5/16 inch anything steel, I would have had to do some forge welding to get a peice thick enough. May as well do a pattern weld if I am going to be forge welding already anyways. I could never have imagined how difficult and time consuming this would be. I've gone through about three wooden straight razors trying to understand the edge profile a bit better, but I seem to keep burning through as I get it thin enough.

We have very similar stories, about the same age, and about the same past experience with a razor. I had a straight razor while attending trade school, used it for a while, but could never get it sharp again. I came back to straight razors years later. Thank you for your thoughts.
@bigfootingermany
@bigfootingermany 5 лет назад
omally thomas I'm 55 now too, but back in my mid 40's I got really sick and tired of paying high prices for multi blade inserts for modern razors. Even at Costco, $20 for 4 cartridges was just ridiculous. I looked around online and saw some pretty high prices for modern versions of straight razors and then landed on eBay and found some pretty good deals on older ones from around the 1920's and 30's. Picked one up for about $30, stropped it and went to work. I was a pretty bloody mess by the end of the whole thing, but something I noticed right away was that a nick didn't hurt as much and they healed extremely quick. After a few rounds with my new oddity I got pretty good with it. The key was prepping the face before hand, and keeping the angle correct. I now collect straight razors, preferably vintage ones, although I do have a few modern ones also. Living in Germany, I have access to some of the finest razors mass produced today. Solingen vs Sheffield ... Solingen is more flexible and glides across the skin following the curves and such. Sheffield has almost no flex at all and forces the skin to get out of the way or get lopped off. I prefer Solingen ;) One thing for sure about using a straight razor vs modern cartridge razors. You get a tremendously closer shave from a Straight, in fact it erases a good 10 years of age right off. Something about having a shave so close that no baby's bottom can compare! I hope you get back to doing things the old way. Even if you pay a couple hundred bucks on a new high grade modern razor, it will pay for itself within a few months. And the old soap in a mug and brush? Lasts so long you'll wonder why you ever picked up an aerosol can. Good luck with it !! Bob in Germany

+John J I am a fan of paste for the final little bit. I like the blade really sharp before using the paste a little to add a comfort/smoothness to a blade. I do not like it when paste are used a crutch to get a blade sharp, but I do like the effect of some paste on an already sharp blade. Lews it seems to me the razor meets too much resistance going against the beards!!! I notice you put a certain amount of pressure to win the resistance of the grain!! Is this normal? It seems to me the razor is not enough sharped!!!! at all. I make a shave 10 days of growth with my poor Parker Srx armed with kai blade!! No cuts, no irritations, resistance very small practically inexistent! Should you improve your blade??? I'm interested but the dimostration of the razor working was deludent! Are straight razors so few performing? It seems more a pulling of beards! When I use kai it cuts all like butter but here things go different too much! Don't you agree?

It's definitely not boring watching all the processes... loved every bit of the video down to sponge bob brush and shave....black smiths and artisans like yourself are a dying breed. You are alchemists from my point of view and I love how you've described every bit of the process. I now have a greater appreciation of the work that goes into producing a hand made razor. Well scripted and edited. 😁👍🏻🇦🇺

Beautiful craftsmenship, it was a pleasure to watch! I am a craftsmen myself (a sculptor and taxidermist) and one year ago I forged my first knife. Not on your level yet, but it's a pleasure to work with different materials and create beautiful forms. It's great to see masters at work!

I wish I had the hand eye coordination to work with different media. The good thing about metal work for me is that is goes so slow I have time to correct. Thank you for your comment.

@@lewisrazors Based on your smithwork, I'm verry sure, you have the hand-eye coordination! At first I thought the blade protection is made of Mouflon horn or Antelope horn, and was surprised it's actualy wood. Sculpting, carving and forging are different in one way, but also similar at the same time in another way. You should try it, if you realy want to! And thanks for your reply too!

Very beautiful work and nice video! Thank you for sharing! little technical question though: how do you figure out where to drill the hole on the tang at the beginning? Many thanks in advance for your time.
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 8 лет назад
I hold the razor blank like I would when I would be shaving it and see the spacing of my fingers to figure out where to put the hole. The scales of the razor will be between my fingers when the razor is open.

love the dedication and the perfectionism and attention to detail you take with ur knife. if im not wrong i think you said this was 0-1 Tool steel. i was surprised. i would think you would use some fancy carbon steel like 1095 or something but you showed that you dont need that to make a beautiful and very well made razor that works very well. Great job
