Buzz from RU-vid Channel Buzz1151 sent me a radio to restore. That was nice of him I thought... until I opened the box!
I have the radio working but the speaker is toast. Also the rust, so much rust. Can I fix both to get the radio looking and working as it should? RCA Victor 26BP

I love how you guys can salvage speakers! I worked in a radio/tv shop in the 70's and we would send speakers out to a local shop to be reconed for a couple of dollars. Cones are available from China but they typically don't include the speaker coils. I haven't tried to recone a speaker but I have a huge box with 4 inch speakers that need to be repaired. I'm 78 and still involved in electronics. I worked in IT for 32 years and ended up teaching IT for another 12 years after I retired.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Месяц назад
The day of getting a recone for a few dollars have passed. The voice coil and cone are sold separately bus it's very hard to get a cone with a small enough voice coil hole, they more suit the bigger magnets used today. It's good to be busy in retirement. Thanks George👍🙂

geee David, regarding the battery case - "an amature effort" ? From it's terrible condition to the final item and it's appearance after your "armature effort", well, I'd bet money that it looks better now than the day it was manufactured, bravo! And - the speaker being one lucky lump of steel, paper and copper wire was very lucky to receive your attention - easy to guess that the majority of tinkerers out there would have tossed it and then cobbled something else together - I was thinking as you finished it, with your "3D tool", and care with the coil's core and such - "gawd, that man is one clever son-of-a gun!" Thanks for another great vid.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Месяц назад
Thanks Skip. The battery frame came out OK but I should have spent more time on it, it could have looked like new if I did. I was a little disappointed in myself I guess. The speaker had an unusual mounting method so I made the effort to recover the original speaker, well worth it in the end. The 3D printer is so handy, I try and think of things to make 😄

I had a similar speaker issue recently, and was able to just remove the central dust cap, and unscrew the magnet retaining bolt, then shim around the magnet with slivers of old credit card, and retighten the magnet down. Hi David, once again a great video. Loved the speaker repair & especially the re-centering, I,m still trying to work out why the tone input? I have never seen a speaker like that, very unique design indeed, we certainly learn't a bit from this video ! Cheers

Hello Baz, thank you. The tone keeps the voice coil centred in the magnet core, the tolerance was so tight I thought it needed a little help. It seemed to work pretty well and I might use it on other speakers to see if it really effective. I saw someone else do it many years ago and though it would be worth a try here 🙂

I wll try this technique on the Breville speaker I'm doing this week, mind you the cone is going to be a real challenge !

You do some through work. I just replaced the speakers in my truck a few months ago. I wonder if they could have been fixed.

Thanks clasicradiolover. You can buy replacement speakers for your truck, a better option I think 🙂

A 'speaker factory would have left a shim in while the adhesive cured, but I guess you got away with it!

Hi David, Gee that's an unusual speaker. I've never seen one constructed like that. Anyway, nice job on it! I'm wondering why you decided to apply a signal to it while fitting the cone? If it moves freely and doesn't scrape it will work, won't it? I feel like I'm missing something. Cheers

Hi Don, me neither, I was in awe as it came apart, I don't know why they did it that way. The low frequency sinewave centres the voice coil, the gap was so small I wasn't confident I could get a shim in there to centre it. I did manage to get a thin piece of paper in there but was curious as to how accurate applying a tone would be. It seemed to work very well. Thanks Don 🙂

Hello Dave ,Tony from the Uk . What is press board ? Great video as always .
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Месяц назад
Hi Tony. Pressboard insulation material is used under switchboards or anywhere mains voltage needs to be isolated from another material. It's rated at 150C and a dielectric strength of 12kV/mm. Our local electronics shop sells it. It's much the same as Presspahn Paper. Thanks Tony 🙂

Has a lathe, media blaster, and 3D printer to bring to bear on a radio (and make custom tools for it), and still calls the effort "amateurish". Well, there's no hope for me then!

🤨 - as another RU-vid’er that wears a respirator when using a “supposedly” sealed sand-blasting cabinet, the connected dust extractor has poor filtration and blowing some of the finer dust back out 🫢⚠️, the room it is in, is poorly ventilated?
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Месяц назад
Hello Samuel, The cabinet is connected to a vacuum source via a coarse and two fine filters. The the outlet from the extractor is vented outside. I wear a respirator as well 🙂
