Just in time as the outdoor 2021 RC race season is about to begin. Join me as we go over the RC tire truing process. Everything from cutting the tire to diameter, grooving the tires to cross cutting the rear tires for that extra bit of traction.
Though this video specifically goes over the dirt oval foam tires, the process of cutting to diameter will also help the carpet pan car oval racers as well.
The process you see in this video is my process. There are other ways of getting the same job done but hoping this visual process will help some that are just starting.

Well thank you. I hope you do as well. Yeah alot of people run hole shots for loose amd as the sun goes down and the track grooves up we switch to bar tires like positrons. That's on our outdoor tracks. The indoor it's bar tires some Hoosier proline and de racing tires. De for all the tire speced classes

This is super interesting as I am a 1/7 scale speed runner. Wondering if radial grooving would hold up at 130+ mph. Would sure be nice to add traction to keep the car straight.

Todd that's awesome. I'm not sure I haven't done much with doped runs. But much like racing every bit counts.

Could this machine (with some modification) be used to regroove rollerskate wheels?
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc Год назад
Hmmm... That's a great question. I'm not sure. It would depend on diameter and likely need a custom mount/arbor.
@JoshAintLoud

@JBTrickleRC could you tell me what the maximum clearance would be. From center of spindle to bottom plate x 2. I'm sure you know that. Lmao.
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc Год назад
@@JoshAintLoud honesty, I no longer have the foam tire truer. But I I know I cut my tires to 2.70 inches in diameter and some tires were close to 2.80 in in diameter. So I'd say there's at least that. Maybe 3". If you sent CRC an email or called them, I'm sure they would reply. They had great customer service as I spoke to them before.

Where can I get the groove cutting bit tool from
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc 9 месяцев назад
rbrown, there are various places and brands but I personally used the Assault RC Groover. I got mine through BeachRC.com. Brent, the owner is a cool guy and I got to know him a bit running the SCOR series a couple years ago.

Can you please tell me more about the foam itself, what is it made from what is the shore hardness, what is the foam known as in the retail world I am over in Australia and new to the hobby
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc Год назад
Eugene, those are great questions but I'm afraid I won't be much help. These tires are made by BSR tires. They do sell them in different hardness levels though which will also vary the amount of foam/rubber content. More information can be found on their website. As far as shore hardness goes that's something that can differ from racer to raver due to tire prep and softeners etc. The science there is within your own racing program. If you are looking for shore numbers based on the tires right out of the package. I don't have any notes on that because I didn't record anything until after I had them "broken in".

Foam tired for dirt? In my state no one runs foam tires on dirt. We run pin rubber tires for loose dirt. Bar rubber tires for high bite amd factory stock is de racing grooved/ non grooved only. 13.5 is the slowest oval class we have though so we'd probably blow the foam right of the rim lol. Our sprint mwm sc mod and late model are all open motor/ tires classes.

Jeff thank you sharing. I always enjoy hearing how different parts of the country, even world I should say, run their races. It very cool to see the similarities and differences. We have a good mix of rubber and foam tire racing around me though we are pretty much high bite only in my area. I've never ran pin tires for dirt oval. Plenty of rubber tire racing and foams though. Foams are a different world but I've grown to absolutely love it. Thank you for checking out and supporting the channel. Wishing you well in all your RC racing adventures.

Is truing and grooving the foams for 1/8 dirt oval totally necessary or can you just run them like they come?
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc 2 года назад
Sandman RC great question. In dirt oval racing the only slick tires I see is generally rubber tires and that's usually only on high bite dirt oval track. Loose dirt usually treaded or pin tires. Any and all foam tire dirt oval cars ive seen run grooved tires. Could it be done smooth? Maybe, but it would hurt more than help. It's all about grip and that's why we cut them the way we do generally.

Here in mobile Alabama we only run Hoosier type tires on our dirt track we only have one behind the hobby town they just wet and pack it and go racing so y'alls type cars won't work I dotn think they only run short course based classes buggy 2wd street stock class and 1/5 scale latemodels. We also have the carpet track only place here in mobile Alabama we run foams on we dont groove we just cut different sizes and camber into tires for our pan cars. Would your dirt latemodel work on a rough as in rough for a rc dirt oval track and wet type track with the same tires you cut and chassis it looks like the 17.5 cars look like a pan car but has shocks on all 4 corners and independent suspension would those work like the 17.5 class on a track like that or is y'alls track packed really tight and coated to keep it from getting rough and dirty on the cars
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc 3 года назад
RC Carpet Racers the 21.5 and 17.5 cars can run the Custom Works rubber tires and we have run some "loose dirt" special event races but around here everyone pretty much prefers high bite foam tire racing for the purpose built cars. We do run a lot of rubber tire buggy and slash based classes too. But generally it's always high bit smooth surface.

Roderick I know some people and some race groups race foam tires in drag racing but I'm honestly not sure since I don't have any experience in foam drag racing. Our local drag group is rubber tire only and they are generally slicks. Good question but afraid Im not sure.

I'm gonna assume yall are racing on some really well prepped smooth dirt tracks only dirt track we got its rough and has divots and ruts not to bad but only runs short course based truck classes street stock and 1/5 scale late models. Cars with those foams won't ever work here I dont think the dirt modified I run comes off the track covered in dirt and mud sometimes
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc 3 года назад
RC Carpet Racers you are correct. Around here we run high bit dirt oval. Very smooth, very grippy and very fast. It's a blast! Tracks can get a bit touch occasionally but our race directors do a great job with track prep. The Red Clay around here makes it easier with that.
@youknoweverything7643
@youknoweverything7643 3 года назад
@@jbtricklerc yes that must be nice we have bright red clay down here as well but the only dirt clay oval rc track we have they suck at track prep I wish we had high bite tight packed track with lots of grip to run foam tires and be able to use the chassis other then the short course truck chassis or a buggy chassis and be able to run foam for high bite. But will never happen that's why I'm sticking with my indoor carpet racing

They offer a few variations. As long as its for a 1/10 dirt oval foam tire it should work. I cannot remember the exact version I was using. But the link here shows one that would work. Currently out of stock, but I'm sure it can be found elswhere. www.lefthander-rc.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=4168

Great info ty!!! Just out of curiosity, do you know what type of foam is used in foam tires? Is it something that can be purchased and hand turned on a lathe to get new and interesting ideas to use on custom level?
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc 3 года назад
Alan that's a great question. I'm not sure what type of foam is used to be honest. I do know that they use various types as there are different compounds which means different hardness/stiffness levels and some have more rubber content than others. All these custom works and BSR tires come smooth so you can cut them however you choose but at that point you are limited to the diameter (which is usually around 2.74 inches give or take a bit). I believe at one point you could get just the wheels and foam to glue them yourself but not sure if that's an option anymore or what manufacturer offered that and I may be mistaken on that as well. I've always just purchased these specific tire types personally for the dirt oval side. Everything else I run are generally rubber tires.

Will this work for drag racing
@jbtricklerc
@jbtricklerc 3 года назад
Roderick it would depend on the size of the mounted wheel and tire. This cutter is for 1/10 use. I did look to see if a slash oval racing tire would fit and it did not. Would need a 1/8 scale cutter for that. I know drag tires vary in size as well.
