RC car with chainsaw engine and custom build steering servo

Years earlier I built this homemade rc car. It has a chainsaw engine and the frame is made of steel tube.
The car has spent most of its days sitting in the garage but over the years it has seen many updates. For example the suspension and electrical system have been suspects to major changes.
Most recent update includes a new custom build steering servo which is introduced in this video.
I hope you enjoy it and perhaps it's an inspiration for a project of your own!

Nice work. I built a quarter scale buggy back in the early 80s with a homelite chainsaw engine. Wish I had 3d printers and arduino boards back then. Still have the car on a shelf.

It’s amazing that you created this from nothing yourself. All credit to you. It’s great especially when you open it up! I was just thinking to myself ‘well, it’s slow but it’s still brilliant’ then you turned on the gas and I thought wow that’s so cool!👍

The previous tenant of my house left a chainsaw, no idea if it works. I think it might be time to find out. If it does, I'll have to go over to my dad's and see if I can't dig out the old kid sized ATVs to cannibalize... this is summer is shaping up to be very interesting.

@@outdoorsadventures3722 Eh, figured there was a reason he left it behind. Not that I've been actively looking, but if I came across a used saw at the right time I'd definitely give it another go. Gonna need something soon actually, my brushless ESC caught on fire last week, so no more hucking the DT-02 around the neighbourhood, for a bit.

I don't know when you built it but since probably 2016 there's been mass market electric RCs that would leave this thing in the dust in terms of acceleration and top speed. Maybe not so much in the run-time but batteries are so much cheaper these days that that kinda doesn't matter. On the other hand those electrics don't have that delicious chainsaw sound.

That is SO COOL!!! How long did it take for you to make it? It's definitely the perfect size as if I ever built one from scratch, it'd definitely be 1/5th scale. As I think that's the perfect size before it gets too big. Is there a reason you stuck the steering in front of the axle instead of behind? I'm only thinking that it could be damaged if it got hit or it ran into something, that's all.
@willaa303
@willaa303 2 года назад
Thanks! I would say it took me about six months to design and build the first iteration of the car. Back then the front suspension was different and it had different electric components. Plus there are many other updates made since then so I'm guessing the car will never be "finished". In my opinion this is the reasonable maximum size for an rc car because it becomes difficult to transport with a normal sized car. The only reason the steering is in front of the axle is that there was simply no room behind for the linkage. You are right that it could be easily damaged in an accident. Also the steering geometry would be better if it was behind the axle. I was eager to have a test drive with the new servo setup so this is the configuration I ended up with. At some point in the future I might modify the frame a little.

If you took a shotgun shell that was only loaded with gunpowder, could you fire it into a compressed air tank to create pressure which drives an air motor? So for example, this car would have five shotgun shells which fire into a tank which powers the car. When the pressure in the tank falls below 50 psi, it automatically fire the next shell.

hello , nice project, i would like you to ask few questions: 1) max speed 2) gear ratio 3) rpm/torque of the engine (if you know first hand) thank you so much :)
@willaa303
@willaa303 3 года назад
Hi, and thanks! Here are the answers: 1) I have never measured the actual top speed but it may be calculated as follows: 2) The gear ratio is 9,63:1 3) According to Stihl the maximum power of the engine is 2,6 kW at 9500 rpm. The maximum torque is typically at lower rpm than maximum power, let's say it's at 6000 rpm. Because we don't have the exact power curve of the engine, we assume the power at 6000 rpm to be 2 kW (may be less than that). Now the max torque can be calculated and it is 3,18 Nm. Rear wheels are 11" in diameter and if we assume that the engine is running at 9500 rpm, the top speed of the car would be 52 km/h. In reality the engine should be running at even higher rpm (if it's tuned properly) and the speed should be around 60 km/h.

That engine wants higher RPMs it's not even in the power band. Chain saw engines are high reving little engines and are gutless at low Rpm once the engine is in the rpm range it was designed for it's probably a screaming beast of an rc car
