I was at Romsey in 87’ to see Masami win. Hugely impressive. Cat builds were very tricky, used to take me all Saturday afternoon to strip and clean it prior to race day on Sunday but done properly there was little to touch one and the drive chain was very efficient. The diff’s were a pig to keep adjusted though. The tyres were very good too compared to what other cars had. Good times!

😅This is a glimpse into the future, where the people who grew up with these cars are dead and the next generation doesn’t have complete knowledge of them. Thanks for the video

Those connectors were the OG Deans connectors. That was the most popular connector at the tracks I raced at in the Northeast USA at the time. I love these videos, thanks for putting them together!

Thanks for the plug again 😘 Interesting that the shocks didn’t have diaphragms in and used an o ring instead.. also it’s not an XLS it’s an XL which hop ups 😉 XLS came out after the worlds.

Wonderful. I remember the short wheel base and I brought the xls and raced the nationals. Came second to Jason Varley in modified, then we called the top class superclass. When Cecil gave masami his cat xls masami's father promised not to touch or change anything on the car. Fantastic memories. I made my own chassis to fit saddle pack batteries...

My first Schumacher was the CAT XL in '87 and I wanted it because Masami won the worlds with it lol Plus you didn't see them much in the states at the time so I found that pretty cool. Not so cool was getting parts for it, especially having to replace the undertray quite a few times before my dad suggested using duct tape along the length of it for a bit of extra protection, worked like a charm. Loved that car, love my L1R and LD3 as well, still making great stuff!

Another great video thanks! Could the motor have been 2x15t?

I think the wing wires are supposed to be fixed behind the rear suspension strap rather than the shock mount. Other pictures of this actual car have it that way and so does the instruction manual for the rerelease.

I think some cars are best left in the past and this is one of them. Can you imagine working on that trackside. 😂 I think Cecil was an interesting person to come up with some of these ideas like no forward drive while the diffs working !? That cant be right surely !? . You would have to coast every corner .

Love the autopsy series. Could end up with hundreds of videos with all the historic cars and brands out there. Maybe some classes or brands which have "died", like a Corally pancar from the 80's?

Still have the KO Propo FET servo's fitted to my classic RC10 and Schumacher CAT XL. And yes, the original drive system still copes with anything I can throw at it, Even a 11.1 Lipo with a hot motor. Being that the splines are encased in the bearing, the torsion is tempered by the inner bearing wall, clever design. Nice to see Masami's car again.

I worked abroad for a few years, on my return my parents casually told me that they had taken my car's tools spares, basically my entire rc collection to the local tip. Hundreds of tyres four complete cars with spares . Twenty plus motor's, the lot, Tamyia Boomerang, P.B Mini Mustang complete spotless, Yokomo Super Dog Fighter 2 complete and spotless, Schumacher Cat xls complete and spotless.

I would first demand my parents to pay the collectors price of everything and then disown them 🤨

What an iconic car, i was lucky to get the last one from the schumacher factory and it will never leave my collection. It gets raced a lot and is a great car to drive. Did i see an o ring in the shock and not a bladder ?

It’s an early FET servo where the servo motor was boosted to improve speed and torque. The BEC voltage would have come down the servo wires from the speed controller or ESC. For the day the KO Propo speedo would have been quite advanced, but without any reverse at all.

I remember a fellow racer who had the first fet servo I had seen, it blew me away with it's speed and response.

Excellent, but that car would have raced against the new Optima Mid and prototype Yokomo 870c cars not Tamiya Hotshots.

I did have a bit of a cringe watching a multi million pound car being taken apart though. 😬
