As mentioned in my E-flite P-39 (bit.ly/EflP39) Back from the Ashses video ( • From the Field -- Cras... ), here's my tutorial on the weathering that I did on the airframe. In the video I discuss the refinish process, how to apply surface fading, oil stains, exhaust stains, and paint chipping. I absolutely love the result of the refinish on this airplane. It's quickly become one of my favorites to bring to the field. I'll have my full flight review posting in a few weeks hopefully. In addition, I have a full article on this and other weathering and refinish videos/articles like it at thercgeek.com/weathering

We should just mail our planes to Chris before unboxing. I added a servo to the vertical stab to have a workable rudder on the new 50mm Viper. It’s in, it works, but it looks like a serial killer with dull knife cut out the pocket. (Dremel, new blade in the Exacto. Still looks horrible)

Chris, just an FYI. The grey in the exhaust stains are lead deposits from the combustion process. Real fun to get off the airplane when you are trying to remove prior to an inspection! Thanks for the tips on refinishing foam aircraft. You inspired me to improve the finish (or lack, thereof) on my E-flite Turbo Timber, before its maiden flight. In this video, you mention using a light-weight spackle from Sherwin Williams. I am not able to get Hobbylite foam finish from my usual sources. Would the spackle from Sherwin Williams work OK for filling in small dents in the foam? Thanks.

Great techniques and similar to what I have used with scale modeling. Where is a good place to find drawings, images or diagrams with panel line and rivot details? I am planning a Top Flite P-39 Gold Ed. build with weathering as well.
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 3 года назад
Thanks! I usually start with an internet search for drawings and then turn to books when I need to. I spend a lot of time researching projects usually. On the p39, I found a pretty good ebook on the books app on my iPhone called ‘Bell P-39 Airacobra’ that’s pretty good and has some decent drawings. I referenced it quite a bit for this model.
@skeeterhoney
@skeeterhoney 4 года назад
You ought to dip the tip of the spinner in black paint down to the base of the tube to make the cannon in the centerline look more scale.
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 4 года назад
True, I did forget about that, haha! Instead of black, I’d use a metallic gunmetal color. Probably airbrush it using some Alclad II ‘steel’. That’s a nice looking dark metallic color.
@skeeterhoney
@skeeterhoney 4 года назад
@@Thercgeek Well, dipping is what I'd do because I don't have RCGeek-level patience! Love the channel--you've really given me hope that I can make my planes look better. Now if I could only get the flying part down...

@sheanathan3566 4 года назад
Wonderful. Thank you for doing this. I would like to weather my E-flite Spitfire MKXIV 1.2m. Since it is made from Z-foam and not durable EPO like the P-39, would you change any of your techniques? Also, I’ve been dying to ask you if you keep all of the beautiful planes you feature in your past videos or sell them off. If you keep the, are there any favorites you have? I’m into prop warbirds. Cheers Nathan
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 4 года назад
Thank you! Z-foam is epo foam, so no issues at all. And truthfully, I’d use the same techniques even if it wasn’t. The key is to always test whatever paint medium you’re using first just to ensure no reaction. On the airplane I refinish, I keep them. Some of the review models I keep, some of them I give away. It Really depends, but I just can’t keep them all, haha!
@bgorbeene58
@bgorbeene58 4 года назад
It looks so realistic....very very nice work. Say does all the paint, sealer and putty add much weight to the overall aircraft ?
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 4 года назад
It depends, on the airplane and how many layers you apply on it, but not a ton of weight generally. I tend to forget to weigh them before, but at the same time I find that the airplanes tend to fly better after the refinish. The smoother airframe in combination with that little more weight makes them penetrate atmospherics better.
@bgorbeene58
@bgorbeene58 4 года назад
@@Thercgeek thanks
@mflacke
@mflacke 4 года назад
Wow! That looks amazing! I'm curious if you weighed the plane before and after the process? I noticed you run a 4S 3600 all the way up front which is very different from my CG on my stock one. It seems like the refinish adds a bit of weight. Especially to the tail. Nice work and thanks for sharing your skills.
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 4 года назад
Thank you! I didn’t weigh the airplane before the refinish, but I’ve found that generally these airplanes fly better following a full refinish in spite of the weight gain. Part of it is the smooth finish, but the other part is the slightly higher wing loading as I’ve found that generally these foamies fly better with a little higher wing loading as they handle atmospherics better.
@mflacke
@mflacke 4 года назад
@@Thercgeek I was thinking about spraying minwax on my P-39 to make it a little more rigid. I want to remove the nose art stickers and just paint the nose. With minwax, would you recommend spray or brush, how many coats and sanding in between when keeping most of the paint?
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 4 года назад
I find that the brush on poly dries more rigidly than the spray stuff. Multiple coats brushed on with a foam brush will give a nice surface. If you plan to paint over it, then you really only need to lightly sand the final coat before painting.

Hey bud. I purchased the eflite Beechcraft d18. I’m looking to weather said aircraft. Since the plane is silver what color would the chipping be painted. Thanks.
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek Год назад
I believe that the full scale d18 the eflite is modeled after is polished aluminum. So, paint chipping would make the most sense on the red painted areas. Not on any of the silver areas.
@boss2234

Is it the clear coat keeping the spray paint from eating the foam ?.
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 3 года назад
Most foam models these days are made from EPO foam (just like this one) which is extremely resilient to solvents. That means that you can use most any type of paint mediums and it won’t melt the foam. I haven’t found a paint that won’t work on it to date. What you’re thinking of is EPS foam which is the same type they use for foam coolers and it does have issues with reacting to solvents. In those cases, you have to be more careful on the types of paints you use and how you prep the foam.
@garrygilbert4635
@garrygilbert4635 3 года назад
I usaly repaint mt EPO foam planes as well. I like thinned latex 8oz samples from the "big box" stores. I thin them down with windex 50% and over coat with 2X matte rustoleum. Anyway have you ever done a weight comparison before and after? I always say I will but vever do. I would think that a 1200mm plane would only gain an oz or 2. What have been your experiences?
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 3 года назад
I always forget to get a before weight, but weight difference depends on how much prep is applied. That being said I’ve found the airplanes fly and track better following a full refinish like this.

Look at painting and weathering of plastic models on you tube A good ides is to paint panel Lines before painting. Bit very Nice work
@Thercgeek
@Thercgeek 3 года назад
Yup, I’m quite familiar with the pre-shading technique and have used it on my own plastic models. It works best if you’re airbrushing the surface. If using spray cans to paint, the underlying shading doesn’t always come through because of the amount of paint that gets laid down from the spray cans. You can get much the same results with post-shading too. Ultimately it’s a personal preference of the modeler whether to pre-shade or post-shade.
