It was a steep learning curve trying to get this paramotor to work. From the variation in line length, to motor and CG placement, as well as the torque compensation blades!
I already had all of the parts laying around, so this only cost me the price of the wing. However, if you wish to build your own, it'll cost about £130 (if you already own the remote control equipment).
3D Printer stl files can be purchased from: gum.co/TOzzy
Here are the parts used
Parafoil Wing: goo.gl/8DvNYC
Motor: goo.gl/uDPg6n (affiliate link)
Electronic Speed Controller: goo.gl/B1qNeF
Servos (x2): goo.gl/JxozCL
Propeller: goo.gl/ZgQmYA
Battery: goo.gl/2JHbMz
Also requires a transmitter and receiver for control. I use the following: goo.gl/keLdb2 (affiliate link)
3D printer stl files are available to my Patrons.

I'm still in awe at your tenacity. All those lines would be a nightmare. I can't untie my shoes without making a knot. Perhaps a prop cage would help. So I gotta make one suggestion. 3D print a rider and make his arms be the steering arms. Hope to see a follow up on this.

Good work Tom, It takes a while to tune a bridle for a kite and the torque compensation blade worked first time and the foil is maintaining it's shape really well so it's flying quick enough. You can steer with the left or right side bridle and not use the break lines.

Hey so I had one of those. Mine was doing the same stall. It needed way more weight than I thought . I had about 1.5-2 lbs to get it to fly. It needs more weight to keep the huge wing tracking above it. Great model thanks for uploading
@AndreBandarra1
@AndreBandarra1 6 лет назад
Hey dude really cool video. I've been watching your videos for quite a while but never commented for some reason :) Been flying RC for about 15 years and paragliders for 4 years or so. Line lengths are critical to how a paraglider flies. I can see from your successful flight that even though it flies you need to lengthen your mid As as there is a big kink in the Bs. I know you said at the end that this is critical for the wing to fly so maybe the canopy isn't very well designed by hobbyking? I have a lot of paragliding videos on my channel but the "Servicing a paraglider" series might be useful to you on this. Also btw, I'm UK based so if you want to try groundhandling on a fullsized paraglider or even fly let me know, would be a good spring project colab :D yeah, the canopy pitching back when you put power on is normal.
@sabership
@sabership 6 лет назад
Sorry for the random question but could a paraglider descend in a stable manner from a relatively high altitude if uncontrolled? Sort of like using the parasail as a parachute until the RC Craft falls below the legal altitude limit for RC Craft. I ask because i'm curious about if a paraglider setup could be used as a recovery method for a Weather Balloon Payload. Thanks!
@AndreBandarra1
@AndreBandarra1 6 лет назад
yes would work as paragliders inflate and recover from collapses automatically if untouched. it would be potentially better for an application in which you want to control it to glide the payload to a specific place or direction. If you just want it to descend in a stable manner a round/square parachute would probably be better. Modern full-size paragliders get something around 10:1 glider ratio in still air so if uncontrolled it could end up very far away :)
@TomStantonEngineering
@TomStantonEngineering 6 лет назад
Hey Andre! Thanks for the advice! I think the hobbyking wing has some flaws when in comes to the length of the lines, which is why so many people have had trouble with it. Just subscribed to you and will have a watch of your servicing videos. Whereabouts are you based in the UK? I've wanted to try a full size wing for a while, just haven't gotten round to it!

I used to fly a two man powered parachute with a 65HP rotax engine and a 65" tri-blade prop. The web straps are much longer so the chute cords are farther from the prop. Never had to lean. Could be the chute steering lines were tuned to compensate. Also had a gearbox between the prop and engine so they might have been cancelling. Not sure. The full size ones only go 30 mph and can't be flown in a wind much over 10 mph. Makes for a very fun ride. Nice job.

Good, you found about torque compensation. Very important :D So if you are a poor pilot like me, you can't afford the blades so... How it works for the most paramotors is that there is a cross buckle that you can adjust. When you tighten it kind of lifts one side of your seat so you put more weight there. Therefore you don't need to think about it in level flight. But you need to think about it when you accelerate, you need to compensate by turning a bit opposite way and as well on the other side when you want to do a sharp turn against the torque you need to throttle down or throttle up if you go with the torque.

Use counter-rotating propellers. It cancels out the torque, increases thrust, and you can steer by changing the motor balance. The weight reduction from the servos offsets the heavier motor

Very tempted to make one! I tried making one with a cheap power kite I got on ebay back in the day. The lines on that were crap too and it never flew as either a kite or paramotor. I may well dig it back out, last time I tried using an EDF but I think the more conventional approach this time with a big brick of LiOn 18650's I have. Also I might try and make some landing skids.

Go to the Aviator PPG channel and watch their kiting video. It shows the riser system in great detail. Four separate risers rather than four fixed rings on a single riser. I'm just starting to learn but I think you don't want to adjust your A lines but adjust your D lines. The Trim system on most risers adjusts the D lines to increase or decrease your angle of attack. Shorten them and you get a lot of lift but not a lot of speed. Lengthen them and you get more speed, but you have to increase the RPM to maintain level flight. Then they add the "Speed Bar" which is an adjustment you do with your legs to increase speed. It's a great sport that is becoming super popular right now. And yes...you nailed it on the torque compensation. Good Eye.
