RC Drift Gearing Test

This is a topic that I have wondered about since I started drifting - how much wheel spin is best?
When I used to drag race my Chevelle (1:1), obviously spinning was bad.
In RC drift, you are ALWAYS spinning. With that in mind - does MORE spinning work better than less spinning? I wanted to test this.
Also - people recommend changing gearing based on the size of the track, and the surface. Could I tell the difference on my small garage test track? Sure can!
I hope this is helpful for you! Let me know in the comments below.

In your instruction manual you will find the recomended pinion/spur combination to get the ideal final drive ratio (FDR) for the perticular surface you will be running your drift chassis. For a fairly slippery surface like you are running your chassis on here a high FDR would be the best option (10 to 13). If the bevel gears in the gearbox is the stock ones they should be 40T/13T wich means you will have to calculate your FDR by your spur tooth count divided by pinion tooth count and then multiplied with the number 3.08. Lets say you are running a 80T spur gear and a 20T pinion, youre FDR will then be close to 12 wich should be decent for good control of the chassis on your surface if you are running a 13.5 or 10.5 turn motor. And there is also other factors that come into play. What kind of tires the chassis is running is one of them. If you check out DS Racing tire selection chart they give some pointers as to what tire might suit your surface of choice. Then there is personal taste/feel, damper settings, acerman and so on to dive deeper into. I am sure you will love getting into rc drifting. You have chosen the right chassis to keep the fustration low and the steep learning curve will bring you much joy! :D

Even in RC drift, less wheel spin = faster acceleration! Because physics doesn’t change on scale. Great video, thanks for the research.

Nice test! I like the little drift course set-up! Great for a cold day! Any heat issues with this pinion options?
@RoadsideRC

No heat issues with these, especially on this surface. Seems like folks normally get in heat trouble when they are running a bunch of boost.

Hi Troy great information man I still have a question I’m planning to swap from 25t pinion, 83 spur gear standard Sakura d5 to 16 pinion and 86 spur gear. My question is what’s the effect with bigger or smaller spur gear? Thanks 🙏
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC Год назад
3 tooth on the spur gear won't make much difference at all. You won't notice it. The 9t jump on the pinion is a HUGE change.

I would think as much wheel speed as possible till it affects low speed. Then it's just throttle control. But I've never had a drift car
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 4 года назад
That was kind of my mindset going in. I was surprised to see the results. Less wheelspin is still faster!

bro what is the timing on motor ?

I run 40* on the motor, 10* turbo, 10* boost
