Wonderful video, Charlie! I first learned of you from your interview on the Moustache and Blade podcast, and then quite by accident stumbled on this a few days later. I was only going to watch part of it, but then couldn't turn it off. It's truly amazing to watch such a skilled craftsman do his work, and even better, to explain it step by step. And then seeing you actually shave with it was the frosting on the cake. Your razors are absolutely beautiful and truly unique. Thank you for sharing how you make them.

I randomly found this video on youtube and opened it out of pure curiosity. Then I saw that the video was 1 hour long and thought that I'd just skip through a little... I ended up watching the whole video in one go. Your narrating, your editing with the different viewing angles, the craftsmanship, it was all almost perfect. Your way of making videos is very captivating (and also very relaxing). Thank you for this very nice video and keep them coming :)

Lewis i come on here to watch vids on how to make moulds, then i seen yours and couldnt wait to get to it and see what it was like. AMAZING, thank you so very much for making it, from start to finish, awesome, its the best 1hr i have spend on this computer in a long long time. The fact you talk you way through it also makes it even more interesting, interaction is wonderful.i used to have a bengal and german gotta, but never used them for shaving, was16 then, now 51 and finding that the junk they sell, are useless.once again thank you it will be some thing that i can refer back to once i start up trying my hand at it... 10 out 10...

I have never made a straight razor by way of forging, you do a very excellent job of explaining every step of the process, most I have done was making a knife for my brother through grinding it was made from a file, I ground it while it was still hard and tempered it on the kitchen stove burner, watched the color run then quenched it in 30-W motor oil, it was razor sharp, he took it up to a friend who also made knifes and was showing it to him, there was another friend who had his 16 year old son along he did not believe it was razor sharp, and actually put pressure on it with his thumb, it cut him to the bone, left a impression on him his dad said "maybe you will listen to your elders when they say be careful it is sharp"
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 9 лет назад
Anuel Jackson I made a few razors from files, where is ground out the razor. I forge some and also do stock removal, I change it up. I have also been young and strupid and not payed attention about sharp blades, Thanks for commenting.
@anueljackson42
@anueljackson42 9 лет назад
yes I to was, but it took just once being cut by my dad's pocket knife, it was surprising but it did not scare me, in fact I asked my dad to show me how he had got his knife so sharp, and he showed me how to sharpen my own knife a boy scout pattern bought at a local farm store, it was not a quality steel blade but he taught me to tell by the feel of the blade being dragged over the stone on the quality of the steel, I later up graded my knife to a Swiss Army style, it had better quality steel that would hold an edge, my hunting knifes are all Buck's and they are easy to sharpen and hold an edge well. Keep up the good work on the videos, I have one question do you know what the metal composition that a cat track is made of I seen a few on the side of the road and picked them up they seem to be made of very hard carbon steel, I am assuming this because they will rust after being polished by there use in gravel and sand.

+david graham Thank you for your feedback on the video. It is good to hear you find it interesting and engaging. That is a good idea for texturing. Making random patterns is a hard thing for me. I want to line everything up in rows. Slow and careful is way to hone. It is one of those things where technique matters. You would not cut yourself, it is human nature to stop cutting when you cut your self. I have had nicks with a striaght razor but never had a serious cut from shaving. I have cut my self while making razor though. Spinning wheels and razor require all my attention.

Shayde Mohr I am glad that there was some helpful tips in the video. I would like to see the blades you come up with, making blades is a great hobby. Sometimes I like to shave with thinner blades also. I like to swtich it up, big Sheffield wedges, full hollow 5/8s, I like to use a variety of blades while shaving. Razors are like pringles you can not have just one.

@MegaHayran
@MegaHayran 10 лет назад
i am not suggesting that barber shops use or should 15 dollar gillettes. i'm just comparing the performance and overall the experience i would gained of the handmade razor if i used one with a gillette; based on my past experiences, my own thoughts and the impression i gained of the razor on the video. There is no reason for all you people to get such mad at me. You can side with the video owner that's fine; but non of you people who respond ask yourselves "how you good would you be if you were using this razor instead of one that you bought at the mall."

+raulpisti raul DE razors tend to be the cheapest shaving method over time. Although finding a reliable handle can be difficult or pricey, the blades themselves cost less than 50 cents each. After all shaving with DE razors works great for men who are prone to ingrown hairs, since the single blade does not cut as closely to the skin because DE razors stay extremely sharp for optimal shaving for longer periods of time.

Been using a Lewis razor since around 2011-2012. Just found this video. The craftsmanship is phenomenal. I've had and have other razors made by large manufacturers that I also will use, mainly out of town. My Lewis is my everyday razor though, it just feels right in my hand. I don't even know if you can still buy these but if you can, it's worth the money.

THIS IS by far thee best video I have ever sat thru because it was very interesting. When I was younger my mom gave me an electric shaver to shave with in the beginning, she didn't want me to cut myself at all.. When I found out that with a blade I could get super slick & girl loved that more than a little stubble, I have saved with a blade ever since, In the military you had to shave with a blade because there wasn't any electric in the jungles in Vietnam. I started shaving with a str8 razor about 12 years ago & there is nothing at all like it now, Thank you for explaining everything as you went along with your very informative video, I a going to try my hand at making one for myself as I am a certified Journeyman Machinist & Tool Maker too boot. Thank You sir for a very nice & well thought out video...

I was bored tonight and I ended up watching you forge a beautiful blade for an hour. There are few things I want to do in life but forging stuff is high up there. Maybe one day I'll get to that... maybe. This was most definitely the best use of 1 hour of my time so far this week.

this is an art . fine and at its best level . with perfection . i knew a guy who sold hand made razors and his dad made them. true talent and its no joke. luved it . i actual saw all 1 hour video . it takes alot by heart n hand to make such a piece. its very rare to find people who can make such solid hand made artifacts in this modern disposable product system. its a beauty.

That first shave with a work of art you've created must have a great deal of satisfaction in it. Wonderful video, thanks. I remember the first time I shaved with a straight edge, and as I was working my neck, the razor's nickname, "cutthroat" kept coming to mind. Woke me up better than a cup of strong coffee that morning! I still love the look and feel of a straight razor even though I stopped shaving two years ago. I may have to get a good razor and start again!
