In Model AV8R episode 63, we discuss the validity of two very common sayings in RC aviation: "Every RC airplane has an expiration date." and "All foamies will suffer from hangar rash." These are two sayings you hear a lot in model aviation and when you do it's said as if both these claims are inevitable. We don't think so, and we'll tell you why...plus we'll discuss easy ways to avoid them both!

Great video Adam!! And let’s not forget the old adage, “your not crashin of yiur not flyin”…. I have times and days when I fly numerous times and never crash, but hey, we’re all gonna have those days, I’m OCD over my planes, and always take exceptional care of them, and they last for a long time, keep up the great work👊🏼👊🏼

Good tips, I see alot of people bash foamies on social media groups about how there's no skill in the build or how electrics ruin the hobby. That's all I fly because I enjoy the hobby and don't get caught up in what it's made of and I do my best to keep it looking good.

Excellent video, Adam! I also believe that expiration date & hangar rash are choices, not inevitable! I still have my 72" Ace Bingo from back in the early '90s. I can't even count how many flights that plane has seen. Wore-out a Saito .91 in it & then put my supercharged YS .91 AC in it. Tail-feathers need recovering 'cause the Monocote is starting to peel, but that's all she needs. Also have some foamies that are approaching 15 yrs old & have seen a few hundred flights.

Greetings from Germany, and I heard stuff like that from a store clerk some time a go, 'foamies are just for one season' BS is the right word for that in my opinion... my oldest fomies was way past the 11 years mark when I sold it (still in good condition) and it had more than 500 hours of flying time on the clock....and yes, sometimes you have to replace a servo, or a landing gear, even tires at times, but that's normal in my opinion. So it's as you said, with a little bit of care you can have fun with them for way longer than just one season, you just have to handle them right...nice video mate, cherrs

Great video! I'm impressed with 1100 flights on the Avanti. Fantastic example of what can be accomplished with a little care. Reminds me of a banner I saw in a Navy hangar in Pensacola: "If there's doubt, there's no doubt." If there's any doubt about your equipment, you can eliminate that doubt on the ground by checking it, and if necessary, repairing or replacing it. You may not be able to do so once in the air. To continue with the "safety is no accident" theme perhaps you can tackle some superstitious sayings, like "Never say 'last flight.'"

Re: get-there-itis, I usually hear that with fullscale pilots in the context of choosing not to do a go-around when they really should. This also applies to our models. It's ok to go around if a landing gets sketchy (baring any extenuating circumstances like deadstick)

Best over all solution for preventing hanger rash and other bumps n scraps is 2 coats of clear gloss Minwax Polycrylic...makes em twice as strong saves the paint and takes away the foamy plane look. on quart can do as many as 8 to 10 planes also deepens the colors and they look amazing all the time...simple water clean up with your foam brushes to re use for the next plane.

Great advice and so much truth to it all. Been flying since I was in my 20s now 63. Seen a lot of technology come a long way and foam planes are awesome. I miss building stick kits but bind n fly planes can last a very long time if treated right. So glad I found your channel. Big thumbs up.

Today I rewatched this video Adam. It is a very well-produced video with awesome insights about sayings, Over the last 11 months I started viewing others and how the handle there foamies, you are 100% right some of them have no respect for their planes and rough handle them adding to "hanger rash" and some try to fly outside their skill level resulting in "Expiration Date"/ crash beyond repair. I got one fellow I nicked name "Bozo the Clown" that has way more money than brains. He has put to death over 30 planes that I seen. By my calculation around $12kk and that is being modest. The dude would make Bubba look like a pro pilot, In a single day he crashed a Draco, a flightline P-38, and a OV-10 bronco, All beyond repair in fact he spent more time picking up pieces than flying, It was so bad I had tears in my eyes. I wish you and Hedi a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to watching more full length videos.

Great video Adam, even though it is stating the obvious for some of us! Nonetheless you have crystallised some good points there which will hopefully extend the life of many models. * Good tip on LED lighting - I acquired several models from a hanger sale - they all had faded paint or decals - mostly from daylight expose in the well illuminated garage where UV film on the windows would have significantly reduced the fading. * I have a few models that are "beaters" - one being the E-Flite P47 foamie. It already had hangar rash when I had it, but not too obvious. But it had a hidden failure point: the push rods are held in position inside the rear fuselage in shallow slots and a dab of what I suspect is glue. The plane failed to exit a dive. I fixed the primary damage by gluing the fuselage pieces back together, plus secondary items like foam hinge separation. But it took me a while figure out why the was very little up elevator and plenty of down. Yep, the loose pushrod tubes. It took hours to stick them down inside the sealed fuselage tube using glue on the end of a stick and a dentist mirror. Hence the P47 is now a "beater" - but on the plus side I can experiment with it pushing my envelope more. The P47 still flies and lands great!

Great video. I'm sharing with my buddies. I fell victim to "Im here" and damaged a plane that has flown since 1992. I got lucky, minor damage. If I had been disciplined my Ultra Sport would have remained unmolested. Lesson learned.

Adam, I gotta admit. I say the first one about expiration dates.. That said, I have some foamies over 20 years old and they still look pretty good. But, just piled in my beloved Turbo Timber (2yo) yesterday, just simply dumb thumbed it during a low roll.... This is a wonderful video and a great tutorial of how to take care of your planes to extend their looks and function. Great content as always.. - Will

Thanks Will. You know I've said that years ago. Basically repeating what I'd heard. Then got more experience and thought about it. You know some we like may still have an expiration date because of their mission. That 48" Edge in the vid for instance. Its mission is getting new maneuvers down low and getting good at them. Dangerous job, but I'd rather pile it than my 85". I'll only do it with that after I'm sure I have it down. Lol.

Ha ha! I get it man. That's the thing...you can have a hangar that is versatile like ours. We have beaters, and some planes we really don't want to ding, but because of the nature of its mission...it might still buy it...LOL. Then we have the ones we really take care of too.

Great video ! I do consider most foamies beaters but I have alot of very old balsa models. I try to take care of all of them with preflights . I like to take my time do thouch ups ,and repairs before returning them to storage. My saying to live by is nerver work on a plane at the flying field.

Adam, Valid points about old sayings.That being said some planes will have a rougher life from the style of flying and the environments we fly in. It is acceptable to have scrapes on a STOL type fomie in my book. How ever I choose to fly from unimproved surfaces/very short areas, a few scrapes are expected. For the most part I agree with your views on these sayings. Good Job.

Great video Adam, I do try to look after my favourite foamy but sometimes accidents happen, a slight ding here or there but the thing is I repair the damage that day, ok it may not be completely undetectable but it's to my personal standard. As regards flying in conditions that are beyond ones skill level well, as Clint Eastwood said ... 'I like a man who knows his limitations' ... never a truer sentence 🤔👍

I am so glad I found this channel! I agree with everything you said. A thorough preflight could save the day. I show no pity on a person who does not range check or go over the airplane and then crash it because the ailerons were reversed. I still have several airplanes from the early and mid 2000s that could fly today. The majority of the hangar rash on them is from the moving company when the USAF told me it was time to pack up. I treat the little airplanes just like the big ones I strap into. My 30lb BVM F-16 gets the same treatment as my 322,500lb KC-135, and because of that, I still have it, and its safe. Yes, we all crash, but when we do, actually try to find out what happened and mitigate the situation so as to not face the same thing later down the road. Not every crash is a "brown out". Just my .02

I agree with you...anytime full scale care and diligence is applied to model aviation, good things happen. I think the vast majority of rc crashes are operator error of some kind.

I still fly my 35 year old RC Model Magazine Trainer and.... I agree.. upgrade servos, regular tests, check, check, check. Sometimes I think a pilot is looking for an expiration date so that he has a slot available for a new plane. My hanger is full and so I get to mix it up.

Good points about the sayings. For reselling purposes yes I would like to have pristine models but In reality I know how much I learn when I push myself. For instance I have about as many flights on the FMS Kingfisher as with the Night Timber X but the condition of these planes are so very different. Kingfisher pristine even after having an elevator servo giving up mid flight and flipping the plane on its back. Night Timber X with at least six severe crashes and hot glue all over the plane so it's in kinda ugly shape. The difference is I've learned very little from the Kingfisher but tons of things with the Night Timber X as I've pushed beyond my capability and learned to improve my skills. So yes you are right an RC plane doesn't have an expiration date or damage coming either way. It all depends on the pilot and how he treats his planes.

Adam. You said it my friend. I know my limits and tend to push them from time to time. RC is all about having fun. I'm blessed to have the funds to replace a plane if a mishap happens. I still try hard not to crash when I do push the limits, but sometimes "stuff" happens. LOL. I can also tell you that all the crashes I personally experienced which are not many-are the fault of my own. I'm NOT ashamed at all to admit that either. I do find it amusing to those who find excuses of why they crash when it is obvious. Love all the points you made in this video. Take care, Brad.

Thanks Brad! I like a mixed bag. I enjoy the pristine models, but also love the ease and fun of a collection of beaters. Some, like that 48" Edge are tools. That is the 3D plane I risk getting new stuff learned and down low. I'd rather make a mistake learning and pile a $500 plane than my 85" Edge which is triple that. I don't crash often at all, but all of them in the past are on me in some way whether its a maintenance issue I missed or a dumb thumb.

Isn't it funny Adam, I virtually have all my aircraft but it is probably due to me flying them in scale. Oh yes, I have flown some of them in an aerobatic mode, but I love flying them just for the joy of flying. I love take offs & especially landings. I have crashed & repaired but never totally wrecked one. You pack the planes in the car the same way I do....but then my hangar is in the garage. A very enjoyable video mate.🛩🛩👍👍

Dang Mike how do you keep count of so many flights?! I like this topic Adam, a nice reminder to reassure us that our planes can last us a long time and that we have the ability to keep them in one piece. Preventative maintenance can save a lot of headache with any kind of equipment. It's a lot easier and cheaper to fix something before it becomes a problem

@@TheProcustoms In Canada we are legally required to keep a per-flight log. We are considered a legitimate class of GA and we even have registration numbers for each plane. It can be a pain in the ass but it really helps guarantee that a well maintained plane does not reach expiration. Or worse, hurt someone.

Comments on buying quality equipment if you want to increase the chances of the plane surviving are bang on. The servos supplied in BNF and PNP models are usually very cheap, even if they're digital metal gear they are still cheap servos. Most of the time they're good enough but if someone really loves their plane and flies a lot new servos are a worthwhile investment. The sayings that I always feel are BS is the old radio deadspot on the far corner of the field where everyone crashes. That's called tip-stall or accelerated stall which is pilot error not radio loss. Another is that without a gyro that plane is un-flyable. BS, gyros get a lot more credit than they deserve. They're helpful to smooth out the flights but they're not making the plane flyable. Unless you're flying with wing leveling like SAFE but then you're not really flying any more, more like steering it around.

Thanks man! Oh heck yes, and that episode will get done. So much Gyro misinformation. I know what you mean about the stalls. I saw a guy go from Futaba to Spektrum to Jeti, and crash three planes...all stalls he blamed on three perfectly functioning radios.

Adam I've had some foamies much longer then others.. and it's funny about a foamie expiration date....I do like to upgrade power (to most of my warbirds) and now my FMS Pitts, so experimentation in speed and power is something I really enjoy... sometimes things don't work out as expected but to me it's part of the fun of the hobby....which pushes the envelope on a expiration date... I do repaint most of my warbirds, but I can't say i'm big on paint or foam protection, but little things do happen to the foam and ...nothing some touch up paint can't hide.

I have a 1/4 scale J3 Cub. You should see what it takes to get that into a Mitsubishi Lancer! But it's wood and fabric so much harder to damage. That Cub is 20 years old. Gets a through preflight every day, gets anything it needs in terms of maintenance, and does not get flown like an idiot!!! So you are right.

The people who state the expiration date stuff usually do so for a good reason - most of THEIR aircraft have or will be crashed. By stating what they do, they believe they have exonerated themselves as it was all inevitable anyway! Now, I am clumsy af (part way to Bubba but without meaning to!) and my foam planes would be full of hangar rash so I make wing and even fuselage bags for the decent ones. Plus, I have a typical UK sized car, not US sized, so I need the bigger ones disassembled and the bags work great. For part 2: The obvious one is that only a scale, IC, balsa model is worth owning and that everything else is trash (many clubs in the UK are dominated by this mindset - my club isn't) or even just the 'balsa flies better' statement which certainly has a lot of truth to it but, if it's 100% true, why does my Hangar 9 Christen Eagle always want to kill itself yet my foam FMS Pitts is so sweet?

Ahh...yeah man "Balsa flies better" is a good one. True sometimes, not true others. So funny...I love the H9 Christen Eagle. Looks so good! BUT...it's way too heavy, and that is why the FMS Pitts is a pussycat and the CE requires more skill. If I ever get my hands on one I will put it on a diet and power it on an Extreme Flight 6s system. I'd like to see how light I could get one.

@@ModelAV8RChannel Heavy is how it feels. I bought mine used on 8S. It flies massively over scale speed unless I'm very careful and loves to drop a wing at incredibly inconvenient and unexpected times. It once fell into a spin at low level and, by the time I had recovered, it chopped the top off some 18" grass on the climb out!! I think it missed the runway by about 2". I didn't fly it for years after that and it only comes out about once every 3 years. Then it drops a wing at the wrong time and back in the hangar it goes! A lighter power system might just be the ticket - thanks for the tip.

@@Retset Yeah man maybe even look into losing weight other places. Carbon gear, lighter pilot in the hatch (paint a flex one...made of foam super light)...even wood you don't really need aft.

Ah I do that lol 😂,unless it’s a balsa or something show but go and want to keep mint , let it ride. Gives the planes more character and when you have a beat up plane and kill it still people give the dam I’m surprised look.

Wow!!! Now what the heck am I gonna use as an "excuse" for doin what I do? So much Truth (with a capital "T") in what you said. Tryin to wrap my head around where I fit in that continuum.... Oh I know... Tweety Bird's line.... "If I do it I'm gonna get in trouble, I do it" Two things, Always bring more than one plane. Never take off in wind you can't land in.. (the old Take Off's are optional.... sayin) Now I gotta read the rest of the posts and see if you pissed anyone off... Peace Brother..

Well, that was different but good. I totally agree with the every plane has a expiration date, I hear guys say it all the time and i always just look the other way, and think well maybe your planes do but mine don't... Some of the guys I fly with are lucky to take home a plane after a flight or two.. But hey if they still enjoy the hobby good for them... Now the Hanger rash part well, It seems the harder i try to keep my planes looking good the worse they get, My Habu, and my T-28 look horrible. they both have around 300 flights and they show it. not cause i crash or hit the ground with them, but because they were taken to the field a whole lot. They both have dings, and marks in the foam, my T28 has really faded on the paint it no longer looks Yellow, more of a faded Orange. But still fly nice. I don't treat them the way Bubba was his, but they do get knocked into each other in the truck ( i admit my planes get laid on top of each other often, try to use towels and foam pads but sometimes that doesn't work) I drive 45 minutes to the field and normally take no less then 5 planes so truck is packed. I do have some planes I try to take better care of, I have dads old Sig Fazer that thing is like 30 years old, covering needs some help but other then that it still fly nice. Also as dad would say his planes are to fly not win any beauty awards. Keep them flying, see ya next week.

Ha ha ha its nice to see that Bubba takes more care with his foam planes than I do!! People do say some strange things!! I'm like you preflight checks before each trip to the field, and also a range check without fail before I start flying!! I have spotted many a potential expiry date Lol Great video and great advice, although I do need to practice getting my planes to the car a bit better 😉👍

From 6:40 to about 7:14 is saucily like it is . Prefect . Then when they go to sell them at first Swap Meet they think it is in perfect shape . Better shape than new and they ask for twice as much .

Haven't watched yet, BUT YES, the word "tip stall" is so over used the word doesn't even have any meaning any longer. I wish people would educate themselves before saying "tip stall", "tip stall". Uggg...... drives me bananas!!!! Most don't have the slightest clue!! Now I'll watch.

Yea, I tell people to speak for themselves as I have beautiful scale models that are still flying that were built in the 1980's and 1990's. I'm also a full scale pilot, and I fly my models just like they are full scale airplanes, so no, every model doesn't have a expiration date!! That's like saying every full scale airplane has a expiration date. Again, I just say Whatever, speak for yourself.

I have said it before and say it again - I really like your reasoning in just about everything. Not least your wisdom on go or no-go in this film. In 30 years of aviation I, and every human factors buff I know, have always told ourselves and our fellow pilots things like “every landing is an aborted go-around”. So you might say that every RC take-off is an aborted decision to not fly.

@@ModelAV8RChannel We did get out but it was to 2 Christma Parades. She plays Drums so that is what we did. She will be out of school hear in about 9 days so I we will have a ton of time then. I do apologize about not getting the pictures to you before now, October, November and December are absolutely nuts around our house. October being the start of Hunting Season hear in NC, well I say the start, it's when alot of our Gun Seasons start for Small and Big Game. November is preparing for Mirandas Birthday , then Christmas. Oh, I did get out in the shop and start putting some paint on one of those little Rage RC BF-109's it and a little F-4U Coursair stay in my Truck because there cheap, small and don't take up much space. Well the little BF-109 has 103 flight's on it and it was time for a little bit of work on her. So I did get it taken apart as much as I could without cutting anything and sanded. I was able to get some sky blue mixed with a little gray on the belly. Gonna tinker on that some at night, but this upload you put out today made me think about how I treat my Airplanes, even the little $99 400mm ones get treated like our bigger Airplanes, shoot I am OCD over them. 🤣

@@ModelAV8RChannel Yeah it's been nuts hear for real. Usually between Halloween and the 1st of the year it's crazy but this year has been big swings up and down. I lost a close friend then my Daughters Birthday is the end of November and now Christmas is upon us. Everything is going wonderful, we are making sure my friend that passed aways family is going to have as good of Christmas as possible. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful Christmas and safe travels if y'all have to get out and about.

HI Adam - great video good advice and a bit of fun , During your husky demonstration I would have hit it at least 3 times - 😁😁... I am such a Bubba , I can even dent the foam just holding it I press so hard I do pre flights on every flight and it has saved my PA18 , Husky and Super Kinetic (locking servo) - Torn Hinges - a bit of Foamtac and a cup of tea later - good to fly - imagine if I had not done the Pre-flights..., It's the "One last flight Itis" that gets me ... man I can give a Balsa wood aircraft Hanger rash just by looking at it ....
