Niiiiiice ! As a paramotor pilot I like this project a lot :) A couple of remarks though: you should maybe redesign slightly the way the wing is attached to the body to allow a modification of the position of center of gravity versus attaching points for the wing. This will also allow to fly with one battery only when there is no wind. In this case, wing attachment shall be moved to the back a little. Putting more weight increase your speed but also increase a lot the stall speed. When too much weight is hanging, your stall speeds equals your max speed (or is very close) and it becomes difficult to fly. One test to do to confirm position of CG, is to attach the body as it would be under the wing, but attached to a fixed bar. Put the same amount of throttle as you would need to fly on level and confirm that the propeller axes are pointing slightly up (in the direction of flight). This is the optimal setup where your motor decreases your load factor on a leveled flight. It decreases also the risk of stalling when you fly at low speed and go back on throttle.

I was wondering if you could create a dumb AI to help with thermalling. Detect a consistent tug on the right wing-tip? Turn right etc... Would need drone style collision detection to avoid turning into terrain beside you..

You'd need a far more rigid container. Something like aluminium. It adds to the weight, but that doesn't really matter I think, since he stated that he needed more.

Also, the geometry doesn't have to be a cylinder. It just needs to hold a lot of pressure. The dry ice would't be able to supply a large enough constant pressure I think.

Great video. I have actually had one of these wings for several years and recently purchased a wheeled unit with a large single prop but have not been able to get it to fly by taking off from the ground. Your method of launch seems to work quite well. I haven't seen anything close to what you printed anywhere. A really good solution. Thanks again for the video.

I bought a paramotor kit a couple of decades ago. As I recall, it flew surprisingly well, if - and that was a big if - you could get it airborne. It could take a fair bit of running up and down the local airfield to get the wing to catch just the right amount of wind to generate enough lift. By which time half of the battery had been used trying to get into the air, so flighttime was pretty short. But even so, I got fond memories of calm summer evenings, seeing the paramotor fly slowly around the airfield as the sun was setting. Would love to see you return to this one.

Hi Tom, I think building a small scale prototype of some sort of AWES (Airborne Wind Energy System) device would be right up your alley, and a really interesting project. There are a bunch of different technologies competing in the field, and a lot of early ideas from the 70s having recently seen new light because of advances in autonomous systems. And with google backed Makani having just finished testing of their 600 kW flying wing, things are definateley happening. Also think inspiring people to se mechanical engineering beeing put to use to help the climate is a good thing. Just an idea. Like your stuff on yt. Best /Gunnar

You could make it wider by making it in three parts the prop structures could be dovetail jointed and screwed to the central battery compartment in two positions each.

Fantastic ! Why not setting the controls to make a difference in throttle between motors ? It could use a mix between difference of torque (of propeller) and a difference of thrust. By this mean you could turn without adding trail to the wing. Could be helpful to fight against wind.

Cool, you went to Madeira, I live in portugal, actually lived most of my life on the island group more north called azores, but I went to madeira as part of a school expedition. Beautiful island. if you havent yet, and plan to go back, you gotta try the wooden sleigh rides down the tarmac road, I believe they are built on top of some sort of metal sheet. but anyway, that ride is so fast for haven virtually no controll over it. xD

Have you thought about putting the A and B ring at the front of your battery tray and the C and D ring in the back? Maybe it will stabilize the flight and it could gain more speed. Would be interesting to see the result. By the way,- nice and interesting videos! Greetings from Germany
