Another week, another reloading product review? In this week's long term review, the Redneck Preppy looks at the RCBS Ultrasonic Case Cleaner which he's used for years to clean both cases and gun parts. Is ultrasonic cleaning really a viable way to clean brass? After several years of heavy use the Preppy will finally pass judgment over this unit.

I have used the same RCBS ultra-Sonic cleaner for many years. I also use Dillon vibratory cleaner. I have a pretty extensive cleaning regiment for cleaning rifle and pistol brass. Since I usually use range brass for reloading. The brass first goes into the vibratory cleaner for an initial cleaning. This is done to try and keep dirt and carbon out of my roll sizer and progressive reloading machine. Next, the brass makes a trip into a roll sizer. The roll sizer will remove the Glock bulge. The next step for me is universal decapping. Then into the ultrasonic cleaner to clean the primer pockets. To me, the ultrasonic cleaner does a good job of cleaning however it leaves the cases s a little bit dull so after loading the cartridge I will put the loaded cartridge back into the vibratory cleaner to get a Polish on the brass. This leaves the loaded cartridge looking brand new and factory fresh.

If it isn't clean and shiny after all of that, it will never be, ha ha.

Great video again sir. I personally use two different methods, the first one for large amounts of brass I use a Frankforf Arsenal vibratory tumbler with either corn cob or if the brass is really dirty I use crushed Walnut halls. Secondly for smaller amounts of brass I use a Harbor Freight, the American version of Princess Auto LOL, and it does very well provided you decaf and make sure the pockets are clear. I have tried the rotary tumbler with steel pins and found it very messy, very difficult to get all of the steel pins out, and occasionally would have a steel pin stuck in a flash hole. Now having said that yes rotary tumblers with steel media is absolutely probably the best way to get your brass like out of the store brand new. I find myself frequently using my Sonic cleaner as I said, on small amounts of brass, after a rain session of one of my larger caliber rifle cartridges ie 300 PRC 300 WSM 7 RemMad etc, or something from one of my Precision rifles or one of my Precision pistols where I'm only doing 20 to 30 cartridges. The drawing aspect yes I agree can be a pain in the butt sometimes lol, however I used to use a small oven to dry my rounds or if it was summer time just lay them out in the sun. Recently however I purchased an inexpensive Frankford arsenal parts dryer and it works very well. I'm not trying to sell anything if anyone LOL, I'm just agreeing with what you're saying. As an afterthought, and being a Staff NCO (E6) You're correct We were very anal about how clean the weapons were lol. Anyway great video as always sir God Bless Stay Well Reload Often and Shoot Straight.

You don't need to tell me how anal NCOs are about rifle cleaning, believe me :-)

I like the idea of cleaning gun parts but I always dry tumbler in walnut/ corn cob media with some Lucas brass shine mix. It does get the brass too look band new. Most of all the carbon from inside the case is removed and the primer pockets do get media stuck in them but not too bad to clean out. I have two dry tumblers one from harbor frieght and one large tumbler from Hornady. They are load as hell but the HF one is a little more quiet

I'm almost tempted to try the really fine walnut shell just to see if I can avoid it getting stuck in the primer pocket.

Long term you may find the plastic elbows on the internal valve (that drains the liquid contents) will fail. You’ll have liquid all over the place. A poor design and parts are unavailable.

I am always disappointed by some of the choices made by companies when designing products, Not surprised, only slightly disappointed.

What solutions were you testing with the brass and the parts ?

I tended to use the Lyman Turbo Sonic solution but I think I had the best results with the RCBS Ultra Sonic solution.
